COFFlN-LOWERING ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,239, dated March 29, 1887.

Application filed July 21, 1886. Serial No. 203,598. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN \V. NEW LOVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Charleston, in the county of Clark, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coffin-Lowering Attachments, of which the'following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac companying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in devices or attachments to coffins or caskets by which they are lowered into the grave.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient device by which the lowering-straps are readily attached to and detached from the coffin or casket.

Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a coffin or casket with the lowering-straps secured to each corner. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the strap attachment and eyein a detached position. Fig. 3 is a side view of the strap attachment and sectional view of the eye detached. Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the strap attachment and eye joined together as in use. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the pendant and strap with the devices for attaching the strap to the pendant.

A indicates the coffin or casket, to the four corners of which are secured the eyes B. The eyes or staples B are provided at their rear ends with a screw-threaded shank, O, or other suitable fastening device, by which they are secured to the side of the coffin or casket, the front ends of said eyes being provided with an open-ended recess, D, which is contracted at its front end, for a purpose to be described hereinafter.

The upper side of the eye B is provided with an inclined or convex surface, E, which permits the strap attachment to slide off when the straps are turned around and loosened, and thus become detached from the eye.

The under side of the eye 13 is provided with a concave recess, F, adapted to receive the ball on the lowerend of the pendant or strap attachment, and by which means the ball attached thereto is prevented from slipping out of the eye, as shown in Fig. 4.

G is the pendant or device which is attach ed to the end of the lowering-straps H, the shank I of said pendant being provided with suitable apertures to receive the rivets by which the pendant is secured to the strap, said rivets being passed through the sleeve H.

The pendant Gr is provided with an inclined flanged portion, K, below which is formed the flat portion L, adapted to enter the contracted or narrow portion D of the eye B.

M is a round portion of the pendant, located below the flat portion L, on the lower end of which is formed the ball N adapted to enter the concaved recess F of the eye.

In placing the pendant of the lifting-strap in the eye the thin or narrow portion L is in serted into the contracted portion D of the eye. The pendant is then raised and turned to the position shown in Fig. 2 until the ball N enters the concave recess F, when the pendant will be securely attached to the eye, so that it will not become detached until the pendant is turned again into the position in which it was inserted.

\Vhen it is desired to release the pendant from the eye after the casket has been lowered into position, straps and pendants are turned and the straps are slackened, when the pendant will drop until the inclined portion K strikes the inclined face E of the eye, which allows the pendant to slide out of the eye, and thus disengage itself. These devices just described, being small and strong, do not take up much room, and aiford a ready and convenient device for operation, while at the same time the eyes, when made of a bright metal or silver-mounted, give an ornamental appearance to the coffin or casket.

The lower portion of the straps are, by preference, made round, so that they can be readily turned to lock or unlock them from the eyes, or they may be made round throughout their entire length.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
