The needle shank and lengthwise bed groove have registrable transverse grooves lockable with a key inserted through the transverse grooves.
The lower end of the needle shank is cut off obliquely.
KNITTING TOOL MOUNTING In warp knitting machines, the knitting tools, in particular a plurality of needles, are fixed in needle mounts or alternatively, in he case of single needles, in grooves on the beds. In case of breakage of single needles, only the broken needle need be replaced, whereas in the case of needle mounts, a whole mount with several needles must be replaced, with resulting increased cost.
Single needles have conventionally been provided with a specially bent foot, both to fix the single needle in lengthwise position and to assume lateral turning moments. For needle mounts, needles with a straight shank and without a bent foot are used. Hence it has been necessary to stock two types of needles, and this is quite inconvenient and uneconomical.
This invention is directed to the problem of providing a needle with a straight shank and without a special foot, capable of being used either as a single needle or for needle mounts. According to the invention, the straight shank of the needle and the grooves of the bed which accommodate the needles are provided in the same location with a transverse groove in which a key is inserted to secure the needle. To facilitate removal of the needles from the groove, the needle is cut obliquely at the end of the shank, and its lower end protrudes from the grooves.
In the accompanying drawing:
FIG. 1 is a sectional view showing a preferred embodiment of the invention,
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary view, partly in section, of a disassembled portion of FIG. 1, and
FIG. 3 is a partial sectional view of the key and retaining means.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the needle 1 is provided with a straight shank 2 having a transverse groove 3. The needies 1 are inserted in lengthwise grooves 5 on bed 4. These grooves 5 are provided at a suitable point with a through transverse groove 6, in which a key 7 is inserted, thus retaining the needles in the bed.
After inserting the needles 1 in the grooves 5 of the bed and inserting the key 7, the cover plate 8 and the needle I are secured to the bed by means of screw 9, having a shank passing through cover plate 8 and bed 4 as shown.
This manner of mounting the needles, according to the invention, makes it possible, by simple means, to use the same type of needle, viz. a needle with no foot, either as a single needle or in needle mounts in known manner. In needle mounts, several needles are imbedded in cast lead or synthetic material.
At the lower end of the shank, the needle is provided with a bevel 10 projecting from below the grooves, so that it may readily be removed from the grooves with a tool.
What we claim is:
1. A knitting tool mounting comprising a bed having a lengthwise extending groove at its upper end for the reception of the straight shank of a needle and a transverse groove through said lengthwise groove near the lower end of the lengthwise groove, a needle having its straight shank in and ex tending beyond the ends of the lengthwise groove of the bed and provided with a transverse groove registrable with the transverse groove, 21 key inserted through both transverse grooves to hold the parts assemble, a cover plate on the bed and means extending through the cover plate and bed for securing the cover plate to the bed.
2. A mounting according to claim I, wherein the needle is cut offobliquely at the lower end of the :shank.
3. A knitting tool mounting according to claim 1, wherein the bed and cover plate are recessed to form a space into which the lower end of the needle extends.
4. A mounting according to claim 1 wherein the bed groove is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bed and the cover plate securing means holds the needle in place by pressure thereon.
5. A mounting according to claim 1 wherein the bed is provided with a plurality of lengthwise grooves for the reception of a plurality of straight shank needles.

Claims (5)

1. A knitting tool mounting comprising a bed having a lengthwise extending groove at its upper end for the reception of the straight shank of a needle and a transverse groove through said lengthwise groove near the lower end of the lengthwise groove, a needle having its straight shank in and extending beyond the ends of the lengthwise groove of the bed and provided with a transverse groove registrable with the transverse groove, a key insErted through both transverse grooves to hold the parts assemble, a cover plate on the bed and means extending through the cover plate and bed for securing the cover plate to the bed.
2. A mounting according to claim 1, wherein the needle is cut off obliquely at the lower end of the shank.
