BOTTLE-FILLING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 358,575, dated March 1, 1887.
Application filed March 17, 1886. Serial No. 155,554.

In the use of a bottle-filling machine with my improvement the quantity of air expelled from the bottles while filling passes through the filling-machine and over into the casks,- the process of filling the bottles proceeds in a better and more uniform way than in filling- Inaehines of hitherto known construction, and for drawing beer from casks into bottles my improvement is of especial value, as it causes less scumming of the liquid.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing abottling-machine constructed according to my invention, in connection with a cask from which the liquid is to be drawn off into bottles. Fig. 2 is atransversevertical section of the machine, taken directly through one of the fillingtubcs. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the air-tight liquid-receiver and attached parts,taken in the center of the machine between the bottlingtubes. Fig. at is a transverse section, on a larger scale than Figs. 2 and 3, of one of the bottling tubes and its immediate appurtenances.

A designates a receiving-vessel, which is provided with a cover, A, by which it can be closed hermetically, andis supported on standards. This vessel is furnished with a flexible hose, h, and coupling-tube 0, by which it can be put in connection with the tap in of a cask, R. The inner mouth of the coupling-tube eis capable of being closed byavalve, o,connected with a float,s. Prior to the commencement of the filling operation this float occupies alower position than shown in the drawings, and valve 11 is then open.

In the lower part of the front of the vessel A are a number of openings corresponding with the number of bottles which are to be filled at a time by the machine, and into each of these openings is screwed (as best shown in Fig. 4) a metal socket, O, which has a central bore to receive within it a metal cylinder, (1*, which "forms the head or upper part of the filling-tube d, and which is fitted to slide freely within the said bore. On the upper part of this eylinderortubehead(1*, above the socket 0, there is a flange, i, and below this flange there arelatcral openings a. Below the socket 0 there is screwed on the said socket a nut, f, between which and the bottom of the said socket is a spiral spring, which exerts a tendency to push down the said cylinder as far as permitted by the flange 6, and so cause the openings n. to be tightly closedwithin the bore of the socket, as shown in Fig. 4, and so prevent any liquid from passing from the vessel A to the filling-tube d, the cylinder or fillingtube head (1* thus constituting a valve to the said tube, and the socket O forming the seat of the said valve.
Below the nut f there is placed on the fillingtube an india-rubber ring or gasket, 0, of a shape to fit and hermetically close the mouth of the bottle to be filled. The exit-opening d of the filling-tube is on one side near the end thereof, and in the lower end of the said tube is secured the open lower end of the smaller tube 9, which constitutes the vent-tube, and which is long enough for its open upper end to be always above the surface of the liquid in the vessel A.
\Nhen for filling a bottle the neck of the latter is put over one of the filling-tubes with its mouth against the ring 0 and the bottle then pushed upward, the fillingtube rises and brings its valve-opening i above the socket'n,
as shown in Fig. 2, and so permits the liquid to run from the vessel A through the tube into the bottle. The air expelled from the bottle by the entering liquid passes through the venttube 9 above the liquid level m into the vessel A, and thence through coupling-tube k and hose it into cask B.
As the liquid is drawn off from vesselA the floats descends and valvevopens to allow new liquid to pass from caskR into vessel A; but as the liquid enters the vessel the float will rise and would close the valve in time to prevent any liquid from closing the upper ends of the vent-tube. The level of the liquid is thus maintained nearly constant in the vessel A.
The bottles may be lifted and held up to the rings 0 by hand,orbyn1eans of lever'likesupports turning on bolts and springs 2, as will be understood with reference to the drawings.
It will be observed that the fillingtube d and its head (1* form apassage continuous from the valve at the inner end of the head to the outer end of the tube, and saidtube and head may move or slide as one piece. The springt, which is applied around the exterior of the fillingtube d, acts therefore directly to close the valve, and the pressure within the vessel, which may be variable, is not depended on for that purpose. The vent-tube g is fixed relatively to and movable with the filling-tube d, and su eh Vent-tube extends directly through and beyond the valve, being tight-1y fitted in the valve.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
1. The combination ,with an air-tight recciv-.
ing-vessel provided with a liquid-inlet pipe and a float and valve for closing said pipe, and also provided with an air-outlet pipe and an opening for a bottle-filling tube, of a valve-seat at the inner end of said opening, afilling-tube sliding in said opening, constructed at the outer end to receive a bottle, and having a valve at the inner end for closing on said seat, the said filling-tube affording a continuous passagefrom the valve to its outer end, and having an internal vent-tube movable With it and prolonged through the valve and Within the vessel, and a spring applied around the exterior of the filling-tube for depressing said tube to close the valve, substantially as herein described.
2. The combination, with the air-tight vessel A, having an opening in its lower part, of a socket, O, inserted from the outside into said opening, and having a valve-seat formed upon its inner end, the filling-tube (I, having a cylindrie head, (2*, sliding in said socket, and forming a continuous passage from the inner end of the head to the outer end of the tube, a flange, t, on said head, and lateral openings it below said flange, said flange and openings constitutinga valve, the vent-tube g, fixed to and movable with the filling-tube, and prolonged'through the valve and Within the vessel, and a spring applied around the exterior of the flllingtube and serving to depress or move it outward to close said valve, substau tially as herein described.
