OSBORN B. HALL, OF MALDEN, MASSAGIIUSE'FIS.V
MACHINE FOR TAPPNG MAINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N'o. 358,445, dated March 1, 1887.
Application filed December il. 1886. Serial No. 221,329. (No model.) I
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OsBoRN B. HALL, of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Tapping WatenPipes Under Pressure, which will,in connection with the accompanying drawings,
be hereinafter fully described, and specifically defined in the appended claims.
This invention relates to mechanism for tapping waterpipes under pressure; and it consists in the construction and combination of divers devices embodiedtherein, as hereinafter more particularly and fully'set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine embodying my invention, shown as secured to the water-pipe. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View, the section being horizontal and taken as on lineX X, Fig. 3,and the view being as from above that line. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation, the section being taken as on line IV W, Fig. 2, the water-pipe being also shown in section.
In said views, A represents the waterpipe, and B the body or reservoir, of my tapping meohanism, the bottom ofwhich latter is shown as formed ,with a base lrim or flange, a, between which and pipe A is interposed the packing-ring' or gasket b, which is compressed in place by means of clamping chains C, attached to the ends of bars c, which bear upon lugs d of body B. At the top of B is a circular plate, e, which rests in a concentric seat iu the wall of B, and is held in position bythe flat ringf, which,by means of screws n, Fig. 1, serves to press the packing-ring g firmly in place. In plate e the drill-tap h and carrierz are respectively journaled equidistant from the center, and are each provided with a stuffing-box, t, for packing the joint between them and the plate. I
The carrier z' is formed, as shown, to receive the threaded stud of stop-cock j, which latter is threaded at its lower end to enter the threaded hole la in pipe A as left by tap h.
Two standards, l, secured in lugs formed upon body B, support and secure in place the crossbar m, in which is threaded the depressing-screw n, actuated by its handwheelp, and 5o which is arranged to act upon drilltap h and carrier i, as they are respectively brought beneath said screw. A lever-ratchet, q, is shown as employed to actuate said drill-tap and earrier. Said plate e is revolved in its seat by means of a spanner or lever engaged with studs u, formed upon the plate for that purpose; but when the water-pressure in the pipe being tapped is considerable, the upward pressure upon and resulting friction of plate e is such 6o as to render great force necessaryto revolve it, thus quickly destroying packing g; and to obviate this I arrange in bar m an adjustable stud, s, to bear in a central seat in said plate e, and which,by being properly adjusted, 6 5 will receive nearly all the upward pressure that is exerted upon said plate, so that it may be revolved with but a tritiing expenditure of force and without injury to packing y.
I am aware that a pipe-tapping mechanism 7o having a hollow body or tank, with means for clamping it to the water-pipe, and having a rotary disk carrying a drill-tap and carrier for the cock, with means for actuating them, are not new; hence I do not claim them as my invention; but
I do claim as follows, to wit:
1. The combination, with a pipe-tapping machine arranged tooperate substantially as described, of a stud arranged to be forced 8o downward upon the center of the rotary toolcarrying plate thereof, substantially as specified.
2. In a pipe'tapping machine, the combination, with body A, bar m, supported above and by said body, rotary plate e, carrying the drill-tap and carrier fi, and. means for de-\ pressing said tools, of stud s, arranged to be forced against the center of said plate and to resist the upward pressure thereon, substan 9o tially as speeitied.
OSBORN B. HALL.
