UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT SIMON, OF WVEEHAVKEN, NE\V JERSEY.
METHOD OF MAKING FILLING OR TRAM FOR SILK FABRICS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,489, dated March 1, 1887.
Application filed March 21, 1885.
. which Figure 1 is a plan view of myimproved silk fabric. Fig. 2 is an enlarged-cross-section of a raw-silk thread as used therein. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side View of the tram used in the fabric.
This invention relates to a new method of making a filling or tram forsilk fabric,in which the shuttle threads are each composed of a series of tram threads that lie substantially parallel to one another in the weft.
I proceed in the following manner to make a shuttle thread or filling for my fabric: First, a series of cocoon-threads,a a, Fig.2, are united by their natural gum and formed into a rawsilk thread, '1). Of such raw-silk threads two Serial No.1i39,627. (No model.)
or more are then doubled and twisted together, thus forming a traurthread, d, and a series of these tram-threads d (7, thus produced, are doubled again and twisted but, after dyeing, the second twist is taken out of them, leaving the whole filling A composed of a series of tram-threads, cl, that lie substantially parallel to one another, as in Fig. 3.
In producing asilk fabric with my improved tram A therein, I interlock the warp threads ewith the compound tram-threads A by means of the ordinary mechanism.
What I claim is- The method herein described of preparing filling for silk fabrics, consisting in doubling and twisting a number of raw-silk threads to form tram-threads, doubling and twisting a number of these tram threads, dyeing the suliist-antially as described.

same, and then taking out the second twist,
