KNIFE POLISHER AND CLEANER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,174, dated March 29, 1887.

Application filed July 1, 1886. Serial No. 206,829.

To all whom. it may concern.-

Beit known that I, JOHN BYRON RILEY, gentleman, of Toronto, in the county of York, Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife Cleaners and Polishers, (for which I have received Letters Patent in Canada, No. 23,156, dated January l2, 1886,) of which the jfollowing is a specification.

My invention relates to knife cleaners and polishers, and has for its object to reduce the labor and trouble in cleaning and polishing knives, as well as t-o reduce the wear caused by the manner in which they are now cleaned and polished.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved knife cleaner and polisher in use; Fig. 2, a view showing the same opened, and Fig. 3 a cross-sectional view.

A indicates a block, preferably of wood and of any desired shape or form; and B, a covering of carpet, woolen goods, or other suitable textile fabric, secured to the block A at the front and rear edges of the latter. The covering B is of about twice the width of the block A, and is secured to the rear edge of the latter about on aline passing through its middle, thus enabling the covering B to be folded over upon itself and forming a flexible textile leaf, B', as shown in Figs. l and 2. The coverin g B may be secured to the block by means of tacks, cement, or in any manner desired.

The covering B, or at least that portion secured to the block A, is divided into two parts, C and D, which may or may not be separated from each other by a strip, as desired. One of these portions, C, is to be dampened and sprinkled over with any suitable cleaning or polishing powder or material, while D is designed to be kept always dry. Upon the forward edge of the portion D is secured a surface, E, of chamoisskin, rough leather, crocus-cloth, or similar material, and where the skin E passes over the edge of the block A the latter is rounded or beveled.

From the above construction it follows that by placing the knife upon the previously-prepared portion or surface O, and bringing the fiap or leaf B to bear thereupon, it is only necessary to move the knife back and forth (No model.) Patented in Canada January 1Q, 1886, No. 23,156.

longitudinally with one hand, the other hand being left free to hold the nap or leaf firmly down upon the knife, and, besides, pressing the latter upon the cleaning-surface, escape of dirt and dust into the`room is prevented. After the knife has been cleaned it is moved over the dry portion D, where it is polished. By making the edge of the block beveled I am enabled to clean and polish the shoulder at the end of the handle of the knife.

I provide the block A with handles G at each end, by which to carry the device, and I provide a strap, F, byv which to hang the cleaner up when not in use, the powder being prevented from escaping or dropping out because of the folding of the covering B upon itself.

I am aware that it has been proposed to construct knifecleaners of textile material secured to boardsA which were hinged together; but I believe that my device is much better than those referred to, because ofits simplicity and cheapness. v

By the employment of the dexible textile leaf or flap B', I am enabled to apply pressure with the hand to a greater or less extent, and am also enabled to adapt the cleaner to other articles than knives, as the exibility of the flap or leaf allows the latter to adapt itself to the contour or inequalities in the surfaces of different articles, which result cannot be secured where the top and bottoni surfaces are secured to unyielding blocks.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. In a knife-cleaner, in combination with a block, A, a covering, B, secured thereto, and provided with a flexible flap adapted to be folded upon that part of the covering secured to the block, substantiallyas shown and 9o ,block and provided with a iiap, B', adapted lOO 5.
