Be it known that we, JOHN HEATH and WILLrAM Fnosr, both of Bnrslem, in the county of Stafford, England,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blasting and Shot-Firing in Mines, and. in appliances relating thereto, (for which we have obtained patents in Great Britain, 5,222, dated April 14, 1886; in France, No. 176,729,
dated June 12, 1886, and in Belgium, No. 7 3,490, dated June 15, 1886;) and we do hereby declare that the following is a flill, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled jg the art to which 5 pertains miners and use the same.
The present invention relates to that class of cartridges for blasting or mining purposes in which the explosive charge is surrounded by a flame-extinguishing medium, so as to 2Q avoid igniting gases or fire-damp. It has been proposed to construct a blasting-cartridge of an outer shell or casing which contains the explosive charge completely surrounded by water.
My invention is designed to obviate certain objections possessed by such water packed cartridges; and it consists in making the outer shell of the cartridge of some pliable or flexible material, and placing therein a filling of 0 a jelly-like consistency, in which the explosive charge is embedded. The jelly-like filling contains a snflicicnt amount of Water in a state of absorption, so that it will serve the purpose of a flanieextingnishing medium 5 when the explosive charge is fired; The ob ject of using a jelly-1ike packing or filling is to guard against the liability of the water leaking out, and to give such a consistency to the flame extinguishing medium that it can be more easily handled. Furthermore, such jelly-like filling serves to hold the explosive charge roperly centered or in such position within he outer shell or envelope that it will always be surrounded on all sides by thefiame- The accompanying drawing shows in longitudinal section a blasting-cartridge constructed according to our invention.
The reference-numeral 1 designates an outer envelope or shell, which is made of strong paper, cloth, or a combination of both, mackintosh, oiled paper, or any suitable waterproof, pliable, or flexible material. The object of making the envelope of some flexible material isto allow it to adapt itself to the irregularities of the blast-hole. The said envelope or shell contains an explosive charge, 2, of gelatine, dynamite, cotton -powd'er,f01 strongexplosive. W'ith'explosives that can be placed in water without impair- 6o .ing their efficiency no. covering is required; but other charges affected by water or moisture are surrounded by a wrapping or covering, 3, of some water-proof material. A detcnating or fulminating cap, 4, isinsertedinto the end of the explosive charge, and a safety fuse, 5, extends from said detonator and goes through the contracted or gathered mouth of the envelope 1.
It will be understood that the material of the envelope or shell 1 is gathered around the fuse, and is tied by means of a string, 6, so as to close the mouth of the envelope and hold the fuse in place.
The envelope or shell 1 is filled with, a fiame-extinguishing medium, 7, which consists of soap, starch, glue, and water. These ingredients are admixed in such proportions as to form a jelly-like mass, in which the water is held in a st'ate of absorption. The 8o massis of such consistency or stiffness that the explosive chargc will be held therein in a properly-centered position, so as to be surrounded on all sides by the gelatinous or jellylike mass. It will be understood that the latter is not liable to spill or leak out, and that it is less liable to percolate through the pores of the outer shell or envelope than water.
