Abstract
An upright lock assembly for sliding windows comprises a rod member slidably received in a sleeve member and held in adjustable relation relative to the same by means of setscrews. The rod member has a free upper end pivotally mounted about a horizontal axis to the upper sash of an upper window and the sleeve member has a free lower end removably accommodated in a socket mounted to the upper sash of a lower window. A padlock serves to further secure the lower end of the sleeve in the socket member.

PATENTEU AUG t 7 l97l IN VENTOR. CARL T. SAVIO MARGARET M. SAVIO WINDOW SAFETY LOCK BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to an improved window safety lock, especially adapted for use with vertical double hung windows."
Already known in the art are safety lock assemblies for windows which serve to provide adequate security'against opening of the relative locked windows bypotential intruders outside the windows or any other unauthorized person. Additionally, such lock assemblies should be easily removable in case of an emergency, e.g., fire, and the assembly should furthermore permit partial opening of at least one of the windows at a variable distance, e.g., for venting purposes.
One such known lock assembly, described in my pending application Ser. No. 730,326, filed May 20, 1968, now Pat. No 3,512,82l, consists of a pair of interacting locking bars with one of the bars having a threaded head-portion in which the lower end of the other of the two bars is threadably and adjustably received. The respective free upper and lower ends of the locking bars are respectivelysecured to the upper sashes of the upper and lower windows.
Although this assembly efiectively prevents the windows from being opened from the outside, the threaded joint connection between the two bars does not permit easy removal of the assembly from the windows or unlimited opening thereof.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention provides an improved window lock assembly which positively overcomes the above disadvantage and which can be easily installed on or removed from windows and which, moreover, permits unlimited opening of at least one of the windows. g
The improved lock assembly designed according to the present invention and adapted particularly for use in locking vertical double hung windows, comprisestwo upright elongated telescoping members, one a lower sleeve member and the other anupper rod member received in the sleeve member and'both of substantially equal length and each fully slidably adjustable over the entire length of the other of the members. The telescoping members are' held into locking position between the upper sashes of the upper and lower windows and are secured against longitudinal and rotational movement by means of first locking members which further permit, upon looseningof the same, desired partial or complete opening of at least one of the windows. The lower end portion of the sleeve member is removably accommodated in a socket on the lower one of the sashes and is securely locked into position by means of a conventional padlock while the upper end portion of the rod member is pivotable about a horizontal axis on the upper one of the sashes so as to permit desired outward swiveling of the assembly to disengage the latter from the windows upon disengagement of the lower portion of the sleeve from its socket.
- BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF- THE DRAWINGS Other objects and advantages of this invention will appear from the following detailed description which is in such clear, conciseand exact terms as will enable any person skilled in the art to make and use the same when taken in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, and in which:

FIG. 2 is a side view of the construction shown in FIG. I with parts shown in section;
FIG. 3 is a side cross-sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 2, and illustrating the socket used in the embodiment shown in FIG. 4; and
FIG. 4 is an enlarged part sectional exploded view of the window lock assembly of FIG. 1.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals index like parts and with attention initially drawn to FIG. I, the window shown as a frame 1 slidably mounting a pair of window sashes 2,3. The sashes 2,3 are secured against sliding movement by means of a window lock assembly, generally indicated at 4. The assembly 4, as best shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, is seen to comprise a baseplate 5 provided with an upstanding tubular socket 6 having a main or longitudinal bore 7 and a transverse bore 8.
The baseplate 5 is provided with axially spaced countersunk holes. The holes 9 receive screws 10 which serve to secure the baseplate 5 to the upper edge of the lower sash 2, FIG. 1.
Secured. to the upper portion of the sash 3 by means of countersunk holes 11 and screws 12, is a base plate 13 provided with two brackets 14. The brackets 14 define axially aligned bores 15 which serve to receive a pin 16 which defines a horizontal pivot axis on the base plate 13 in perpendicularly relation relative to the bore 7 of socket 6 in the lower base plate 5.
Suspended from and pivotably mounted with its upper end about the pivot pin 16, is an elongated rod member 17. The rod member 17 is slidably received in an elongated sleeve member 18 which,with its lower end portion 19, FIGS. 2 and 3, is removably accommodated in the bore 7 of socket 6. The members 17 and 18 are vertically telescopically arranged in that both are reciprocable relative to each other and each is fully slidably adjustable over the entire length of the other. In expanded condition the members 17 and 18 together have a length at least equal to the distance between the upper sashes of the upper and lower windows in closed or locked position of the latter. Of course, this length is variable, e.g., when it is desired that at least one of the two windows is partially opened, e.g., for venting purposes, etc. i 0
Provided in direction of elongation of the sleeve member 18 are a plurality of threaded holes 20 which receive setscrews 21. The setscrews 21 via the threaded holes 20, serve to lock the rod member 17 at any desired height within the sleeve member 18 and further secure the two members against undesired longitudinal movement.
Conversely, the setscrews 21 are loosened when it is desired that the degree of insertions of the rod member 17 in sleeve member 18 is to be varied. In locked position of the windows, the degree of insertion of rod member 17 in sleeve member 18, of course, is primarily dependent on the distance between the two baseplates 5 and 13 on the upper and lower sashes, 2 and 3.
Instead of utilizing setscrews for interlocking the telescoping members 17 and 18, the latter may be provided with a plurality of correspondingly spaced transversely aligned bores in which, for example, a U-shaped locking member may be inserted and accommodated to interlock the members 17 and 18.
As shown in FIG. 3, the lower end portion 19 of the sleeve member 18 is securely interlocked with the socket 6 by means of a conventional padlock and key combination, generally indicated at 22 to provide a further locking means which prevents unauthorized removal of the lock assembly 4 from the windows.
In case it is desired that either the upper or lower window is to be partially opened, it is only necessary to loosen the setscrews 21 and adjust the relative total length of the telescoping members 17 and 18 while the sleeve member 18 remains interlocked with the socket 6 by the padlock 22.
As shown in FIG. 3, the lower end 19 is provided with a transverse bore 23 which, upon insertion of the lower end 19 into the socket 6, is arranged to extend coaxially with the transverse bore 8 in the socket 6. One arm 24 of the U-shaped locking bar 25 of the padlock combination 22 is received in and extends through the bores 8 and 22 and secures the sleeve member 18 against longitudinal and rotational movement.
In removing the window lock assembly from the sashes 2 and 3, the padlock 22 is removed from the U-shaped locking bar 25 and the arm 24 is disengaged from the bores 8 and 23 of the socket 6 and lower end 19. respectively. Subsequently. the setscrews 21 are loosened and the lower sleeve member 18 is upwardly slidably displaced on the upper rod member 17 until the lower end 19 or the former clears the top edge 60 of the socket 6v The telescoping members 17 and 18 can then be swiveled in direction away from the base plate 5 and socket 6 by means of the pivoted upper end section of the rod member 17 and either ofthe two wind' iws can then be opened.
It will be noted in FIG. 3 that three screws l are used to secure the socket 6 and base plate to the sash 2. Access to the screw 10 is prohibited. It will be noted that the outer screws 10 are covered by the locking bar 25 of the padlock combination 22, but the inner screw 10 is further protected and covered in addition by the lower end of the tube 18 While one might be successful in removing the outer screws 10, he would not have access to the center screw 10 This adds to the further safety of the lock assembly While this locking bar assembly has been described in connection with upper and lower sash windows it should be understood that the assembly can be extended horizontally and used with horizontally slidable window sashes. and thus provide a simple yet effective manner to positively lock two sliding windows against movement relative to each other. The lock assembly as disclosed also permits partial or unlimited opening of one window with respect to the other.

A window lock assembly adapted for locking vertical double hung windows, said assembly comprising a first baseplate securably to the upper sash of the lower one of the double hung windows, an upright socket projecting from said first baseplate and having a longitudinal bore. an elongated tubular member extending axially upwardly from said socket and having a lower end portion removably fitted into said bore. a second baseplate securable to the upper -ash of he upper one of the d uble hung windows. means defining a horizontal pivot axis on said second baseplate in crpendicular relation relati e to aid ongitudinal bore. an elongated rod member adyustablv telescopically accommodated at ea t in pan in said tubular member and having an upper end portion pivotably mounted about said horizontal pivot axis said e ngated rod and tubulai members together donning n length ub stantially equal it. the distance between said fir t and \CL'Olld baseplaics. and locking means for interlocking said tubular member with said rod member against longitudinal movement, whereby said upper and lower windows at mmovable relative to each other when said locking means holds said tubular member and said rod member in locked relation.

Claims (5)
1. A window lock assembly adapted for locking vertical double hung windows, said assembly comprising a first baseplate securable to the upper sash of the lower one of the double hung windows, an upright socket projecting from said first baseplate and having a longitudinal bore, an elongated tubular member extending axially upwardly from said socket and having a lower end portion removably fitted into said bore, a second baseplate securable to the upper sash of the upper one of the double hung windows, means defining a horizontal pivot axis on said second baseplate in perpendicular relation relative to said longitudinal bore, an elongated rod member adjustably telescopically accommodated at least in part in said tubular member and having an upper end portion pivotably mounted about said horizontal pivot axis, said elongated rod and tubular members together defining a length substantially equal to the distance between said first and second baseplates, and locking means for interlocking said tubular member with said Rod member against longitudinal movement, whereby said upper and lower windows are immovable relative to each other when said locking means holds said tubular member and said rod member in locked relation.
2. An assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein said tubular member comprises a plurality of threaded recesses in direction of its elongation, and wherein said locking means comprises screw members interlocking said tubular member and said rod member via said recesses in the former.
3. An assembly as defined in claim 2, wherein said screw members are Allen-type set screws having hexagonal screw heads.
4. An assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein said socket and said lower end portion of said sleeve member have concentric transverse bores, and wherein said locking means comprises a padlock assembly including a U-shaped locking bar having a pair of locking arms with one of said arms inserted and accommodated in said concentric bores of said socket and said lower end portion to immovably interlock the former with the latter.
5. An assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein said upright socket projected from the first baseplate is closed and has a screw opening therein, said first baseplate having other screw openings laterally displaced from said central screw opening in radial alignment therewith, said locking means having a locking bar adapted to overlie all three of said screw openings when extended laterally through the socket and the lower end of the tubular member lying therein.
