Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,982, dated July 22, 1862.

Be 1t known that we, FERDINAND GARBER and SYLvANUs SEIMER, of Terre Haute,

` county of Vigo, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Machine which we designate a Dirt Scraper, Leveler, and Distributer, and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and 'exact description thereof, reference bei ng4 had to the accompanying drawings,and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Figure lis a perspective bottom view of our machine, from which we may describe more accurately its various parts and combinations, reference being had at the same time to Fig.

2, which is a top perspective view ofthe machine with the attachments of roller-levers, the., which will be described hereinafter.

The spaces 3 4 6 7 8 9 10 11 are left open to scan as much of the bottom part of the machine as may be practicable in our reference from Fig. l to Fig. 2. These spaces are closed in the constructed machine and present plane superficies.- Fig. 5, however, is an open space yin the constructed machine.

Letters a a are a scraper,which lines the rear trough as far as the dotted line d d d d and is inclined forward at a' convenient angle to answer the use of a scraper simply. The trough is bounded by the straight lines 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 S 9 10.

Letters m m are wires, and n n MW nm braces, which'are designed to give strength and durability to the scraper. The wiresarel attached to the cross-beam s s s at c c', and pass through the scraper, being riveted on the 'rear wooden frame-work of the trough outside, as at g g.

Letters w w are side guards.

Letters h Zi are handles, as seen at h h' in drawings, Fig. 2. Y

Letter Z is awheel which turns on a iiXed or movable shaft, R R, as the case may be. (Also shown in drawings, Fig. 2.) The same may be p a plain wheel, with or without spokes.

Letter G is a roller which may be solid or hollow, and is articulated to the leversb b', as atp p', by means of a rod passing through the center, the same having a thread 'and is furnished with a nut.

Letters ua are wires attached to the levers, as at o e', which answer as braces to keep the same parallel with each other, thereby preserving a uniform power of leverage.

Letter y is a handle connecting the ends of the levers, as at e c.

The objectof ourinvention consists in facilitating the labor usually employed in leveling and grading streets or roads or fields, and distributing ground or sand from one place to another, 'thereby economiz'ing labor in the threefold uses ot' our machine as scraper, leveler, and distributer. It dispenses with the use of shovel or spade or other implementsheretofore used to accomplish the same objects. The

Thelevers are the instrument or means, with the roller as a fulcrum, by which the distributing and leveling are accomplished. The side guards', which are a part of the trough, are designed to keep the ground" in the same by reason of their structure, as

`seen in Fig. l, after the scraper has been drawn to its angular depth, and also to give strength and durability to the trough, as they form a part of the same.

The handles IL h are slide-handles to be used in lifting the machine in ordinary eases of convenience or necessity, and transporting or conveying the same by hand when empty from one place to another. In such case the roller is brought over the machine by an easy elevation, where it will remain stationary by its inclination forward, supported'by the handle y and the screws :c fr', upon which it turns, the levers being tapped at those points,thereby affording the easylifting of the roller and the depression of the Same in every circumstance herein contemplated. r

The machine may also be used for all pur-y poses herein contemplated, (save the com pressure which the roller adds to it,) when the attachment of roller, levers, &c.-, are taken away. In such case the handles It h become the means of controlling the machine. To give greater strength to the machine at 1 r and f f, bolts may be used, passing through the frame-Work at those places. f

NVhat We claim as our invention, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is

l. A combination of Wheel Z and roller G with its levers b b and braces.

2. The scraper a a and trongh, with their braces all subserving the uses of scraping, leveling, and distributing, substantially as set forth.
