Specication of Letters Patent,
i Patented Feb. 17, 1914.
Application filed August 11, 1913. Serial No. 784,127.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, CALi'x'ro Dn LA' TOR- ninN'rn, a subject of the King of Spain, residing at Guadalajara, State of Jalisco, Mexico, have invented certain new and useful improvement in the Manufacture of Footwear, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to the manufacture of woven soles and heels from threads ofhemp, ixtle, or pita, or from silk threads, cord, and the like, and it aims to obtain a strong and solid woven article of the character indicated by a special method of knitting, without requiring the use of the apparatus and implements ordinarily employed for such purpose.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows the braid used to form the frames of the sole and heel, and Fig. 2 shows the said frames sewed to the insole, and the sole and heel partly knitted.
The procedure, according to the invention, is substantially as follows A braid 1 is first made from five strands of thread, and from this braid is constructed a frame having the outline of the desired form of sole, the braid having its ends connected together and being of sufficient length to form the frame in the proper size. This frame is then sewed to the insole 4, which latter is made of pasteboard or leather lined with cloth. l/Vhen the frame has been attached in this way to the insole, the knitting is commenced by forming of the hemp or other thread, or cord, a woof 2 between the two edges of the frame, at the toe end thereof,
and executing upon this woof a series of chain or lock stitches 3 which, in the case of this first woof, interlace with the strands of the braid, as shown in Fig. 2. A second woof is then formed between the two edges of the frame, and adjacent to and parallel with the lirst woof, and upon the second woof there is also executed, in like manner, a series of chain or lock stitches, these stitches interlacing with those of the preceding woo-f and, in the case of the vend.
stitches, with the strands of the braid. The
operations of forming the successive woofs, executing the stitches thereon, and interlacing such stitches with those of the preceding woofs, are repeated as many times as necessary to complete the formation of the sole, the number of stitches on the woofs increasing and decreasing in accordance with the width of the insole at the corresponding points.
After the knitting of the sole has been completed, as above described, the heel frame is formed, in a similar manner, from a second braid 5, and this frame is sewed to the heel portion Of the braid of the sole, and filled with pasteboard cut according to the outline and size required. The tread of the heel is then knitted over this filling and to the heel frame in the same way as the sole, the knitting being completed when the last line of stitches is finished.
I claim as my invention 1. The process of manufacturing soles for shoes comprising the steps of forming out of braid a frame having the outline of the desired form of sole; then forming out of thread a woof between the two edges of said frame; executing on said woof lock stitches interlacing with the strands of braid; then forming another woof between the said edges of the frame and executing on said woof lock stitches interlacing with those of the preceding woof and with the strands of the braid; and repeating the last loperation as many times as necessary to complete the sole.
2. The process of manufacturing soles and heels for shoes comprising the steps of forming out of braid a frame having the outline of the desired form of sole; then forming out of thread a woof between the two edges of said frame; executing on said woof lock stitches interlacing with Vthe strands of braid; then forming another woof between said edges, and executing on said woof lock stitches interlacing with those of the preceding woof and with the strands of the braid; repeating the last operation as many times as necessary to complete the sole; then forming out of braid a freine luwng the outline of the desired In testimony whereof I have affixed my foi-n1 of h eel; sewing said heel frame to the signature in presence of two Witnesses. heel poi-tion of the braid of the sole and CALIXTO DE LA TORRIENTE.
lilling it with pastebozu'd out to the outline and size required; and knitting the VtHeSSeS:
tread of the heel in the same Way as the RAFAEL PARRA7 sole, over said filling and to said heel frame. JOS M. RICO.
