SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,237. dated March 29,1837- Applieation filed January 25, 1887.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THonAs MCGRATH, of the city and county of Albany, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful linprovements in Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 'in boxes for the journals of shafts which revolve at a high rate of speed, but especially for the shafts of grinding and polishing machines whose abrading-wheels are liable to wear out of truth, and thereby produce a tremulous or jumping motion of the shafts. To remedy this trouble I have devised a novel arrangement of springs for supporting the journal-boxes in the brackets, and have combined therewith an arrangement of cani-rin gs, whereby the springsupports for the journal-boxes can be quickly thrown out of use, and the boxes will then be borne on rigid non-yielding supports.
In the accompanying drawings, which are herein referred to and form part of this specieation, Figure l is an end elevation of my journal-box with the cam-rings drawn back to give all the supporting-springs full play; Fig. 2, a vertical section of Figi; Fig. 3, an end elevation of my journal-box with the two side cam-rings turned into position preparatory to bringing said box to bear upon its rigid bearings, and Fig. 4a like elevation showing said box resting on its rigid bearings.
As represented in the drawings, A is the pedestal or standard for the journal-box, provided with two side chambcred bosses, a, arranged in an inclined position, and a single vertical chambered boss, a', the latter being formed directly under the journal ofthe shaft B. The inner end of each side boss and the lower end of the lower boss is indented to form a series of alternating level and inclined planes or landings, (marked, respectively, 1, 2, and 8 on the drawings) the indentations in the boss a being formed much deeper than the others, for a purpose hereinafter explained.
Grepresents cam-rings fitted into the chambers of the bosses c, and provided with indentations which correspond with those on the bosses a, and which form a series of alternating level and inclined planes, that are marked, respectively, 4, 5, and 6, the arrangement of said planes being such that when the said rings are turned in one direction they (the said rings) Serial No. 225A-1S. will be forced toward the shaft B, and when tuilned in the opposite direction said rings will, by the interlocking of the indentations, as shown in Fig. l, be free to move outwardly from the shaft B.
C is a cam ring or cap fitted into the lower end of the boss a', and provided with indentations to form a series of alternating level and inclined planes which correspond to those on the lower end of the boss a', and which are marked, respectively, 7, 8, and 9. Said earnring is preferably provided with a radial handle, c, which is formed thereon for the purpose of turning said ring when occasion requires.
D represents springs fixed in each of the chambered bosses. The two springs in the side bosses have one end that bears against a roeking block, d, and the spring in the lower boss being fitted to bear against the upper end of the chamber of said boss and the cap C.
E is the journal-box, made to separate horizontally on a line with the center line of the shaft B. rihe lower part of said box is extended downwardly to forni the hub e, whose opposite sides are inclined to conform to the angle of the inner end of the side bosses, a. An annular groove, e, is formed in each of the inclined sides of l said hub to receive the end of the springs D, fixed in the chambers of the bosses e. y A central screw-bolt, F, preferably cast in, is pendent from the lower part of the box E, and, after passing through the boss a and cap C', is provided with a nut, f, by which the cap can be forced on to compress the spring D in the boss a to a sufficient degree to serve the purpose, while the box is used as a springbearing. A cheek-nut, j", bears against the nut f, to prevent the latter from working off during any tremulous movement of the box.
Vhen this journal-box is in use as aspringbearing, the cam-rings C are turned, as shown in Figs. l and 2, so that the indentations and projections on said rings and bosses a will interlock, and thereby a clear space will be left between said rings and the hub e, to permit the box E to play sidewise against the resistance of the springs of the side bosses, a. At the same time the ring C/ is turned into the position shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3, where sufficient clearance between the projections and indentations of said ring and lower end of the boss ci will be left to permit thebox E to play vertically IOO against the resistance of the spring in the boss a. To adjust the box E so as it will act as a rigid bearing, theside rings, C, are burned, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, Where the projections 1 and and 4 will bear against each other, to partially close up the spaces between the rings C and the sides of the hub E. Then by turning the ring Gso as to bring the projections 1 and 7 to bear againsteach, as shown in Fig. 4, the'box E Will be drawn down to bring the sides of the hub eagainst the side rings, C, and the bearing will then be perfectly rigid and unyielding.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a journal-box, the combination, with a pedestal provided with chambered bosses a and a, springs D, which are arranged s at the sides and bottom of the box E, and the camrings C and C', provided with indent-ations and inclined planes, which ooact with corresponding indentations and planes on the open ends of the chambered bosses, of the journal-box E,
provided with the hub e, having inclined sides,
and a central bolt, F, which passes thro ugh the cam-ring O', as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a journal-box, the combination, With the pedestal A, having an in clined'chambered boss, a, at each side of thebox E, and a vertical chambered boss, a', directly under said boX, the open ends of all of said bosses having a series of alternating indentations and planes, as herein set forth, the springs D; contained in said bosses, and the cam-rings C and C', provided with alternatingindentations and planes which correspond 'to those in the end oi' the bosses, of the journal-box E, having its opposite sides inclined to conform to the angle of the bosses a, and having a central bolt, F,Wl1ich passes through the cam ring or cap C', the said cam-rings being adapted to bring the box E to a rigid bearing, as herein specified.
