FAUCET FOR OIL-CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,704, dated March 22, 1887.

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BANKER, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, and a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets for Oil-Gans, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, refercnce being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a faucetnozzle of cans adapted to hold oil or other fluids; and my invention consists in the hereinafter-dcscribedimprovements upon the faucet-screw for which Letters Patent were granted March 25, 1884, No. 295,794, to Michael OConnor.

A is the metallic plate which serves to attach the faucet device to a metal can.
13 is the sheet-metal screw-socket, the inner or low r end of which is enlarged so as to form a chamber, Z1, from which extends the discharge-spout Z). The plate, the chamber, and the screw-socket are preferably all formed of one and the same piece of sheet metal.
G is the valve, the body of which is a sheetmetal screw-stein, c. On the inner or lower end of the stem 0 is a disk or flange, c, which may be of the same piece of metal with said stem. Upon this disk or flange is placed and supported the pachingpiecc 0 The screwstenl iits into the screw-socket 13. Upon the upward or outer end of the stem 0 is a thumbpiecc, c, fixed thereto, by means of which the stem and its valve are operated to be screwed up and down in the socket, and the valve to be thus opened and closed. When the thumb piece is turned so as to open the valve, the chamber Z) is opened all round, and the oil or other contents of the can passes freely to the discharge-spout.
My improvements on the scrcwiaucet above described, which is substantially that shown in the Letters Patent No. 295,794, hereinbefore mentioned, are as follows:
E is a chamber formed on the plate A contiguous to the chamber 1 and communicating therewith through an opening, If, in the wall of the chamber b, as shown. This chamber E has an opening in its outer wall, as at 0, lead ing externally of the device, as shown. By this means I provide an air vent or inlet to the faucet, thus improving the discharge of 5 the oil through the chamber 1) and spout b, and at the same time preventing the oil from escaping through the air-vent when the can is being emptied to the exterior of the can,
any oil which may pass through the vent b 6 being caught in the chamber E, and flowing back thence through said opening I) into the chamber b, and thence to the body of the can. The venting of the faucet is thus accomplished at the same timcthat the soiling of the exterior 6 of the faucet and can by the escape of the oil at the vent is prevented.
My further improvement consists in a flat collar, F, fixed upon the stem 0 and placed at such a distance above the disk or flange c 7 relatively to the I thickness of the packing piece 0 that said packing-piece lies loosely between the said collar and flange,and has vertical play on the stem between said collar and flange. I prefer to form an annular corruga- 7 tion or rib, f, on the under or inner side of the plate A, arranged to engage against .the upper. face of the packing-piece 6-. By means of this arrangement of the packing-piece, when the valve is closed, said packing-piece will not 8r:
be rotated with the stern and the flange c, as it would if ti ght-ly clam ped between and held by said flange and a cap on the stem in1pinging on the packing; but said packing-piece when brought up against the plate A will re 8 main stationary while the stem and flange c are further rotated to tighten the valve on its seat, whereby the wear of the packing-piece by friction against the valve-seat is avoided.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire 9 to secure byLetters Patent, is-- 1. In a vented screw-faucet for fluid-holdin g vessels, the combination, with the attachingplate A,giving the valve-seat,the screw-socket B, the chamber 1), directly atthe inner end of 5 said socket and having spout b, and the threaded valve-stem a, carrying valve 0, arranged to play in said socket, of the chamber E, contiguous to said chamber 1), and connnuni eating therewith by opening b, and having an I air-vent, e, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2.
