Definitions
- a folding bed frame for sofa-beds having a plurality of frame sections, including a foot section, knee section, trunk section and head section pivoted in end-to-end relation ⁇ and being foldable between an extended bedforming position and a retracted sofa seat-forming position; including support and guiding linkage assemblies for determining the path of movement of the trunk section; and head section actuating link means connected between one of the support linkage assemblies and the head section operative to variably control the speed and amplitude of swinging movement of the head section within the space behind the sofa back center rail, in a manner to permit utilization of a head section having greater length than is possible with conventional sofa-bed structures.
- the present invention relates generally to folding bed frame structures.
- the type of sofa-bed construction with which the present invention is concerned comprises generally a plurality of bed frame sections which are pivotally connected in end-to-end relation and are supported and guided so as to permit the frame to be foldable between an extended bed-forming position and a retracted sofa seat-forming position.
- the bed frame structure is -accommodated in a sofa frame which essentially comprises a seat-forming area having a transversely extending front rail, and a back center rail behind which there is space to accommodate the head section, when the bed frame structure is in folded retracted position.
- the frame sections enclose the mattress under a degree of compression and are generally disposed with a foot section ina plane slightly oi horizontal so as to provide the base for seat cushions thereon; a knee section disposed in a generally vertical position behind the upholstered front rail of the sofa frame; ⁇ a trunk section disposed generally horizontally along the base of the sofa frame; and a head section disposed generally vertically behind the back center rail near the back of the sofa frame.
- the present invention it is proposed to provide a sofa-bed construction which can be opened into a relatively longer bed, and yet close within the normal relatively shallow sofa frame dimensions.
- the extra bed length is obtained by making the head section longer than in present conventional structures, and by providing a con- ACC trol linkage to actuate the head section in a unique manner, the motive force for moving the head section being obtained from and in response to the movement of certain of the members constituting the supporting linkage assemblies for the trunk section of the bed frame structure.
- Applicant overcomes the inherently limited bed length of the prior art structures by the provision of head section actuating link means which are pivotally connected between the head section and a link member of the supporting link assemblage for the trunk section, the actuating link means being connected at a point having movement in a path and in a direction relative to the pivotal connection of the head section with the trunk section such that the speed of the swinging movement of the head section will be variably controlled at different portions of its movement.
- a lengthened head section m-ay be articulated within a relatively shallow sofa frame by providing the structure of the herein described invention, wherein the swinging process at the pivotal connection of the head section and the trunk section will be speeded up during the initial stages of movement of the head section underneath and behind the back center rail during the closing of the bed structure.
- This speeding up of the swinging process prevents the head section from protruding beyond the rear of the sofa frame.
- the swinging movement of the head section is slowed down and diminished in such a manner that the head section will be finally disposed in a plane sloping rearward of Vertical, lying relatively close to the back of the so-fa frame.
- the space required behind the back center rail is thus minimized, so that the back center rail may be located relatively deeply within the sofa frame toward the rear of the frame, which permits advantageous loosepillow back furniture styling.
- the lengthened bed structure is simultaneously achieved with the added length of the head section, and additional lengthening of the foot section if desired, which is accommodated in the retracted position by virtue of the head section being disposed relatively farther from the front of the sof-a frame.
- the present invention relates generally to sofa-beds of the type having an articulated sectional bed frame movable to extended and retracted folded positions, and more particularly to an improved linkage for actuating and controlling swinging movements of the bed frame head section.
- a further object is concerned with the provision of novel means for actuating and controlling the head section during its swinging movements in the area behind the back center rail of the sofa frame so as to permit a more complete utilization of such area and permit deepening of the sofa seat for advantageous loose-pillowback furniture styling.
- Another object of the invention is to provide improved linkage operating means for controlling the swinging movements of the lengthened head section during folding and unfolding of the bed frame so that the swinging movement will be speeded up during the initial stages of folding in which the lengthened head section is moved underneath and behind the back center rail, and slowed down and diminished as the lengthened head section approaches its fully folded upright position adjacent the rear of the sofa frame.
- a positive control is provided during the folding and unfolding movements, and by coordinating the speed of movement of the lengthened head section about its pivotal axis, the lengthened head section will be prevented from protruding beyond the rear of the sofa frame during any portion of its travel.
- Still another object is to provide in connection with the foregoing object, a unique camming action exerted upon the lengthened head section by the actuating means, which permits that various speeds and amplitude of movement of the swinging head section are accomplished at various portions of the swing, as desired.
- a still further object is to provide an actuating connection with the lengthened head section, which can be varied according to a desired pattern, and wherein the connection to the lengthened head section will be spaced at variable distances from the axis of swinging movement of the lengthened head section at different positions of its travel to meet varied design objectives.

- the bell cranks 23 and 30 together with their associated connecting linkages and other linkages as thus far described, are conventionally known arrangements for controlling the movements of the foot and knee sections, and to fold the legs 29 and 41 during folding and unfolding movements of these sections by an operator lirst grasping a cross bar 46 at the outermost end of the foot section to [fold the foot and knee sections into their retracted positions, simultaneously folding the leg 41; then grasping a cross bar (not shown) transversely connected to the knee section side rails at either side and lifting and closing the bed structure into the sofa frame, simultaneously causing leg 29 to fold into retracted position as the bell crank 23 rotates about fulcrum pin 24.
- the foot section 16 becomes the seat base upon which the seat cushions of the sofa are placed.
- the knee section 17 is substantially vertically positioned closely behind the sofa front rail 10
- the trunk section 18 is positioned generally horizontally along the bottom of the sofa below the foot section with which it cooperates to hold the folded mattress therebetween.
- the head section 19 in the completely folded position of the bed frame extends substantially vertically adjacent the back wall 12 within the space 13 behind the back center rail member 11.
- control means other than conventionally available means must be provided in order to control the movements of the head section if it is to remain within the contines of the sofa structure while being moved between a seat-forming position and a bed-forming position.
- the mechanism for positively guiding and controlling the swinging movements of a lengthened head section comprises a main feature of the present invention, and will now be more fully explained in detail.
- FIG. 1 it is proposed to utilize two conventional cooperatively associated linkage systems which are shown in FIG. 1 as comprising rear support linkage means B and front support linkage means C, these two systems being intercoupled and cooperatively connected with the trunk section so as to direct and guide its movements during folding and unfolding operations of the bed frame,
- the rear support linkage means B is shown as comprising a rear hanger link 47 which has one end connected at a fixed pivot point 48 at the upper end of the bracket 15. The other end of the hanger link is pivoted at 49 t0 one end of a rear support link 50, this link having its other end pivotally connected with the joint pivot 22 connecting the trunk section and head section.
- the front support linkage means is shown as comprising a main front anchor link 51 which is connected at its lowermost end to a front fixed pivot point 52 toward the forward end of the horizontal frame member 14, the outer end of the anchor link being pivoted at 53 adjacent and inwardly positioned with respect to one end of a link 54 which is pivoted between its ends at a pivot point 55 to the rear support link 50 for a relative swinging movement.
- the other end of the link 54 is pivotally connected with a second link 56 by a pivot connection 57.
- the link 56 is connected by a pivot 58 which is inwardly spaced from the pivot 49 at the outermost end of the rear hanger link 47.
- the end of link 54 which extends beyond the pivoted connection 53 is connected by a pivot 59 with the outermost end of the other arm as indicated at 60 of the bell crank 23.
- the connected end portion of the link 54 and the arm 60 of the bell crank 23 thus become operative elements of the front support linkage means, and the interconnected links 54 and 56 cooperate to form coordinating connecting means between the rear support linkage means B and the front support linkage means C, and determine the path of movement of the trunk frame section during folding and unfolding operations thereof.
- the front support linkage means C is connected at the fulcrum pin 24 with the trunk section at a point forwardly positioned with respect to the pivotal joint 22 at which the rear support linkage means B connects lwith the trunk section.
- the pivoted inner end of the front anchor link 51 is provided with an angularly projecting arm 61 which is connected to one end of a tension spring 62, the other end of this spring being anchored to the horizontal frame member 14 at a point 63 thereon by means of an appropriate attaching lug 64 as shown in FIG. 2.
- This spring operates in a manner well known in this type of bed construction and is provided to assist the operator in moving the bed frame from the folded seatforming position to the extended bed-forming position.
- the head section 19 is free to move about its pivotal connection 22 with the trunk section 18 and that it becomes necessary to create swinging movements of the head section in coordination with the movements of the trunk section as determined by the front support linkage means and rear support linkage means systems.
- the present invention includes a unique head section actuating means as generally indicated at D in FIG, l, and diagrammatically illustrated in FIGS. 6 and 7, which will now be described in detail.
- the swinging movement of the head section must be slowed down and diminished as it approaches a vertical position at the end of its movement in the space 13, in order that the head section will lie relatively close to the back of the sofa frame, thus utilizing to the best advantage the available space above and behind the back center rail 11 to accommodate the added length of the head section and adjacent portion of the mattress.
- the main front anchor link 51 is utilized as a power source in a unique manner for motivating the head section actuating means D, which is connected between the head section and a point on the anchor link 51 having movement in a path and in a direction relative to the pivotal connection between the head section with the trunk section such that the speed of the swinging movement of the head section will be variably controlled at different portions thereof as the head section is moved into and out of the space 13 behind the back rail member.
- head section actuating means for accomplishing this purpose, there is shown in FIG. l a rocker arm 65 which is pivoted between its ends by a pivot 66 upon the link 54 between the pivots 53 and 55. The lowermost end of this rocker arm, as viewed in FIG.
- FIGS. 8 and 9 there is shown a modified embodiment of the head section actuating means, wherein the parts are illustrated diagrammatically, and corresponding numerals have been applied to such parts as are similar to those previously described.
- the modified embodiment differs primarily in that the rocker arm 65 is now modified to provide an angle link 65a, and that the pivotal connection with the head section 19 provides a camming action.
- Such camming action may be accomplished in a variety of ways.
- the camming action is accomplished by providing a pin 73 at the end of the roc-ker arm 65a which is connected to the head section, this pin being positioned moveably within a slot 74 in the side rail of the head section 19.
- the required camming action is provided which varies the speed and amplitude of the swinging movement of the head section about the pivotal joint 22. It will be observed by comparing the positions of the pin 73 in FIG. 8 lwith the position of this pin in FIG. 9 that its distance with respect to the pivotal connection 22 is greater when the head section and trunk section are substantially coplanar, than when the head section is positioned at an angle to the trunk section as shown in FIG. 9.
