APPARATUS FOR DRAWING LIQUIDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,480, dated March 1, 1887. Application filed August 7, i886. Serial No. 210,331. (No model.)
ters Patent No. 329,945, granted to me November 10, 1885; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various devices going to make up an apparatus of the kind there described, as hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In theaccompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the devices embodying my invention, taken through the pumps from side to side. Fig. 2 represents a similar view from front to rear, taken through one of the drip-reservoirs. Fig. 3 represents Fig. 4 represents the bottom valve arranged below the piston. Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal section of a supplemental check-valve .to be introduced into a barrel from which liquid is drawn; and Fig. 6 represents a detail perspective view of the inner casing of said valve,
or casing, the lid B of which consists of two sections hinged together. This lid or cover B is hinged to the back of body A at the highest part of the latter, and is supported by a rod, 0. The upper end of this rod is bent sidewise ate and journaled in a bearing, D, which is rigid with the under side of the inner section of the cover B. The lower end of said rod passes through a bearing, E, which is pivoted to one side of body A, said rod being bent below said bearing at a, so that it may not be drawn up through the same. The bear- I ing E is in two sectionsan outer and an iiihold said cover'upright by preventing the weight of the cover from forcing the rod through said bearing, although it may be pulled up or pushed down through the same by hand as the cover B is raised and lowered. The screw E will not allow the bearing to turn as easily as a smooth pivot would, but this pivotal motion is sufficient to prevent undue resistance by the binding of bearing E on rod 0,
as the raising or lowering of cover B changes the direction of said rod.
F designates a partition dividing the lower part of casing-body A into two compartments, which have no connection with each other. In each of these compartments there is apump consisting of a pump-body, G, spout 9, cover H, a long cylinder or cylindrical tube, I, on which said body is supported, a piston, J, working in said cylinder, and a piston-rod, K, extending up through the central part of saidcover. On the top of said pumpcover H is rigidly attached a flaring annular guard, H, which is designed to prevent the operator from being splashed, and to the bottom of said I cover, at the center thereof, is rigidly secured a bushing, It, which keeps the piston-rod and piston in vertical and central position, said rod passing through said bushing. The pumpcover H is removable at pleasure.
The piston is provided with a series of per forations, j, which extend through it from end to end. A disk-shaped valve, J, surrounding the piston-rod and freely movable thereon, rests on the upper end of the piston and closes downward passage through the same, though readily lifting to allow upward flow.
In the bottom of each cylinder I there is a bottom valve having a cylindrical body, Z,
with an opening through it, and a clack-valve,
cylinder audcovers the upper end of said opening. A staple or metallic loop, L, rises from the top of said body I behind said valve L, affording a back rest or brace for said valve and also a convenient means of facilitating withdrawal of body Z from the cylinder. After the piston has been withdrawn, a hook may be passed down into said cylinder and caught into said staple. The parts Z L L, which pertain to the bottom valve, may then be easily pulled out.
In my former patent, hereinbefore referred to, each drip-outlet communicated with a pipe which led to the pump-cylinder below the bottom valve and allowed the drip to pass back to the barrel. I now improve upon that construction by arranging a drip-reservoir, M, below each drip-outlet m, and extending a pipe, M, from the bottom of said reservoir to the appropriate cylinder I, making the conncetion with the latter at a point below the bottom valve. Consequently, when the passage thus produced is left open, the operation of the pump will draw the liquid from dripreservoir M and discharge it through the spout g with the liquid which comes directly from the barrel.
I use outlet-valves N similar to those which I employed in the former patent aforesaid, (there marked F F,) and operate them as in that case by valve-reds or pitmen,here marked 0; but in the present instance each outletvalve is located at the bottom of one of the drip-reservoirs M, and closes the pipe M leading therefrom. The pitmen 0 have rings formed attheir upper ends to fit upon studs 2), extending from the ends of a block, P, which is hinged to the back of casingA. This hinged block takes the place of the rock-shaft and disks of the former patent, No. 329,945. It has a handle, 1?, the raising or lowering of which opens or closes the outlet-pipes M at will.
To prevent pumping air and keep a supply of liquid always at each pump,l provide a checkvalve, which is inserted into each barrel from which liquid is to be drawn. The outer end of its outer casing, S, connects with a pipe,R-, which extends to the lower end of one of said cylinders 1'. Its inner casing, T, (shown in detail in Fig. 6,) extends at the rear beyond said outer casing,and is provided with lateral openings t, which communicate with a central longitudinal passage, T, the outer end of which is closed by an outwardly-opening valve, U. The openings 16 are covered by a wire-netting, which serves as a screen. As the valve allows the liquid to be drawn out, but checks its return, it will of course effect the purpose before stated. The bottom of casing-body A has attached to it recessed clamp-blocks V V, held together by a bolt, IV, for securing the cylinders, as in my former patent. Afalsc bottom, to, is also employed in each compartment, as before.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a pump provided with abottom valve opening inwardly, adripreceptacle communicating with theint-erior of said pump, a compartment into which the drip from said pump falls, and an outlet-valve at the bottom of said drip-reservoir, said compartment having a drip-outlet which communicates with said drip-reservoir, substantially as set forth.
2-. In combination with a pump and a compartment into which it dischargesits drip and having a drip-outlet, a drip-reservoir com municating with said outlet and discharging into said pump, a valve located at the outlet of said reservoir, and a valve-rod extending up into said compartment to operate said valve, substantially as set forth.
3. A casing containing two or more compartments which have no communication with each other, pumps arranged one in each compartment, drip-reservoirs located below said compartments, respectively, and communicating with them and withthe pumps, as stated,valves for cutting off communication between said drip-reservoirs and said pumps,valve-rods extending up from said valves into said compartments, and a hinged block to which said rods are attached, in order that all of them may be opened or closed at once.
4-. In COIIlbllJfltlOll with a pump and a pipe leading thereto, a check-valve for insertion in the barrel or other source of supply,said valve having an outer casing to which the pipe is attached and an inner casing extending beyond the former and provided with lateral wire-covered openings, a central passage, and an outwardly-opening valve proper, which closes said passage, substantially as set forth.
