AUTOMATIC CUT-OFF FOR WATER=PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,085, dated March 29, 1887.

Be itknown that I, \VALKER G. BROWNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, haveinventeda new and useful Automatic Cut- Off for ater-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention is a device for automatically closing the valves of water-pipes, the actuating-power being derived from the unequal contraction of two metals having different coutraeting qualities; and it consists of details, as will be hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a plan of the device. Fig. 11 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. III is a detail showing the bolt and bar by which the valve is held open.
In the figures, 1 represents a water-supply pipe. 2 is a valve, preferably of the kind known as stop and waste valves. The stem ofthis valve is provided with a lever, 3, having on its outer end a weight, t. This weighted 3c lever is held in an elevated position by the bar 5, which is connected thereto by the link 6, the bar5 having on its upperportion ahole for the entrance of the bolt 7. The bolt 7 forms a part of the beam 8, which is pivoted to the upper ends of the rocking fulcrums 9, 10, and 11, the lower ends of the rocking fulcrums being pivoted on the lugs on the base-plate 12. The rocking fulcrums 13, 14, and 15 are also pivoted to lugs on the base-plate and carry on 0 their upper ends the beam 17, having on one end the loop 18, which has a hole for the passage of the bolt 7, as shown. The bar 5 also passes through the loop 18. The valve 3 being set. to be open when the weighted lever is 5 at its highest point, it is held in that position by the bolt 7 passing through the bar 5, as shown in Fig. III. The rocking fulcrum 10 is of a metal having a high expansive quality, preferably brass. On the lowering of the temperature the rocking fulcrum 10 will shrink to a greater extent than those marked 9 and 11, which will bring the upper pivotal joint of the rocking fulcrum 1O relatively nearer than the upper pivotal joint of the rocking fulcrums 9 and 11 to their common pivot at the bottom ends. The shrinkage of the rocking fulcrum 9,-being about the same as that of the fulcrum 11, will keep the beam 8 about level and will force it backwardly,or toward the upper pivot of the rocking fulcrum 11, on account of the excessive shrinkage of the rocking fulcrum 10. These rocking fulcrums 9, 10, and 11 are iden- 7o tical in their construction and material with those marked 13, 14, and 15, and their operation is the same. The beam 17 is identical in construction with the beam 8, except that instead of having a bolt, 7, on its end it is pro- Vidcd with the loop 18. On the greater sh rinkage of the fulcrums l0 and 14 the beams 8 and 17 are drawn apart,when, the loop 18 holding the bar 5, the bolt 7 will be withdrawn from the hole in the bar, thus releasing the weight and allowing it to fall and close the valve.
\Vhenever the temperature shall rise, the expansion of the rocking fulcrums 9, 10, 11, 13,
14, and 15 will cause the bolt 7 to again enter the loop, when the bar 5, being raised and thus opening the valve, may be hooked on the bolt and hold thevalve open until a sufficientshrinkage of the rocking fulcrums shall again release The rocking fulcrums 9 and 13 are adjusta- 9O ble in length bya right and left hand screw on the opposite ends of the central part, to regulate the degree of temperature at which the bolt 7 will be withdrawn from the bar 5.
