No. 358,616. Patented Mar. '1, 1887.

CHARLES S. F. KIRKEBY, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO LOUIS WV. UNHOLTZ, OF NFNV YORK, N. Y.
CABINET-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,616, dated March I, 1887.
Application filed November 8, 1886. Serial No. 218,229. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, CHARLES S. F. KIRKEBY, of Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinet- Ohairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved cabinet-chair which combines the'advantages of a comfortable arm-chair with those of an invalidchair, so as to be specially useful in sickrooms; and the invention consists of a chair the back and seat portions of which are rigidly connected at the meeting edges and I 5 pivoted to the rear part of the chair-frame, so as to be capable of being tilted in b'ackward direction until stopped by side recesses of the back. The supporting-frame is provided below the seat with an opening and a sliding 2o drawer containing a fiat pan or urinal, which is ready for use when the combined seat and back is tilted and the seat placed in an up right position. XVhen the seat is returned to its normal position on the supporting-frame, it is retained thereon by suitable locking devices, which are released when the combined back and seat are to be tilted.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved cab- 0 inet-chair. Fig. 2 isa vertical transverse sec tion of the same on line 00 m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 isavertieal longitudinal section of the chair, showing the combined back and seat tilted back, so as to permit the use of the chair as a cabinet.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the supporting-frame of myimproved cabinet-chair, which frame is preferably provided with arms A. The seat B and back 0 are rigidly united at theirmeeting edges, so as to form one combined body,-which is pivoted to lugs a a of the supporting-frame A, so as to be tilted from the normal position (shown in Fig. 1) into a backwardly-thrown position, (shown in Fig. 3,) in which position the seat assumes nearly an upright position, so that it can be used as a back for the party sit-ting 011 the supportingframe A. The back 0 has side recesses, a, 0 at the lower part, which fit around the lugs act and serve as stops for the combined back and seat when they are tiltedin a backward direction.
The supporting-frame A is provided with an 5 opening, b, below the seat B, and below said opening with a flat pan or urinal, D, which is located in a drawer, D, that can be drawn out at the rear part of the frame A, for the purpose of removing the urinal. Spring-catches or other locking devices, d, are applied to the seat B or back 0, and serve to engage recesses of the supporting-frame A or arms A, so as to lock the back andseatto thesupporting-frame A when the former are in a normal position in the frame A, as shown in Fig. 1.
Any other suitable locking device may be used, as I do not confine myself to the special kind shown.
My improved cabinet-chair has the advan- 7o tage of being used as a comfortable armchair for the sittingroom, and also as an invalidchair in bedrooms. When used as thelatter,
a suitable disinfectant is. stored away in the sliding drawer D to remove any obnoxious smells. The chair can be adjusted for use with great facility, and is specially adapted for hospitals and sick-rooms generally.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a supporting-frame having an opening below the seat, a pan or urinal below said opening, and a combined seat and back, which are rigidly united at their meeting edges and pivoted to the rear part of ghet1 supportingframe, substantially as set 2. The combination of a supporting-frame provided with an opening below the seat, a sliding drawer having a pan or urinal below said opening, a combined seat and back, which are united rigidly at their meeting edges and pivoted to the rear part of the supportingframe, and a locking device by which the com bined seat and back can be locked to or released from the supportingframe, substan- L tially as set forth.
3. The combination of a supportingframe provided with an opening below the seat and In testimony that I claim the foregoing as fixed rear lugs, a pan or urinal below said my invention I have signed my name in presopening, and a combined seat and back, which ence of two subscribing witnesses.
are rigidly united at their meeting edges, said CHARLES S. F. KIRKEBY. 5 back being pivoted to said lugs and provided Witnesses:
with side recesses acting as stops, substantially PAUL GoEPEL,
as set forth. MARTIN PETRY.-
