JAMES E. EMERSON, or BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,'772, dated March l, 1887. Application filed December 14, `1886. Serial No. 221,544. (No model.)
Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of` Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saws 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
, exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the construction of saws, and has for its object an improvement in the means for supporting and securing a detachable cutting-section in a blank or back, and is adapted to crosscut, one-man crosscut, drag, gang, and other saws.
The invention will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed 'out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which forni a part of this specification, Figure l represents a side View of a cutting-section; Fig. 2, like view of a blank or back to which the cuttingsection is detachably secured. Fig. 3 represents a crosscut-saw with a cutting-section attached thereto. Fig. l is a section on the line x a: in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 represents a cuttingsection with another form ot' teeth.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters marked thereon, A. represents a eutting-section of a saw, which is provided with a central aperture, a, and elongated slots b b near its ends for allowing for expansion and contraction of the cutting-Section or the blank or back to which it is secured. The cuttingsection is tapered from or near the roots or bases of the teeth to the back edge, where it is reduced to near or about a knife-edge, as shown at c in Fig. 4t. The teeth on the cutting-section maybe of the ordinary form shown in Fig. I, or they maybe of any other preferred form-for example, such as are shown in Fig. 5.
B represents the blank or back of the saw, which is provided with a series of teeth or holders, d, each tooth being reduced on one side alternately to or near a knife-edge, from or near the root of the tooth outward, as shown in Fig. 4. From the face of the reduced teeth at the ends oi' the blank or back, and one or more intermediate teeth, project short studs or pins e, which engage with the apertures in the cutting-section and securely lock it in working position. To the ends of the blank or back are attached the usual handles, f.
To attach the cutting-section A to the blank B, the former is set down between the teeth d in the latter, with the aperture a engaging with the pin c in the tooth near the center of the length of the blank. The ends of the sec-- tion are then sprung out sufliciently to allow the slots b b to pass over the pins ein the teeth at the ends of the blank B, when the two will be rmly and securely locked together.
It will be observed that at each end of the blank B is a tooth, g, which is not reduced in thickness, and covers the end of the cuttingsecticn A from the root of the last tooth, thus protecting the section against any displacement by being struck on the ends, and that by Itapering the teeth ofthe blank on opposite sides a groove is formed, in which the cuttingsection is embedded and supported laterally throughout its entire length.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A detachable sawsection reduced in thickness at its rear edge and provided with elongated slots near its ends and one or more apertures intermediate of the ends, substantially as described.
2. A saw blank or back provided with teeth or projections on one edge, the teeth being reduced in thickness onl opposite sides alternately, whereby the teeth are adapted to engage on opposite sides of a saw-Section, and a suitable number of the teeth provided with a locking device, substantially as described.
3. A detachable saw-section, in combination with a saw blank orback having teeth or projections on one edge, reduced in thickness on opposite sides alternately, whereby a groove is formed to receive said section and the teeth of the blank engage ou opposite sides thereof,
and Suitable means for detachably securing the IOC)
