` H. L. FISHER.
PLATFORM SCALE.
No. 360,287. Patented Mar. 29, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY L. FISHER, OF TOLEDO, IOVA.
PLATFORM-SCALE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,287, dated March 29, 1887.
Application filed July 19, 1886. Serial No. 208,460.
To all whom. it mayjconcern:
Beit known that I, HARVEY L. FIsIIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Platform-Scales; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view partlyin section. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on line x x, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a similar section on the line g/ y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail of a portion of a plan view.
lMy invention relates to weighing-scales; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A. and A are the ground-sills, which are laid upon the ground and support the scale mechanism above the ground, thereby avoiding the necessity of digging a pit for the Inain levers, Snc.
B is the platform, and C C the inclined appreaches, which are rendered necessary in this instance, because the platform B is elevated above the surface of the ground.
E is the incasernent at one side of the platform, in which incasement the scale-beam F is located, and into which the main levers G and H extend. The main levers Gand H are fulcrumed on supports I, resting upon the ground-sills near the ends of the latter, as shown in Fig. l, and the short levers J Kare fulcrumed 4on supports I', secured to the ground-sill opposite the large ends of the main .levers G H. The larger or fulcrum ends of the main levers G H and the short levers J K are connected through approaches by transverse rods L L', which are secured in place by halfclamps M M', integral with said larger ends, and by half-clamps N N', secured to the half- (No model.)
clamps M M by nut-bolts O O. In front of the fulcrum-supports I the main levers and shortlevcrs are each provided with a depending link, Rand these links Pare each engaged by alaterally-projecting hook, Q, on the outer faces of the platform-sills B. By this construction .it will be seen that when weight has been brought upon the platform and the same depressed the hooks Q will engage the links l?, which will cause the adjacent ends of the short levers J K and the knife-edges of the longer levers, G H, to be depressed, thereby bringing down the link in which the lever S ispivoted and acting upon the scale-beam, so as to indicate the amount of pressure upon the platform.
The main levers G and H are provided quite near their inner or adjacent ends on their under faces with downwardlyprojecting knifeedge points R, which engage the lower end of the rectangular link S, which latter is fulcrumed in the scale-box, and is connected by a rod, S, with the scale-beam S2. By this construction it is only necessary to have two main or long levers, as the short levers assist in supporting the platform as effectively as two other long levers would. This renders a large saving in the construction of the scales, and produces scales that are accurate and amply protected from the weather, especially from water, as there is no pit to be filled by water that would interfere with the action of the scales.
Having described this invention, v what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination; with the ground-sills provided with the fulcrum-supports near their ends and the platform provided with laterally-projecting hooks ,near the ends of its sills, of the half-clamps, the main levers, and the short levers connected by the transverse rods at their larger ends, and all said levers being provided with links for engaging the laterally-projecting hooks on the platformsills, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the ground-sills, the platform-sills provided with laterally-projecting hooks, and the scale-box provided with small levers connected with the scale-beam, In testimony whereof I afiix m of the half-clamps, lche main levers connected presence of two witnesses.
at their inner ends to the small lever by a link, and the transverse connecting-rods eon- HARVEY L. FISHER. neeting,` the main levers and short; levers in pairs, all said levers being provided withl Vitnesses:
links engaging said hooks, substantially as l HORATIO H. KENNEDY,
specified. NVYATT E. HOCKETT.
