STATION-INDICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,121, dated March 8, 1887.
Application filed April 15, 1886. Serial No. 199025.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GERRIT HENRY BADE, of Austin, Lander county, State of Nevada, have invented an Improvement in Station-Indicators; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to the class of indicators the object of which is to inform the passengers in railway-trains or in other vehicles, such as the cars of street-railways, of the approach of the train or car to a station or street, and its name as well as the names successively of all the stations or streets which the train or car has to pass.
My invention consists of a disk resembling a dial placed within the car, and provided with the names of the stations or streets successively, a hand playing over a dial, a gong located on the frame-work supporting the,
disk, a hammer for striking the gong, power mechanism for operating the hand and hammer and provided with an escapement mechanism, oscillating crank-shafts mounted in the car and connected with the escapement mechanism, and standards with arms located beside the roadway at proper distances on each side of the stations or streets, and with which the crank-shafts on the cars engage, whereby the indicator is operated, all of which I shall hereinafter fully describe by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is an elevation of my stationindicator.
A is a car.
B is a disk or dial located at some point in the car where it can be conveniently seen by the occupants. It has printed or otherwise formed upon its face, in annular series, the names of the stations or streets which the car hassuccessively to pass, and it may be made of any suitable material and removable, so that it can be changed when necessary.
0 is ahand which plays over the face of the dial and indicates the various names thereon.
D is a gong.
E is the frame-work of the power mechanism, said mechanism consisting of any suitable arrangement of gearing by which power is transmitted from the spring F to the arbor G, on which the hand 0 is mounted. This gearing Ihave here shown as a large power'gear,

H, meshing with pinion 71 which drives gear h, which meshes with pinion i, which drives gear I, which meshes with the gear 9 on the arbor G.
The gears J J and pinionsjj operate the shaft or spindle K, on which the hammer L is mounted. The escapement mechanism consists of a ratchet-wheel, M, on the main driving-shaft, controlled by the gravitating pawl m. By raising this pawl the power of the spring F is transmitted to the hand 0 and the hammer L until the pawl drops into a fresh notch, when the power is arrested. This escapement is controlled by the following mechanism: Passed through the car is a shaft, N, on the inner end of which is secured a crank arm, a, from which a cord, a, passes to the gravitating pawl m, to which it. is secured. The outer end of the shaft has a vertical crank-arm, 0, controlled by springs 0. Beside the road'bed, at a suitable distance from the station, is ast-andard, 1?, having a horizontal cross-arm, p, on its top, extending over the road-bed partially, and high enough to allow the car to pass under it. \Vith this arm the vertical crankarm O ofthe shaft N comes in contact. The hammer is seen red to the spindle or shaft K by a swiveled connection, such as is shown, whereby, though carried around with the shaft, it may pass the hell or gong, after striking it, without interference.
The operation of my station-indicator is as follows: The car approaching the station, the crank-arm 0 comes in contact with the horizontal arm 1) of the standard 1. By this it is momentarily thrown back, whereby it oscillates the shaft N, on which it is secured, and oscillates the inner crank-arm n of said shaft, and this crank-arm, through the cord a, raises the gravity-pawl m of the escapement 1nechanism and allows the power to be transmitted to the hand 0 and to the hammer-carrying spindle K. The latter throws its hammer L forward, so that it strikes the gong D to warn the passengers of the approach to the station. The hand C is at the same time carried around on the disk to the name of the station, opposite which it stops, as the power mechanism is arrested by the fall of the pawl to its engage ment with the ratchet of the escapement mechanism.
The device is regulated at the beginning of a trip, and thereafter continues in regular operation.
If the stations by which the car passes are toofnumerous to have their names printed upon a single dial, there may be several dials,which can be placed in position at the proper time. In order to provide for the return of the train, there should be a shaft similar to N on the other side of the car, provided with crankarms, as described, and connected with the gravity-pawl of the escapement mechanism, which connection may be simply made by moving the cord from one crank-arm to the other on the opposite side.
Havingthus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a station-indicator, the dial-plate 13, within the car and provided with the names successively of the stations or streets, the hand C, playing over said dial, and power mechanism for driving the hand and provided with an escapement, in combination with the means by which the movement of the hand is effected and controlled, consisting of the oscillating shaft N, having an inner crank-arm, n, and connection a between the arm and the escapement of the power mechanism, a crankarm, 0, on the outer end of said shaft, and a fixed arnnp, by the roadside, with which said crank-arm O is arranged to come in contact, substantially as herein described.
2. In a statioirindicator, the dial-plate B, the hand 0, the gong D, the hammer L, and power-gearing by which the hammer is operated, in combination with the oscillating shaft N, provided with a crank-arm, a, on its inner end, an escapement mechanism for the powergearing, and a connection between the crankarm n and the cscapementmechanism,acrankarm, 0, on the outer end of the shaft, and a fixed arm, 12, by the roadside, with which the crank-arm O is arranged to come in contact, whereby the escapement mechanism is released and the hammer operated to strike the gong, substantially as herein described.
3. In a station-indicator, the dial B, provided with the names successively of the sta tions or streets, the hand 0, moving over the face ofsaid dial, the gong I), and the hammer L, adapted to strike the gong, and power mechanism for operating the hand and the harm mer, in combination with the oscillating shaft N, provided with a cral'ik-arm, a, on itsinner end, an escapement for the power mechanism, and connection a between said escapement and crank arm a, the crankarm O on the outer end of the shaft, and the fixed arm 1) by the roadway, with which the crank-arm O is arranged to come in contact, substantially as herein described.
4. In a station-indicator, the dial B, provided with the names successively of the sta tions or streets, the hand 0, playing over the dial, and the power mechanism consisting of the spring F, the arbor G, on which the hand is mounted, and gears and pinions, as described, for transmitting the power of the spring to the arbor, in combination with the oscillating shaft N, the crank-arm a on its inner end, the ratchet wheel M and gravitating pawl m of the escapement mechanism, the cord n, connecting the gravitating pawl. with the cranlcarm. a, the crank-arm O on the outer end of the shaft, and controlling-springs 0, and the fixed arm 1) by the roadway, with which the crank-arm O is arranged to come in contact, substantially as herein described.
5. In a station-indicator, the dial-plate B, the hand 0, the gong D, the hammer L, and the power mechanism consisting of the spring F, the shaft or spindle K, on which the hammer is mounted, and gears and pinions, as described, by which the power of the spring is transmitted to the shaft K, in combination with the oscillating shaft N, the crank-arm non its inner end, the ratchet-wheel M and gravitating pawl m of the escapement mechanism, the cord a, connecting said gravitating pawl with the crank-arm a, the crank-arm O on the outer end of the shaft, and controllingsprings 0, and the fixed arm 1) by the roadway, with which said crank-arm is arranged to come in contact, substantially as herein described.
6. A station-indicator comprising the dial B, having the names of the stations or streets successively on its face, the hand 0, playing over the face of said dial, the gong D, and the hammer L for striking the gong, the power mechanism consisting of the spring F, the gears and pinions, as described, and arbor G for driving the'hand, the gears and pinions, as described, and the shaft or spindle K for op erating the hammer, in combination with the oscillating shaft N, the crank-arm a on its inner end, the ratchet-wheel M and the gravi tating pawl m of the escapement mechanism, the cord a, connecting the crank-arm a with said pawl, the spring-controlled crank-arm O on the outer end of the shaft N, and the fixed arm 1) by the roadway, with which the crankarm 0 is arranged to come in contact, substantially as herein described.
