SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,727, dated March 1, 1.887.

, To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that l, CANOVA Trr'us CAGLE, of Beersheba Springs, in the county of Grundy and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in SpootHolders, of

which the following is a specification.

My invention consists in aholder for spools or balls of thread, twine, flax, worsted, yarn, or silk, which may be adjusted to support IO spools or balls of any size, and which is provided with means for securing it to the front of the dress-body of the person using it, and which is further provided with a strip or cushion for holding pins, all as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the several parts by letter, A represents the base of my improved spool- .25 holder, which is cut out of light metal in any ornamental or desirable form,-having formed integral with it at one end an outwardly-extending arm, B, the outer end of which has the stud B, which forms a pivotal bearing for one end of the spool. Toward the other end of the base-plate A are struck up from the base it self the two parallel rows of inclined teeth 0, beneath which slide the side edges of the ad justable slide D, which carries the arm E, hav- 3 ing at its upper end the stud E, which forms the pivotal bearing for the other end of the spool. The slide D has formed in its edges, on the upper side thereof, the depressions D, in which the ends of two of the teeth 0 rest,

thus securing the slide in the positionin which it may be adjusted.

It will be seen that the adj i'istable arm E may be moved to enable the holder to receive and hold in operative position any length of spool or ball. The back of the base-piece has secured to it a pin, G, which is hooked into the front of the dress-body of the person using it, the spool or ball being thus always held in place, preventing it from falling on the floor or getting lost when the person moves or arises. The holder can thus be used in sewing, embroidering, knitting, quilting, crocheting, and all fancy work where thread, twine, cord, silk, worsted, yarn, &c.., are used.

To the base A is secured in a eonvenientposition a small cushion, as H, in which pins may be carried, being thus always convenientl y in reach when required. The studs which form pivotal bearings for the ends of the spool or ball are made round in crossseotion to cause the spool to turn smoothly and freely on them.

To place the spool or ball in position, the movable arm E is slid out until the spool can be placed between the arms, with the stud of the fixed arm in one of its ends, when the arm E is moved back until its stud enters that end of the spool a sufficient distance, when the adjustable arm is held in position by the ends of two of the teeth O resting in the depressions D of its slide D, as described.

From the foregoing description, taken in con nection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. 5

My invention is simple, cheap, and strong in construction and very convenient and efficient in use. It is also preferred to provide a thimble support, I. In the construction shown this support is formed of a wire attached at one end to the plate or base A, bent into hook form, and having at its outer end sufficient spring or tension to clampa thimble when placed thereon, as shown.

Having thus described myinventiomwhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
