PLUG-lIN-TYPE SWITCHGEAR BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention Switchgear of the type comprising an insulating support means and a circuit interrupter removably supported on the support means with plug-type terminals of the circuit interrupter in pIug-in-type engagement with plug-in-type terminals of the support means.
2. Description of the Prior Art It is old in the switchgear art to provide insulating support means with terminal conductors on the insulating support means; a circuit interrupter having plug-type terminals thereon; and spring-biased connectors, such as tulip-type spring-biased connectors, connected to the terminal conductors of the support means and cooperable with the plug-type terminals of the circuit interrupter for providing plug-in mounting of the circuit interrupter on the support means. The present invention is an improvement over the prior art in that there is provided by this invention improved means for providing contact pressure between the support terminals and the circuit interrupter terminals. More particularly there is pro vided by this invention improved means for providing bolted pressure between the support plug-in-type terminals and the circuit interrupter plug-type terminals. Moreover, the same bolts that are utilized to secure the circuit interrupter to the support block serve to provide the bolted pressure between the support plug-in-type terminals and the interrupter plugtype terminals.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Improved switchgear comprises plug'in support means and a plug-in circuit interrupter removably supported on the support means. The plug-in support means comprises a pair of insulating support blocks for supporting the opposite ends of the circuit interrupter. Each of the support blocks supports a plurality of plug-in-type terminals that extend across the support block in a spaced relationship. Each of the plug-in-type terminals comprises a pair of spaced-bar conductors supported on the support block in a spaced relationship for receiving a plug type breaker terminal therebetween. A multipole plugin-type circuit interrupter is supported on the support blocks with the plug-type terminals of the interrupter in plug-in-type engagement with the plug-in-type terminals of the support means. On each of the support blocks there is a separate wedge-type terminal pressure means between each pair of adjacent plug-in-type terminals. Each of the wedge-type terminal pressure means is a toggle structure comprising a pair of insulating members supported in toggle-type engagement. An actuating bar, having a tapped opening therein, is supported under the knee pivot of the insulating toggle. When a bolt member is threaded into the actuating bar and rotated to draw the actuating bar frontward, the actuating bar operates on the knee pivot of the insulating toggle to erect the toggle during which movement the insulating toggle members force the adjacent conducting bars apart to thereby provide bolted contact pressure between the terminals of the support means and the terminals of the circuit interrupter. The bolts that are utilized to secure the circuit interrupter to the support blocks are the same bolts that actuate the insulating togglesto provide bolted contact pressure between the plug-in-type terminals of the support means and the plug-type terminals of the circuit interrupter.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to the drawings, there is shown, in FIGS. 1-3, plug-in-type switchgear 5 comprising plug-in-type support means 7 and a plug-in-type circuit interrupter 9. The plug-intype support means 7 comprises a pair of plug-in-type supports 11. EAch of the plug-in supports 11 (FIGS. 4 and 5) comprises a molded insulating support block 13 and threepole-unit pIug-in-type terminals 15 supported on the support block 13 in a spaced relationship across the support block 13. Each of the pole-unit plug-in-type terminals 15 comprises a pair of flat faced conducting bars 17 fixedly secured to the support block 13 in a spaced parallel relationship by means of pair of bolt structures 19. As can be seen in FIG. 5, the insulating support block 13 comprises a generally planar front 21 and the block 13 is formed with three cavities 23 open at the front for receiving plug-type terminals in a manner to be hereinafter described. Each pair of bar conductors 17 extends frontward into the cavities 23 (FIG. 5), and backward out past the bottom of the associated support block 11 (FIGS. 2 and 3).
A separate terminal pressure means 27 (FIGS. 4 and 5) is supported on the support block 13 between each of the outer pole-unit terminals 15 and the center pole-unit terminal 15. Each of the terminal pressure means 27 comprises a pair of rigid molded insulating toggle members 29, 31 and a rigid metallic actuating bar 33, which parts are supported on the support block 13 by means of a pair of screws 35 and coil springs 37. As can be understood with reference to FIGS. 5- 7, the insulating toggle members 29, 31 are separate members. During assembly of the support means 11, the two insulating toggle members 29, 31 are placed together as shown in FIG. 5 and the actuating bar 33 is placed in a pocket 39 between the toggle members 29, 31. The parts 29, 31, 33 are then moved up into the position shown in FIG. 5, and the two screws 35, with the coil springs 37 supported thereon, are passed up through two openings 41 (FIG 7) in the actuating bar 33 and through openings between the numbers 29, 31 where the screws are threaded into tapped inserts 43 (FIG. 5) captured in the insulating block 13. With the screws threaded in the position shown on the right in FIG. 5 (the section line VV in FIG. 4 jogs down through the one screw 35), the coil springs 37, biasing against the actuating bar 33, bias the actuating bar 33 and toggle members 29, 31 upward against the mounting block 13 to thereby support the terminal pressure means 27 on the support block 13 in the position seen in FIG. 5. As can be seen in broken lines in FIG. 5, a leg portion 45 of the toggle member 20 comprises a pivot surface means 47 (FIGS. 5 and 7) that engages similar pivot surface means 47 of a leg portion ductors 5 7, 59, that extend toward opposite ends of the pole unit. The circuit interrupter 9 comprises an operating mechanism and trip device of the general type shown, for example, in the patent to Stephenson Jr. ct al. U.S. Pat. No. 3, 21 l, 860 issued Oct. I2, 1965. The operating mechanism and trip device are operable to simultaneously operate the con tacts 55 of the three-pole units in a well known manncr. As is best seen in FIGS. 2 and 6, a separate plug-type terminal 61 is secured to each of the conductors 57, 59 if the three-pole units of the circuit interrupter 9 by means of a nut '53 that is threaded onto a threaded bolt portion 65 of the associated plug-type terminal 61 after the bolt portion 65 has been passed up through an opening in the associated conductor 57 or 59. As can be understood with reference to FIGS. 2, 3 and 6, each of the plug-type terminals 61 comprises opposite parallel generally flat faces for cooperation with the internal flat faces of the spaced bar conductors of the associated plugin type terminal 15 on the support 13.
As can be understood with reference to FIG. 1, there are four openings through the insulating housing 51 of the circuit interrupter 9 for receiving four mounting bolts 71 that are utilized to secure the circuit interrupter 9 to the support means 7 and to operate the terminal pressure means 27 for providing contact pressure between the plug-in-type terminals 15 of the support means 7 and the plug-type terminals 61 of the circuit interrupter 9.
At a switchboard or panelboard installation the two support blocks 13 are supported on a panel (such as a panel 76 indicated by broken lines in FIG. 3) by means of a plurality of bolts that extends through openings 75 (FIGS. 1 and 4-6) in the support blocks 13. A pair of holes 77 (FIGS. 2) are provided at the bottom end of each of the bar conductors 17. At the switchboard or panelboard installation, a bus bar is positioned between the lower ends of each pair of bar conductors l7 and fixedly secured to the associated pair of bar conductors 17 by means of a pair of bolts that extend through the openings 77 and through openings in the bus bar. Thus, the circuit interrupter 9 can be plugged onto the support means 7 to control the circuits through the bus bars at the installation.
The circuit interrupter 9 is shown in the disconnected position in FIGS. 2 and 3 with the plug-in support means 11 shown in the disconnected unactuated position in FIG. 5. When it is desired to mount the circuit interrupter 9 on the support means 11, the circuit interrupter 9 is moved down onto the front surfaces 21 (FIG. )-of the support blocks 13 during which movement the plug-type terminals 61 of the circuit in' terruptcr 9 move into plug-in-type engagement with the plugin-type terminals 15 of the support means 7. Thereafter, the four mounting bolts 71 (FIG. 1) are passed down through the four openings in the insulating housing 51 of the circuit interrupter 9, and each of the bolts is threaded into a tapped opening 79 (FIG. 7) in the associated actuating bar 33. As can be seen in FIG. 5, the insulating toggle members 29, 31 are in the underset position. With the circuit interrupter 9 on the support means 7, the bolts 71 are tightened drawing the actuating bars 33 frontward to thereby operate the insulating toggles 29, 31 from the unactuated undcrset position seen in FIG. 5 to the actuated erected position seen in FIG. 6. As was hereinbefore set forth, the leg portion 45 of the insulating toggle member 29 engages the leg portion 419 of the insulating toggle member 31 at the pivot surfaces 47 (FIGS. 5 and 7). Thus, these leg portions 45, 49 engage at what can be termed a knee pivot 17 of the toggle members. As each actuating bar 33 is drawn up ward, the leg portions 45, 49, engaging at the knee pivot 47, are pivoted to the erected position during which movement the surfaces 81 of the members 29, 31 are forced apart to thereby force the associated bar conductors 17 apart. As can be seen in FIGS. 5 and 6, the outer bar conductors 17 of the two outer pole units engage flat surfaces 83 of the insulating block 13 so that these outer bar conductors 17 cannot move outward. Thus, it can be understood that as the toggle members 29, 31 are operated .to the erected position shown in FIG. 6 the bar conductors 17 flex and exert contact pressure on the flat sides or faces of the plug-type stab conductors 61. Thus, bolted contact pressure is applied to the plug-in contacts of the switchgear. A separate spring washer 84 is positioned under the head of each bolt 71 to maintain pressure during expansion and contraction of parts. The bolts 71 serve to fixedly secure the circuit interrupter 9 on the support means 7 and to provide bolted contact pressure between the plug-in-typc terminals 15 of the support means 7 and the plug-type terminals 61 of the circuit interrupter 9. When it is desired to remove the circuit interrupter 9, the bolts 71 are operated to force the actuating bars 33 from the position seen in FIG. 6 to the position seen in FIG. 5 during which movement the toggle members 29, 31 are operated from the actuated pressure exerting erected position seen in FIG. 6 to the unactuated undersct loosened position seen in FIG. 5. As can be seen in FIG. 6, the bar conductors 17 flex sufficiently to provide contact pressure under the force of the toggle members 29, 31 which are operated by the bolts 71 so that bolted pressure is applied to the plug-in-type terminals by means of the mounting bolts 71 of the switchgear.
Two additional top openings 87 and 89 (FIG. 7) are provided in the bar 33 for receiving mounting bolts of other styles of circuit intcrrupters that have differently spaced openings therein for receiving the mounting bolts 71.
