Abstract

A device for compensating for the wear of a grinding wheel in a grinding machine comprises an actuating mechanism adapted for effecting movement of the grinding wheel to compensate for the wear of the latter in conformity with the results of measurement of the work being machined. The apparatus further includes a measuring apparatus adapted to act upon the actuating mechanism. The measuring apparatus includes a base resiliently fixed in the casing of the measuring apparatus, a measuring spindle resiliently fixed in the base, a pusher operatively coupled with the base to move the latter towards the work being measured, and an output unit adapted to fix the size of the work being measured once the latter contacts the measuring spindle.

' PATENTED JuLznsn SHEET 2 [IF 2 L llllllll II "III DEVICE FOR COMPENSATING FOR GRINDING WHEEL WEAR The present invention relates to grinding machines, and has particular reference to devices for compensating for the wear of the grinding wheel in a grinding machine, said devices featuring compensation for the wear of the grinding wheel as effected by virtue of an actuating mechanism in keeping with the results of measurement of the workpiece being machined made by a measuring apparatus. The invention can be used for machining high-precision workpieces.
Known in the art are devices for compensating for the wear of the grinding wheel in a grinding machine, wherein the wear of the grinding wheel is compensated for by virtue of an ac tuating mechanism in keeping with'the results of measurement of the workpiece being machined performed by a measuring apparatus (cf. British Pat. No. 976,647 CLB3D).
However, in said devices the function of their measuring apparatus consists in delivering a signal to compensate for the wear of the grinding wheel when said measuring apparatus determines the maximum possible size of the workpiece being measured. Moreover, the actuating mechanism in said devices is set for a definite travel of the grinding wheel to compensate for the wear thereof, which fact adversely affects the grinding accuracy due to an increase in the size deviation range of the workpieces under machining up to the value of said grinding wheel travel.
Furthermore, once the grinding wheel has been dressed, it must be set in a position ensuring a predetermined accuracy of machining, for which purpose the actuating mechanism set for a definite travel of the grinding wheel, travels repeatedly until the sizes of the workpieces being machined become equal to the nominal ones.
As a result, the auxiliary time is considerably increased, and a part of workpieces are subject to rejection.
It is an object of the present invention to eliminate the disadvantages mentioned above.
It is a specific object of the present invention to provide a device to compensate for the wear of the grinding wheel, whose application in grinding machines would ensure high accuracy of machining and reduction of the auxiliary time.
Said object is achieved in a device for compensating for the wear of the grinding wheel in a grinding machine, comprising an actuating mechanism and a measuring apparatus, said apparatus incorporating a measuring spindle and an output unit and being adapted to act upon said actuating mechanism which causes the grinding wheel to move to compensate for its wear in conformity with the result of measurement of the machined workpiece made by said measuring apparatus, according to the invention, said measuring spindle is resiliently fixed in the base which, in turn, is resiliently fixed in the casing of the measuring apparatus and is operatively coupled with a pusher which actuates said base together with said measuring spindle to move towards the workpiece being measured so that once the measuring spindle has touched the workpiece, the base, while travelling with respect to the measuring spindle actuates the output unit that determines the size of the workpiece being measured and delivers a control signal to the actuating mechanism to effect the compensating movement of the grinding wheel.
Said output unit may comprise at least one flat spring with one of its ends fixed in place on the measuring spindle and with the other end, on a flange rigidly connected with the base and mounted movably with respect to the measuring spindle, provision being, made therein for 'an electric contactpiece mounted on said flat spring and adapted to contact another contact piece, located inside the base, when the latter moves together with the flange with respect to the measuring spindle.
The base of the measuring apparatus may be made as a hollow cylinder mounted fast on two elastic annular diaphragms rigidly coupled with the casing of the measuring apparatus.
The measuring spindle is fastened on two elastic annular diaphragms rigidly connected to the base of the measuring apparatus.
The pusher may be made as a wedge with a taper of l:l000.
The application of the device according to the invention in grinding machines is instrumental in obtaining high-accuracy machining and in reducing auxiliary time.
The invention will now be described in connection with a specific and preferred embodiment thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, wherein: I

The device for compensating for the wear of the grinding wheel in a grinding machine comprises a measuring apparatus I and an actuating mechanism 2.
A casing 3 of the measuring apparatus 1 accommodates a base 6 mounted on two elastic annular diaphragms 4 and 5 rigidly coupled with said casing, said base being essentially a hollow cylinder. Located inside the base 6 is a measuring spindle 9 mounted on another two elastic annular diaphragms 7 and 8 rigidly coupled with said base, said measuring spindle being forced by a spring 10 against a flange ll of an output unit 12 adapted to determine the size of the workpiece being measured and to send a control signal to the actuating mechanism 2 to perform the compensating movement of the grinding wheel. The flange 11 is rigidly coupled with the base 6 and is mounted movably with respect to the measuring spindle 9. The output unit 12 comprises at least one flat spring 13 with one of its ends rigidly fixed, in position on the measuring probe 9 and with the other end, on the flange 11. In the device according to the invention the output unit 12 incorporates two flat springs 13 and 14, one of the ends of each of said springs being rigidly fixed on the measuring spindle 9, and the other, on the flange 11. The flat spring 13 carries an electric contact piece 15 adapted to contact another contact piece 16 located inside the base 6 on the flat spring 14, when the base 6 together with the flange 11 moves with respect to the measuring spindle 9. A bracket 17 is held in place on the casing 3, said bracket carrying two pairs of measuring bases 18 and 19 (only one pair of these being represented in the drawing) between which a machined workpiece 20 to be measured is placed.
The base 6 is operatively connected to a pusher 21 which is essentially a wedge with a taper of 111000 rigidly coupled with a piston rod 22 of a hydraulic power cylinder 23 and movable by the cylinder 23 along guideways 24. Rigidly coupled with the piston rod 22 of the hydraulic power cylinder 23 is a bracket 25 carrying an electric contact piece 26 slidable along electric contact pieces 27 when the pusher 21 is being moved.
The actuating mechanism 2 of the device comprises a screw pair 28 (Fig. 2) whose lead screw 29 is rigidlycoupled with a ratched wheel 30 which carries a lever 31 (Fig. l) with an electric contact piece 32, slidable along electric contact pieces 33, located inside a stationary base 34 when the ratchet wheel 30 is being moved. Each of the electric contact pieces 27 is electrically connected to the respective contact piece 33.
Rotation of the ratchet wheel 30 is imparted from a hydraulic power cylinder 35, its piston rod 36 being articulated to the lever 31 and carrying a pawl 37.
The device to compensate for the wear of the grinding wheel in'a grinding machine functions as follows.
The workpiece 20 that has been machined is transferred from the grinding station by means of a special appliance (not shown in the drawing), and is placed onto the two pairs of measuring bases 18 and 19 of the measuring apparatus 1 (Fig. l).
Concurrently, the pusher 21 is imparted motion from the hydraulic power cylinder 23 with the result that the electric contact piece 26 slides along the electric contact pieces 27.
While moving along the guideways 24 the pusher 21 moves the base 6 together with the measuring spindle 9 resiliently fixed therein, to move towards the work 20 being measured. The base 6 while moving imparts deformation to the the elastic annular diaphragms 4 and 5 rigidly coupled with the case 3. Once the measuring spindle 9 has touched the workpiece being measured, the base 6, while straining the elastic annular diaphragms 7 and 8 which are rigidly coupled therewith and whereon the measuring spindle 9 is fastened, moves with respect to the latter; the flange ll which is rigidly connected to the base 6, is moved eventually together therewith. The movement of the base 6 along with the flange 1 l with respect to the measuring spindle 9 results in straining the flat springs 13 and 14, thereby closing the electric contacts 15 and 16.
Once this has occurred, the pusher 21 stops moving, while the electric contact piece 26 contacts one of the electric contact pieces 27. The hydraulic power cylinder 3] turns the lever 31 and the ratchet wheel 30 coupled therewith.
The turning of the lever 31 causes the electric contact piece 32 to slide along the electric contact pieces 33. Rotated together with the arm 31 and with the ratchet wheel 30 is the lead screw 29 (Fig. 2) of the mechanical actuator 2 which causes a grinding wheel 38 to move. This movement is effected until the contact piece 32 (Fig. 1) contacts the electric contact pieces 33 which is connected to the contact pieces 27 closed at the moment with'the electric contact piece 26. Piece 32 upon contacting each particular electric contact piece 33 causes a relay 39 to operate to send a control signal to electromagnets 40 and 41 which in turn actuate valves 42 and 43 so as to reverse the hydraulic power cylinders 23 and and, as a result, to return the pusher 21 and the lever 31 to the ini tial position.
The relay 39, as well as the electromagnets and 41 are power supplied from the power source 44.
It should be understood that the foregoing disclosure considered in the above description and shown in the appended drawings, relates to only a preferred embodiment of the invention and that various changes and modifications in design, shape, size and arrangement of the elements and components may be made; thus the above-described elements and components shown in the drawings may be replaced with equivalent ones, the position of some elements and components may be altered unless all these changes and alterations depart from the spirit and scope of the invention set forth in the appended claims.
What we claim is:
l. A device for compensating for the wear of a grinding wheel in a grinding machine for machining work, said device comprising: an actuating mechanism adapted to effect movement of the grinding wheel to compensate for wear of the latter in conformity with the results of measurement of the work being machined; and a measuring apparatus including a casing and adapted to act upon said actuating mechanism; said measuring apparatus comprising a base resiliently fixed in the casing of said measuring apparatus; a measuring spindle resiliently fixed in said base; a pusher operatively coupled with said base to move the latter towards the work being measured; and an output unit adapted to fix the size of the work being measured once the latter contacts said measuring spindle as a result of motion of said base with respect to said measuring spindle, and to send a control signal to said actuating mechanism to effect the compensating movement of the grinding wheel.
2. A device for compensating for the wear of grinding wheel as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the output unit comprises at least one flat spring which is rigidly fastened on the measuring spindle with one of its ends, while with the other end is secured to a flange rigidly coupled with the base and movably mounted with respect to the measuring spindle; said flat spring carrying an electric contact piece adapted to contact another contact piece located inside said base when the latter moves together with said flange with respect to the measuring spindle.
3. A device for compensating for the wear of the grinding wheel as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base of the measuring apparatus is constituted by a hollow cylindrical structure mounted on two elastic annular diaphragms rigidly connected to the casing of the measuring apparatus. I
4. A device for compensating for the wear of the grinding wheel as claimed in claim 2, wherein the base of the measuring apparatus is constituted by a hollow cylindrical structure mounted on two elastic annular diaphragms rigidly connected to the casing of the measuring apparatus.
5. A device for compensating for the wear of the grinding wheel as claimed in claim 1, wherein the measuring spindle is mounted on two elastic annular diaphragms rigidly connected to the base of the measuring apparatus.
6. A device for compensating for the wear of the grinding wheel as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pusher constituted by a wedge with a taper of l l 000.

Claims (6)

1. A device for compensating for the wear of a grinding wheel in a grinding machine for machining work, said device comprising: an actuating mechanism adapted to effect movement of the grinding wheel to compensate for wear of the latter in conformity with the results of measurement of the work being machined; and a measuring apparatus including a casing and adapted to act upon said actuating mechanism; said measuring apparatus comprising a base resiliently fixed in the casing of said measuring apparatus; a measuring spindle resiliently fixed in said base; a pusher operatively coupled with said base to move the latter towards the work being measured; and an output unit adapted to fix the size of the work being measured once the latter contacts said measuring spindle as a result of motion of said base with respect to said measuring spindle, and to send a control signal to said actuating mechanism to effect the compensating movement of the grinding wheel.

A device for compensating for the wear of grinding wheel as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the output unit comprises at least one flat spring which is rigidly fastened on the measuring spindle with one of its ends, while with the other end is secured to a flange rigidly coupled with the base and movably mounted with respect to the measuring spindle; said flat spring carrying an electric contact piece adapted to contact another contact piece located inside said base when the latter moves together with said flange with respect to the measuring spindle.
3. A device for compensating for the wear of the grinding wheel as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base of the measuring apparatus is constituted by a hollow cylindrical structure mounted on two elastic annular diaphragms rigidly connected to the casing of the measuring apparatus.
4. A device for compensating for the wear of the grinding wheel as claimed in claim 2, wherein the base of the measuring apparatus is constituted by a hollow cylindrical structure mounted on two elastic annular diaphragms rigidly connected to the casing of the measuring apparatus.
5. A device for compensating for the wear of the grinding wheel as claimed in claim 1, wherein the measuring spindle is mounted on two elastic annular diaphragms rigidly connected to the base of the measuring apparatus.
6. A device for compensating for the wear of the grinding wheel as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pusher constituted by a wedge with a taper of 1:1000.
