Lawson {32] Priority Dec. 26, 1968 Attorney-Browdy and'Neimark [33] Japan ABSTRACT: Each leg of a desk includes a long rodlike pipe [54] INVISIBLE LEG TYPE DESK made of iron sheet to the upper end of which a crossing 9 Chhnss Drawing Figs member is welded at its front portion. The leg is screwed at a [52] US. Cl 312/194 rear portion of said crossing member to each comer of a frame [5l Int. Cl v. A47b 17/00 mounted on the back of a top board of the desk. A stack [50] Field of Search 312/194, drawer on one side of the desk or stack drawers on two sides 21, 107, 239, 314 are mounted on the desk between the frame andthe leg.
DIVISIBLE LEG TYPE DESK This invention relates to a divisible leg type desk in which firm structure of supporting leg is attained without providing any connecting rod between each leg on the front, rear, right and left sides of the desk, thereby enabling mass production of such a desk for simplified manufacture and obtaining good design, and especially in which, each supporting leg constructed in a divisible type form is mounted on a frame within the top board and fixing means for stack drawers at one side or both sides of the desk is also provided on the frame under the top board, thereby greatly simplifying the exterior design than that heretofore in use. According to this invention, a reduction of basic materials for stack drawers is attained and a well designed and strong desk with one or two sides of stack drawers can be provided through a simplified manufacturing process.
One embodiment of this invention will be explained with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view illustrating a mounting structure of a conventional stack drawer;
FIGS. 2 through are concerned with this invention, in which FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a desk the stack drawers of which are mounted on the frame of a top board of the desk, FIG. 3 is a perspective view illustrating a state of mounting of the divisible legs, FIG. 4 is a plan view of the same and FIG. 5 is a sectional side view of the divisible legs.
FIG. 1 shows a mounting structure of stack drawers 2 of a desk with a fixing frame C provided according to a conventional mounting manner in desks with a top board 1 on divisible-type supporting legs 3.
Contrary to this, the structures as shown in FIGS. 2 through 5 are common in a basic structure according to this invention and they are of a specially luxurious and well designed type, that is a type of desk in which each leg and a stack or stacks 2 are mounted on a frame under the top board 1.
In the present invention, a stack drawer or drawers can be mounted very easily by this structure and manner of fixing of the divisible-type legs on the top board 1 as explained with reference to FIGS. 3 to 5. That is, the present invention is characterized in that a long rodlike pipe made of iron sheet is used as leg rod of the desk, and the inner periphery of a front crossing portion of a crossing member, which is provided at a rear crossing portion thereof with tapped holes for mounting, is integrally welded to theupper end surface of said pipe, thus each supporting leg of the desk being mounted to a frame 11 at the corner thereof, the frame which is provided on the back of the top board 1. The desk according to this invention is provided with a stack drawer or drawers which make the desk complete for use.
Next, FIGS. 3 to 5 show one embodiment having a specially well designed structure of a leg rod and other portions as well as basic features of this invention.
As shown in FIG. 5, the structure of each supporting leg B is such that a long rodlike inner pipe 4 square-shaped in section is inserted through an outer pipe 3 squared-shaped in section and extends at the upper portionthereof beyond the outer pipe 3 to form a step portion 5, and small projection 6 provided on the upper and lower parts of the wall surface of the inner pipe 4 which are used to press the inner pipe 4 against the outer pipe 3.
Inserted and mounted at the lower end of the inner pipe 4 is an adjuster fixing means 7 for accurately adjusting the height As shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the divisible supporting legs B each having the same configuration are screwed to' the top board 1 through the crossing member 8. Explaining in detail, the legs are secured to the frame 11, which is mounted on the back of the top board 1, and in turn to the top board 1 through the crossing member 8 welded to the leg by screwing the member 8 to the frame 11 with bolts 12 with the aid of the angle-shaped reinforcement 13 at each arm of the frame 11 extending from the crossing portion thereof. Reinforcement and good exterior configuration are obtained by aligning the outer end face 14 of the top surface 1 with the outer face of the supporting legs B and the front plate of the stack drawers 2. The frame 11, which is mounted on the back of the top surface 1, is provided at its proper position with reinforcement rods 15 of angle shape. A spacer is disposed between the corner provided by the outer end surfaces 14 of the top board I 1 and the upper end portion of the inner pipe 4 of the leg B to of the supporting legs at the lower end of the outer pipe 3. The
inner periphery of a front crossing portion of a crossing member 8, which is provided with tapped holes 9, 9 at a rear crossing portion, is welded to said step portion 5 to closely contact the supporting leg with said front crossing portion of the crossing member 8. On one edge of said supporting leg B, there is provided at a lower predetermined position thereof a notch 10 for fitting a fixture (not shown) to support both stack drawers, shown in FIG. 2, at their lower parts.
reinforce each comer of the top board 1, and this reinforcement is attained and danger is avoided by forming an inwardly bent surface by bending further edge of the outer end face 14 of the top board 1. Assembly of this strong desk is accomplished by the fixing of each leg B to the top board 1. As mentioned above, the frame 11 provided with the angle-shaped reinforcement rods 15 is mounted on the back of the top board 1 and the notch 10 is formed at the lower predetermined position on one edge of the supporting leg B. Accordingly, the stack drawer or drawers 2 can be easily mounted by inserting the fixture (not shown) into said notch 10 and fixing the upper edge of the drawer or drawers 2 to the frame 11 mounted under the top board 1 and the angle-shaped reinforcement rod 15.
According to the present invention, each supporting leg B constituting a desk is manufactured in advance in a divisible and identical form, the upper end portion of the inner pipe 4 of the leg is welded to the front crossing portion of the crossing member 8 whereby welding operation is simplified and the crossing member 8 is screwed to the frame 11 mounted on the top surface 1 through the angle-shaped reinforcement 13 at the rear crossing portion of the member 8 whereby fixed moment of the supporting leg B and the top board 1 increasing extremely. Such a large fixed moment is provided only by screw means in the assembly process, and therefore in fixing the supporting legs B to the top board 1, there is advantages that the features coming from welding and screwing are used in full and well-designed desk is obtained as the upper end of the supporting leg B is mounted very easily. This structure gives an effective of firm mounting to the forces acting in any directions, because the legs and the frame mounted on the top board 1 are in a firm mounting relation coming from the integral structure of the frame 11 and the crossing member 8 which is attained by the arrangement made between the crossing member 8 and the angle-shaped reinforcement 13.
For the specially luxurious and well designed desk as shown in FIGS. the effect as above mentioned is of course obtainable and the structure is very strong due to mutual fitting between the inner and outer pipes constituting the supporting leg B itself. In this way, the stack drawer or drawers 2 can be mounted between the frame 11 under the top board 1 and the supporting legs B firmly constructed without front, rear, right and left connecting rods for each leg rod of the desk. There is no unshapely appearance such as appears in an outwardly exposed manner between the top board and the stack drawer(s) in the conventional desk and there is also no need to provide a fixed frame. The upper fixing means for the stack drawers is provided on the inner side of the outer end face thereby providing very strong structure, and therefore the simply designed desk with stack drawer or drawers will be inexpensively produced in large quantities.
The structure in accordance with this invention will also be effective in use for a frame structure of the file cabinet and the like, particularly in the application to the mounting portion between the leg rod and the top board.
