TRY-SQUAREAND BEVEL.
SPECIPECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,161, dated March 29, 1887.
(No model.)
To @ZZ whom zit may concern:
Be it known that I, ELTON l). KENDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barre, in the county ofVashing-ton and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Squares, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in squares; and it consists of the peculiar combination of devices and novel construction and arrangement of the various part-s for service, substantially as hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The primary object of my invention is to provide an improved square, of simple and durable construction, which can be easily and readily adjusted to mark off bevel or miter joints of any degree of inclination or angle, and which can also be manufactured very cheaply.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a square embodying my improvements, Figure l is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 2 is an elevation from one side ofthe stock, showing the blade in end elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line a; a' of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view ot' the parts ot' my improved square detached from one another.
Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures, Adesignates thestoek of my improved square, whieh is preferably rectangular in shape, with iiat right-angled sides. This stock may be made partly of wood or metal, or partly of wood and faced with metal, as may be preferred; and it has a central longitudinal opening or passage, a., therein, one end of this opening being enlarged, as at a, for a purpose hereinafter described. A clampingbolt, B, extends through this central longitudinal opening in the stock, and one end ofthe bolt is exteriorly screwthreaded, as at I), and receives a binding thumb-nut, O, which works thereon to draw the head of the bolt within the enlargement a of the opening a, for a purpose presently described, a washer, c, being interposed between the binding-nut and one end of the stock. The opposite end of the draw-bolt is provided with an enlarged head,
b', which is formed integral with the same, the outer surface of the head being rounded to adapt it to be snugly fitted in the enlargement a of the longitudinal opening in the stock, so as to compress or draw the bolt rml y within the stock. The enlarged head of the bolt is slotted longitudinally to provide two yielding jaws, D, which are thus formed integral with the draw bolt or iron, and between these jaws is fitted the blade E of the implement. One of the jaws is provided with a transverse opening, whieh is interior-.ly screw-threaded, and in this opening works the threaded shank of a thumb-screw, F, which serves to very tirmly clamp the blade to the draw-bolt.
The blade lof the implement is provided with an angular' portion, E', which is adapted for cutting miter 0r bevel joints of any angle or inclination, and the blade E proper is adapted for squaring purposes, the same as other implements ot' the class to which my invention relates.
The washer c is provided with a notch, c, in one edge, in which is iitted a pin or key, O', which has a projecting shoulder, c, which 'fits or takes over one edge of the stoel: A of the implement, so as to prevent the washer from movement on the draw-bolt when the binding-nut impinges upon the same in tightening the draw-bolt in the stock.
The blade of the implement is first properly adjusted in the draw iron to the required positition or angle by fitting the same between the yielding jaws, and the thumb-screw operated to clamp the blade against movement. The thumb-.nut C is now rotated to draw upon the bolt, and thus retract the head ofthe same within the enlargement a of the stock to cause the walls and edges of the same to impiuge upon the split head of the bolt, and thus force the jaws formed by the said head toward each other and' upon the blade. lf desired, the blade of the implement can be properly and accurately adjusted in the jaws before the thumbnut C has been tightened, care being taken that the said blade shall lie at right angles to the parallel sides of the stock.
The parts are very rigidly and firmly held together, and they can be readily loosened to permit the blade to be adjusted to the proper ICO position to adapt the implement to the dilerent angles or positions as required by various classes of work.
The operation of my invention will be very readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it relates without further description thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A square having a stock, the draw iron or bolt passing therethrough' and having the clamping-jaws, the blade tted between the jaws, and the binding-nut fitted on the threaded end of the draw-iron, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth. a 2. Asquare having a stock provided with a central opening, the draw iron or bolt passing throughthe opening and having the split head forming the jaws, the blade fitted between the jaws and provided with the angularportion or section, and the binding-nut fitted on the threaded end of the draw iron or bolt, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
3, A square having the stock provided with a central longitudinal opening, the draw-iron having the yielding jaws, a thumb-screw working in one of the jaws, a blade fitted' between the jaws and clamped therein by the thumbscrew, and a nut working on the threaded end of the draw-bolt, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
4. A square having the central longitudinal opening provided at one end' with an enlargement, the draw bolt having the enlarged rounded head split to form the yielding jaws, a thumb-screw working in one of the jaws, the nut working on the threaded end ofthe draw-bolt, the blade fitted between the jaws, and a .washer interposedY between one. end'of the stock and the nut, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
5. In a square, the handle or stock, the draw iron or bolt journaled in the stock, binding means for holding the draw-iron rigid, and clamping-jaws on the draw-iron for the blade.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
lVitnesses:
DANIEL BIsBEE, JOHN C. BIsBEE.
