PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,108, dated October 5, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ADAM R. BROWN and WILLIAM H. BELL, of Simpsonville, in the county of Shelby and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps, of which the follow ng is a specification, reference being bad to the annexed drawing, which is a side sectional elevation of our improved pump.
The object of our invention is to provide a pump in which the valves will be submerged, while the piston and pump-cylinder will be located at the top of the well or cistern; also, to provide for the balancing of the column of water in the discharge-pipe of the pump, so as to reduce the labor of pumping.
Our invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The water-box A, which is designed to be submerged in the water of the well or cistern,
is divided into three compartments, ab 0. The compartment 0. communicates with the water of the well through openings d in the bottom of the water-box, and at the top of the compartment a is formed an apertured valve-seat, 6, upon the top of which rests a valve, f, hav ing a leather face and provided with a spindle, g, which extends through a central 0pening in the valve-seat and is provided with a stop, h. The apertured valve-seat e at the bottom of the compartment 0 is covered by a leather-faced valve, f, whose spindle 9 extends through an aperturein the center of the valve-seat into the compartment b, and is provided with a stop, h. A discharge-pipe, B, communicates with the compartment 0 and extends up above the top of the well or cistern, and is provided with a curved discharge-nozzle, G. A pipe, D, communicating with the compartmentb of the water-box A, is connected at its upper end with a pump-barrel, E, con taining a piston, 13,.attached to a piston-rod, j, extending through the cap of the pump and connected with the hand-lever 7c. The shorter arm of the hand-lever k is connected by a link, Z, with a bracket, m, secured to the side of the pump.
The pump-barrel E is provided with a collar, n, which rests upon the platform of the Well. Inthesideofthepump-barrelEisformed a small opening, 0, which is closed bya valve,
19, carried by the angled lever g, which is pivoted in ears 1', projecting from the side of the pump-barrel, and whose horizontal arm carries a weight, .9, which tends to hold the valve 19 to its seat and thus close the hole 0. A rod, t, extending'upward from the weight 8 through the well-platform, is provided with a handle, a, above the well-platform.
The pump is operated by oscillating the handle it, moving the piston 2' up and down in the pump-barrel. \Vhen the pistonz'rises,the partial vacuum created in the compartment 12 of the water-box A causes the valvef to rise and permit water to enter into the-compartment b. \Vhen the piston z descends, acting through the column of water or air contained by the pipe D,
.it exerts a pressure on the Water contained in the compartment 1), causing the valve f to close and opening the valve 1, forcing water into the compartment 0 and through the dischargepipe B. As the pipe B becomes filled with water, water rises also in the pipe D, the air contained by the pipe D being arranged to escape through the opening 0 or around the piston 1', so that the column of water in the riser is counterbalanced by the column of water in the pipe D.
The pump-piston, when reciprocated, alternately draws water into the compartment b of the waterbox A and dischargesit through the valvef into the riser. When it is desired to admit air into the pump-cylinder, to permit the water to run down in the pipe D, the longer arm of the lever q is raised by means of the handle a, and air is allowed to enter the pump-barrel through the opening 0.
By balancing the column of water in the riser as described the pump is made to operate with the application of little power, and it is rendered capable of workingin a deep well.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the pump-barrel E, piston z, and an outwardly-opening valve in the pump-barrel below the point reached by the piston in its downstroke, of the waterbox A, provided with compartments a b 0, apertured valve-seats e e, and valves f f, the riser B, and the pipe D, connecting the pumpbarrel with the water-box, substantially as herein shown and describe 2.
