  • the remainder of the tuning operation is standard with the presettable cam 66 carried by plunger rod 49 engaging the treadle mechanism 42 to vary the tuning elements to the preset stations. Because the motion of the cam 30 moves the selector switch 44 to energize the FM tuner 16, the AM tuner 14 is in effect removed from the system. Therefore, although the treadle mechanism 42 is also varying AM tuner 14, it has no effect on the radio reception. If AM reception is desired, the operator simply moves the cam 30 from right to left which will lower the button guide 22 so that the pin 60 will engage the notch 59 in plunger rod 50 and will slide in channel 53 of plunger rod 49 when the pushbutton is pushed. It can be seen, therefore, that one pushbutton may be used to tune the radio to both preset AM and FM stations by simply operating the cam mechanism 30 between the AM and FM positions.

Abstract

INVENTORS CHARLES E. LYON JOHN S. JARECKI ATTORNEYS PUSIIBUTTON RADIO This invention relates to pushbutton operable devices, and more particularly to a pushbutton operable tuner for a radio receiver adapted to receive different frequency bands.
In the past, most radios, having the capability of pushbutton operation for both AM (amplitude modulation) and FM (frequency modulation) reception, have had some undesirable limitations. For example, the selection of stations was limited, because the setting of the pushbuttons had to be divided between the AM and FM broadcast stations so that for a five button radio, three buttons, for instance, might be set to AM stations and only two buttons to FM stations.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved pushbutton operable tuner for a radio receiver adapted to receive different frequency bands.
It is another object of this invention to provide a pushbutton radio that has one set of pushbuttons where each button operates to position first and second tuning elements to tune the radio to preset stations broadcasting on different frequency bands.
A feature of this invention is a pushbutton radio capable of receiving first and second frequency bands and including one set of pushbuttons each of which operate to position first and second tuning elements to tune the radio to preset stations broadcasting on the different frequency bands, wherein a pushbutton is connected to a sliding member which is coupled by a mode selector to either a first or second actuating member. The actuating members are coupled to the first and second tuning elements so that pushing the pushbutton moves the sliding member to operate the particular actuating member to which it has been coupled by the mode selector thereby positioning the tuner coupled thereto to a preset station.
Another feature of this invention is a pushbutton radio capable of receiving AM and FM broadcast stations and including one set of pushbuttons each of which operate to position first and second elements to tune the radio to preset AM and FM broadcast stations, having a selector switch actuable to electrically switch the radio between FM and AM modes, a button slide connected to the pushbutton and having a connector extending therefrom and being slidably mounted in a button guide, and a cam connected to the button guide that moves the button guide between first and second positions and actuates the selector switch to electrically switch the radio between AM and FM modes corresponding to the first and second positions of the button guide. First and second plunger rods are coupled to the AM and FM tuning elements and each include a channel which slidably receives the connector of the button slide and a notch normal to the channel, so that operating the cam to position the button guide to the first position engages the connector of the button slide with the notch in the plunger rod associated with the first position, and operation of the pushbutton causes the engaged plunger rod to move with the connector sliding in the channel of the unengaged plunger rod to position the tuning element coupled to the engaged plunger rod to a preset station.
Another feature of this invention is an AM-FM pushbutton radio having tuning means including AM and FM tuning elements and a key slide structure carrying a presettable cam thereon for controlling the position of the tuning elements wherein the first and second plunger rods each have first and second relatively movable parts with the presettable cam clamped in a fixed position therebetween so that with the button guide being moved by the cam to the first position, pulling the pushbutton will engage the connector in the notch in the plunger rod corresponding to the first position of the button guide and will move the movable parts of that plunger rod relative to each other to unlock the presettable cam with the connector sliding in the channel of the other plunger rod, thereby permitting the presettable cam to be adjustable and locked in a plurality of positions for controlling the position of the tuning elements.
A further feature of this invention is an AM-FM pushbutton radio having tuning means including AM and FM tuning elements and a key slide structure carrying a presettable cam thereon for controlling the position of the tuning elements, having a locking device to limit the inward movement of the pushbutton to prcventjamming of the tuning means if the cam is operated to move the button guide to the second position with the pushbutton pulled to unlock the presettable cam on the plunger rod associated with the button guide being positioned in the first position.
Another feature of this invention is a pushbutton radio capable of receiving AM and FM broadcast stations and including one set of pushbuttons, each of which operate to position first and second tuning elements to tune the radio to preset AM and FM broadcast stations, having a pushbutton with an extended hollow portion forming a button slide, oppositely disposed connecting members mounted within the hollow portion, and first and second plunger rods extending into the hollow portion and each having a notch which is selectively engaged by one of the oppositely disposed connectors upon moving the button guide between the first and second positions with the cam, so that pushing the button will move the engaged plunger rod to vary the position of the tuning element associated with that plunger rod. In one embodiment of this invention, a pushbutton radio is capable of receiving AM andF M broadcast stations and has one set of pushbuttons each of which operate to position first and second tuning elements to tune the radio to preset AM and FM broadcasting stations. Each of the pushbuttons is connected to a button slide that is slidably mounted in a button guide which is movable between first and second positions. First and second plunger rods are selectively connected to the button slide by a cam which positions the button guide between the first and second positions to move the button slide into engagement with the selected plunger rod. The first and second plunger rods each have a presettable button guide that is locked between two relatively movable portions thereof and which engages a treadle mechanism to position the tuning elements to the preset station. Movement of the treadle mechanism drives both tuning elements but a selector switch that is responsive to movement of the cam electrically switches the radio between AM and FM operation so that one of the tuners is rendered inoperative at all times. When changing the preset AM station, for instance, the operator moves the cam to position the button guide to engage the button slide with the plunger rod which is coupled to the AM tuning element. The operator then pulls the pushbutton which moves the two portions of the engaged plunger rod relative to one another to unlock the presettable cam so that it may be repositioned. An interlock device limits inward motion of the pushbutton should the operator inadvertently operate the cam to move the button guide to the FM position with the pushbutton pulled consequential to changing the presettable cam position on the AM plunger rod.
In a second embodiment of the invention, each of the pushbuttons has an extended hollow portion which forms a button slide, which is slidably mounted in a button guide similar to that described in the first embodiment. First and second plunger rods coupled to AM and FM tuning elements respectively extend into the hollow portion. Movement of the cam moves the button guide between first and second positions so that the plunger rods are selectively engaged by connectors oppositely disposed within the hollow portion. Operation of the pushbutton moves the button slide and engaged plunger rod to position the tuning elements associated therewith to a predetermined broadcast station.
Referring to the figures of the drawing, FIGS. l4 illustrate the general construction of a pushbutton radio capable of receiving AM and FM broadcast stations. The radio has one set of pushbuttons 12 each of which operate to position AM 14 and FM 16 tuning elements (FIG. 4) to tune the radio to preset AM and FM broadcasting stations.
The radio 10 is comprised of an escutcheon 18 having a manual tuning knob 19 and a volume control knob 20 mounted thereto. A button guide assembly 22 is movably mounted to the escutcheon 18 by a frame 24 (FIG. 37. The button guide 22 is moveably secured to the frame 24 by the bent fingers 26. There is a clearance between the button guide assembly 22 and the frame 24 so that the button slide assembly can be moved in an upward and downward direction within the frame. A cam comprising an elongated thin strip of sheet material 31 is slidably clamped to the top of the frame 24 by clamp 32. Bent portions 34 and 35 of the cam 30 form the cam surfaces, and the archlike projections 37, 38 and 39 and 40, that are integral with the button guide 22, form the cam follower surfaces.
In FIG. I the cam 30 is moved from right to left so that the bent portions 34 and 35 of the cam 30 ride over arch-shaped portions 37 and 39 of the button guide 22 to move the button guide to the lower position in the frame 24. In FIG. 2 the cam 30 is moved from left to right so that the bent portions 34 and 35 ride under the arch- shaped portions 38 and 40 to move the button guide 22 to the upper position in the frame 24. With the button guide in the lower position as shown in FIG. I, the radio is set for AM operation, and with the button guide in the raised position as shown in FIG. 2, the radio is set for FM operation.
The pushbuttons 12 are slidably supported within the but- 7 ton guide 22 and move between the upper and lower positions with the button guide. The radio may be tuned either manually with the knob 19 or with the pushbuttons in the manner as described in US. Pat. No. 2,793,531 issued to R. E. Thompson and assigned to the assignee of the present invention.
The radio has an AM tuner 14 and an FM tuner 16, that is mounted in piggyback style to the AM tuner 14 as shown in FIG. 4. A treadle mechanism 42 is operated by the manual knob 19 or the pushbuttons l2 and is connected to both the AM and FM tuners so that when the treadle mechanism 42 is moved both tuners are varied simultaneously. Operation of piggyback AM and FM tuners such as this is described in patent No. 3,251,012 issued to N. .I. Kazyk et al. and assigned to the assignee of the present invention. A mode selector switch 44 (FIG. 4) is actuated by the cam 30 to electrically energize either the AM tuner 14 or FM tuner 16, depending on whether the cam 30 is operated to move the button guide 22 to the lower position for AM operation or to the upper position for FM operation.
The key slide structure 45 shown mounted in the radio in FIG. 3 and removed from the radio in FIGS. 5 and 6 is unique in that it offers pushbutton tuning to a preselected station for both AM and FM tuners for each pushbutton. Key slide assembly 45 includes a button slide 47 and a pair of plunger rods 49 and 50. The button slide is slidably mounted on the button guide 22, and theplunger rods are mounted adjacent to each other within the radio, and each has a channel 52 and 53 respectively that are inverted with respect to one another. The relative positions of the channels may be clearly seen in FIG. 7. Each channel 52 and 53 has a notch 55 and 56 at the end thereof closest to the pushbutton which is normal to the channel and a notch 58 and 59 that is substantially intermediate the ends of the channel and normal thereto. Staked to the button slide 47 is a connector or pin 60. With the pushbutton at rest, the intermediate notches 58 and 59 of the channels 52 and 53 are aligned and receive the connector 60 therethrough (FIG. 6), and they form a passage for the connector 60 between the channels.
Referring to FIG. 3, each of the plunger rods 49 and 50 have relatively movable portions 63 and 64 and presettable cams 66 and 67 each of which is locked between the two relatively movable portions 63 and 64 in the known manner. The cams 66 and 67 strike the treadle mechanism 42 when the pushbutton is operated, to tune the tuning elements to the preset station.
The preset station may be changed by manually tuning the radio to the desired station. The plunger rod 49, for instance, is engaged by the connector 60 by positioning the button guide 22 with the cam 30 to the upper position. Pulling outwardly on the pushbutton 13 moves the two relatively movable portions 63 and 64 relative to each other to unlock the cam 66. The pushbutton 13 is then pushed all the way in and the cam strikes the treadle mechanism 42 and is aligned therewith. At the end of the inward motion of the pushbutton 13 the two relatively movable parts 63 and 64 are once again moved with respect to each other to lock the cam 66 in a fixed position corresponding to the station to which the manual tuner 19 had positioned the treadle mechanism 42.
In operation, suppose FM reception is desired the operator moves the cam 30 from left to right which causes the button guide 22 to be raised to the upper position in the frame 24. Because the button slide 47 is mounted within the button guide 22, it too is raised moving the pin 60 within the passage formed by the aligned notches 58 and 59 until the pin 60 is contained within the notch 58 in the plunger rod 49. Pushing the pushbutton 13 moves the button slide 47 and connector 60 into engagement with the wall of notch 58. Continued movement of the pushbutton, slides plunger rod 49 forward. The plunger rod 50 does not move because connector 60 is free to move within the channel 52 located in plunger rod 50. Once the proper plunger rod has been selected, the remainder of the tuning operation is standard with the presettable cam 66 carried by plunger rod 49 engaging the treadle mechanism 42 to vary the tuning elements to the preset stations. Because the motion of the cam 30 moves the selector switch 44 to energize the FM tuner 16, the AM tuner 14 is in effect removed from the system. Therefore, although the treadle mechanism 42 is also varying AM tuner 14, it has no effect on the radio reception. If AM reception is desired, the operator simply moves the cam 30 from right to left which will lower the button guide 22 so that the pin 60 will engage the notch 59 in plunger rod 50 and will slide in channel 53 of plunger rod 49 when the pushbutton is pushed. It can be seen, therefore, that one pushbutton may be used to tune the radio to both preset AM and FM stations by simply operating the cam mechanism 30 between the AM and FM positions.
FIGS. 7a7d illustrate a protective illustrate a protective feature that has been built into the radio to prevent jamming of the tuning mechanism when the operator is setting the pushbutton to a different broadcasting station. For example, in FIG. 7a the cam 30 has been set for FM operation, therefore the pin 60 is engaged in the notch 58 of plunger rod 49. In order to reset the pushbutton to a different FM station, the operator pulls the pushbutton outwardly, which causes the pin 60 to engage the wall of notch 58 to move plunger rod 49 outwardly with the pin 60 sliding in channel 52 of plunger rod 50. This moves the two portions 63 and 64 of the plunger rod 49 relative to each other to release the cam 66 so that it may be set to the new position of the treadle mechanism 42. Now if the pushbutton is pushed in all the way, the two portions of the plunger rod 49 will once again be moved relative to each other to lock the presettable cam 66 into position. However, there is a chance that the operator might move the cam 30 from right to left thereby lowering the button guide 22 which will lower the button slide 47 and the pin 60 connected thereto. With the pushbutton pulled all the way out, however, the notch 58 of plunger rod 49 is aligned with the notch 55 in the end of the channel 52 (FIG. 7b) so that a passage is formed by the aligned notches. Movement of cam 30 will therefore drop the pin 60 into channel 53 of plunger rod 49 (FIG. 7c). Should the pushbutton now be pushed inwardly in an attempt to lock the presettable cam in position, the connector 60 will engage the wall of the notch 55 in the plunger rod 50 and will attempt to move that plunger rod inwardly towards the treadle mechanism, however, the pin 60 slides in the channel 53 of plunger rod 49 only until the pin 60 strikes the end wall of that channel (FIG. 7d). When this occurs, the pushbutton is locked up in position and can no longer be pushed forward so that there can be nojamming of the tuning device.
FIGS. 8l0 illustrate a second embodiment of the invention. In this embodiment, the pushbutton 70 has an elongated portion 72 that is mounted in the button guide 22 of the first embodiment and functions as a button slide. The button slide 72 is hollow and has two connector pins 75 and 76 oppositely disposed at the top and bottom of the button slide. ' lwo plunger rods 78 and 79 are mounted in the radio adjacent to each other and extend into the hollow button slide 72. The plunger rods 78 and 79 each have a notch 80 and 8] respectively in the ends thereof. With the plunger rods mounted adjacent to each other, the notch 81 in rod 79 opens downwardly from the bottom edge 86 of the rod 79 while the notch 80 in rod 78 opens upwardly from the top edge 85 thereof.
In operation, if the cam 30 is moved from right to left, the button guide 22 is lowered which engages the notch 80 in plunger rod 78 with connector pin 76 in the button slide 72. Therefore, when the pushbutton is operated the pin 76 strikes the wall of the notch 80 and moves the plunger rod 78 forward until the cam 83 strikes the treadle mechanism 42 to tune the tuning element 14 to a preset station.
If FM operation is desired the cam 30 is moved to the FM position which raises the button guide 22 and the button slide 72 so that connector pin 75 fits into the notch 81 in plunger rod 79. Operation of the pushbutton then acts to move plunger rod 79 until the cam 84 strikes the treadle mechanism 42' to vary the FM tuning element 16 to tune the radio to a preset FM broadcast station.
What has been described, therefore, is an improved pushbutton radio that has one set of pushbuttons where each button operates to position first and second tuning elements to tune the radio to preset stations broadcasting on different frequency bands.
The positions of the cams 83 and 84 may be changed by engaging the pins 75 and 76 in the respective notches 8] and 80 of the plunger rods and pulling on the pushbutton to unlock the cams in a manner similar to that described for the first embodiment.
We claim:
1. A pushbutton radio for receiving first and second frequency bands and having one set of pushbuttons each of which can be operated to position first and second tuning elements to tune the radio to preset broadcast stations in the different bands, said radio including in combination, a selector switch actuable to switch the radio between the first and second frequency bands, cam means, a button guide connected to said cam means, said cam means being operated to move said button guide to first and second positions, a button slide connected to the pushbutton, first and second plunger rods coupled to the first and second tuning elements, presettable cam means mounted to said first and second plunger rods, means integral with said first and second plunger rods for locking said presettable cam means in a selected position and unlocking the same, said presettable cam means being selectively coupled to the first and second tuning elements, said cam means for coupling said button slide to said first and second plunger rods, said cam means in said first position with the radio switched to the first frequency band acting to couple said button slide to said first plunger rod so that pushing the pushbutton slides said button slide to move said first plunger rod and said presettable cam means thereon to position the first tuning element to tune the radio to a preset broadcast station of the first frequency band, said cam means in said second position with the radio switched to the second frequency band acting to couple said button slide to said second plunger rod, so that operation of the pushbutton slides said button slide to move said second plunger rod and said presettable cam means thereon to position the second tuning element to tune the radio to a preset broadcast station in the second frequency band, and pulling said pushbutton with said cam means in said first and second positions operates said means integral with each said plunger rod to unlock said presettable cam means to permit moving the same to a different position, and pushing the pushbutton operates said means integral with each said plunger rod to lock said presettable cam means in the different position.
2. The pushbutton radio of claim 1 wherein said button slide includes engaging means connected thereto, and said first and second plunger rods have channel means for slidably receiving said engaging means and passage means including a notch in each of said plunger rods normal to said channel therein, said notches being aligned to form a passage connecting said channels, said engaging means selectively extending through said notch in each of said plunger rods, said cam means acting to position said button guide to the first position and switching the radio to the first frequency band so that said engaging means is received in said channel means of said second plunger rod whereby operation of the pushbutton slides said button slide in said button guide with said engaging means sliding in said channel means of said second rod and engaging the wall of the notch in said first plunger rod to move said first rod to vary said first tuning element to tune the radio to a preset station in the first frequency band, and said cam means acting to position said button guide to the second position and switching the radio to the second frequency band, so that said engaging means moves in said passage means with said notches being aligned and being received in said channel means of said first plunger rod, whereby operation of the pushbutton slides said button slide in said button guide with said engaging means sliding in said channel means of said first rod and engaging the wall of said notch in said second plunger rod to move the same to vary said second tuning element to tune the radio to a preset station in the second frequency band.
3. The pushbutton radio of claim 1 wherein said button slide is formed by an extended hollow portion of the pushbutton, said button slide having an open end and contact means connected thereto, and said first and second plunger rods are coupled to the first and second tuning elements and extend into said hollow portion of said button slide through said open end,
each said plunger rod having a portion being selectively con--- nected to said contact means.
4. The pushbutton radio of claim 3 wherein said contact means includes first and second oppositely disposed connecting members mounted to said extended hollow portion of said button slide and said portions of said first and second plunger rods each have a notch therein, said cam means acting to position said button guide to the first position so that said first connecting member engages said notch in said first plunger rod whereby pushing the pushbutton slides said button slide with said connecting member engaging the wall of said notch to move said first plunger rod to vary the first tuning element, and said cam means positioning said button guide to the second position so that said second connecting member engages said notch in said second plunger rod whereby pushing the pushbutton slides said button slide with said connecting member engaging the wall of said notch to move said second plunger rod to vary the second tuning element.
5. An AM-FM pushbutton radio having tuning means including AM and FM tuning elements and a key slide structure carrying a presettable cam thereon for controlling the position of the tuning elements, the radio including in combination, a pushbutton, a selector switch actuable to switch the radio between FM and AM modes, cam means, a button guide, said cam means being connected to said button guide and being operated to move the same to first and second positions, a button slide connected to said pushbutton and slidably mounted in said button guide and movable therewith, a connector extending from said button slide, first and second plunger rods coupled to the FM and AM tuning elements, said first and second plunger rods each having channel means for slidably receiving said connector and passage means including a notch in each of said plunger rods normal to said channel therein and being aligned to form a passage connecting said channels, said connector selectively extending through said notch in each said plunger rod, said cam means acting to position said button guide to the first position and said selector switch switching the radio to the FM mode, so that said connector extends through said notch in said first plunger rod and is received in said channel means of said second plunger rod whereby pushing said pushbutton slides said button slide in said button guide with said connector engaging the wall of said notch in said first plunger rod and sliding in said channel means of said second plunger rod to move the first plunger rod to vary the FM tuning element, said cam means acting to position said button guide to the second position and said selector switch switching the radio to the AM mode so that said connector moves in said passage means with said notches being aligned and is received in said channel means of said first said first plunger rod, whereby pushing said pushbutton slides said button slide in said button guide with said connector engaging the wall of said notch in said second plunger rod and sliding in said channel means of said first plunger rod to move the second plunger rod to vary said AM tuning element 6. The AM-FM pushbutton radio of claim further includ ing said first and second plunger rods each having first and second relatively movable parts with a presettable cam clamped in a fixed position therebetween, said cam means acting to position said button guide to the first position so that said connector is received in said channel means of said second plunger rod whereby pulling said pushbutton slides said button slide in said button guide and engages said connector with the wall of said notch in said first plunger rod and slides said connector in said channel means of said second plunger rod to move the first plunger rod and to move said first part thereof relative to said second part to unclamp said presettable cam, and said cam means acting to position said button guide to the second position so that said connector is received in said channel means of said first plunger rod, whereby pulling said pushbutton slides said button slide in said button guide to engage the wall of said notch in said second plunger rod and slides said connector in said channel means in said first plunger rod to move the second plunger rod to move said first part thereof relative to said second part to unclamp said presettable cam, thereby permitting the presettable cams to be locked in a plurality of positions for controlling the position of the AM and FM tuning elements.
7. The AM-M pushbutton radio of claim 6 further including locking means to limit the pushing movement of said pushbutton to preventjamming of the tuning means with said pushbutton being pulled to unlock said presettable cam and said cam means being moved to position said button guide from the first to the second positions.
8. The AM-FM pushbutton radio of claim 7 wherein said locking means includes a second notch in each of said plunger rods normal to said channel means therein and spaced from said first notch, said cam means positioning said button guide to the first position so that said connector is received in said channel means of said second plunger rod, whereby pulling said pushbutton slides said button slide in said button guide with said connectors sliding in said channel means to enga e the wall of said first notch In said first plunger rod to move t e same to unclamp said presettable cam and to align said first notch with said second notch in said second plunger rod to connect the respective channel means, and said cam means acting to move said button guide to the second position so that said connector moves in said aligned notches into said channel means of said first plunger rod, whereby pushing said pushbutton causes said connector to slide in said channel means of said first plunger rod and to strike the wall of said channel means therein thereby limiting the motion of said first plunger rod to preventjamming of the tuning means.
9. A pushbutton tuner for a wave signal receiver having tuning elements for receiving signal stations in first and second frequency bands, including in combination, one set of pushbuttons, a plurality of groups of first and second actuating devices, each group associated with a different one of said pushbuttons, mode selector means for connecting a given pushbutton with one of said first and second actuating devices, presettable means operable by each actuating device for positioning the tuning elements to preset stations in the different bands, locking means operable by each pushbutton through said actuating device for locking said presettable means in a predetermined position and unlocking the same, said mode selector means connecting a given pushbutton to said first actuating device so that inward movement of said pushbutton operates said presettable means through said first actuating device to position the tuning elements to select a preset station, and outward movement of said given pushbutton operates said locking means through said first actuating device to unlock said presettable means so the same can be reset to a different station, and antijamming means, said antijamming means acting to prevent said mode selector means from connecting any one of said pushbuttons to an associated one of said group of second actuating devices and being moved inwardly to position the tuning elements, with said given pushbutton being connected to said first actuating device and being moved outwardly to unlock said presettable means to set another station.

Claims (9)

1. A pushbutton radio for receiving first and second frequency bands and having one set of pushbuttons each of which can be operated to position first and second tuning elements to tune the radio to preset broadcast stations in the different bands, said radio including in combination, a selector switch actuable to switch the radio between the first and second frequency bands, cam means, a button guide connected to said cam means, said cam means being operated to move said button guide to first and second positions, a button slide connected to the pushbutton, first and second plunger rods coupled to the first and second tuning elements, presettable cam means mounted to said first and second plunger rods, means integral with said first and second plunger rods for locking said presettable cam means in a selected position and unlocking the same, said presettable cam means being selectively coupled to the first and second tuning elements, said cam means for coupling said button slide to said first and second plunger rods, said cam means in said first position with the radio switched to the first frequency band acting to couple said button slide to said first plunger rod so that pushing the pushbutton slides said button slide to move said first plunger rod and said presettable cam means thereon to position the first tuning element to tune the radio to a preset broadcast station of the first frequency band, said cam means in said second position with the radio switched to the second frequency band acting to couple said button slide to said second plunger rod, so that operation of the pushbutton slides said button slide to move said second plunger rod and said presettable cam means thereon to position the second tuning element to tune the radio to a preset broadcast station in the second frequency band, and pulling said pushbutton with said cam means in said first and second positions operates said means integral with each said plunger rod to unlock said presettable cam means to permit moving the same to a different position, and pushing the pushbutton operates said means integral with each said plunger rod to lock said presettable cam means in the different position.
2. The pushbutton radio of claim 1 wherein said button slide includes engaging means connected thereto, and said first and second plunger rods have channel means for slidably receiving said engaging means and passage means including a notch in each of said plunger rods normal to said channel therein, said notches being aligned to form a passage connecting said channels, said engaging means selectively extending through said notch in each of said plunger rods, said cam means acting to position said button guide to the first position and switching the radio to the first frequency band so that said engaging means is received in said channel means of said second pLunger rod whereby operation of the pushbutton slides said button slide in said button guide with said engaging means sliding in said channel means of said second rod and engaging the wall of the notch in said first plunger rod to move said first rod to vary said first tuning element to tune the radio to a preset station in the first frequency band, and said cam means acting to position said button guide to the second position and switching the radio to the second frequency band, so that said engaging means moves in said passage means with said notches being aligned and being received in said channel means of said first plunger rod, whereby operation of the pushbutton slides said button slide in said button guide with said engaging means sliding in said channel means of said first rod and engaging the wall of said notch in said second plunger rod to move the same to vary said second tuning element to tune the radio to a preset station in the second frequency band.
3. The pushbutton radio of claim 1 wherein said button slide is formed by an extended hollow portion of the pushbutton, said button slide having an open end and contact means connected thereto, and said first and second plunger rods are coupled to the first and second tuning elements and extend into said hollow portion of said button slide through said open end, each said plunger rod having a portion being selectively connected to said contact means.

The pushbutton radio of claim 3 wherein said contact means includes first and second oppositely disposed connecting members mounted to said extended hollow portion of said button slide and said portions of said first and second plunger rods each have a notch therein, said cam means acting to position said button guide to the first position so that said first connecting member engages said notch in said first plunger rod whereby pushing the pushbutton slides said button slide with said connecting member engaging the wall of said notch to move said first plunger rod to vary the first tuning element, and said cam means positioning said button guide to the second position so that said second connecting member engages said notch in said second plunger rod whereby pushing the pushbutton slides said button slide with said connecting member engaging the wall of said notch to move said second plunger rod to vary the second tuning element.
5. An AM-FM pushbutton radio having tuning means including AM and FM tuning elements and a key slide structure carrying a presettable cam thereon for controlling the position of the tuning elements, the radio including in combination, a pushbutton, a selector switch actuable to switch the radio between FM and AM modes, cam means, a button guide, said cam means being connected to said button guide and being operated to move the same to first and second positions, a button slide connected to said pushbutton and slidably mounted in said button guide and movable therewith, a connector extending from said button slide, first and second plunger rods coupled to the FM and AM tuning elements, said first and second plunger rods each having channel means for slidably receiving said connector and passage means including a notch in each of said plunger rods normal to said channel therein and being aligned to form a passage connecting said channels, said connector selectively extending through said notch in each said plunger rod, said cam means acting to position said button guide to the first position and said selector switch switching the radio to the FM mode, so that said connector extends through said notch in said first plunger rod and is received in said channel means of said second plunger rod whereby pushing said pushbutton slides said button slide in said button guide with said connector engaging the wall of said notch in said first plunger rod and sliding in said channel means of said second plunger rod to move the first plunger rod to vary the FM tuning element, said cam means acting to position said button guide to the seCond position and said selector switch switching the radio to the AM mode so that said connector moves in said passage means with said notches being aligned and is received in said channel means of said first said first plunger rod, whereby pushing said pushbutton slides said button slide in said button guide with said connector engaging the wall of said notch in said second plunger rod and sliding in said channel means of said first plunger rod to move the second plunger rod to vary said AM tuning element.

The AM-FM pushbutton radio of claim 5 further including said first and second plunger rods each having first and second relatively movable parts with a presettable cam clamped in a fixed position therebetween, said cam means acting to position said button guide to the first position so that said connector is received in said channel means of said second plunger rod whereby pulling said pushbutton slides said button slide in said button guide and engages said connector with the wall of said notch in said first plunger rod and slides said connector in said channel means of said second plunger rod to move the first plunger rod and to move said first part thereof relative to said second part to unclamp said presettable cam, and said cam means acting to position said button guide to the second position so that said connector is received in said channel means of said first plunger rod, whereby pulling said pushbutton slides said button slide in said button guide to engage the wall of said notch in said second plunger rod and slides said connector in said channel means in said first plunger rod to move the second plunger rod to move said first part thereof relative to said second part to unclamp said presettable cam, thereby permitting the presettable cams to be locked in a plurality of positions for controlling the position of the AM and FM tuning elements.

The AM-M pushbutton radio of claim 6 further including locking means to limit the pushing movement of said pushbutton to prevent jamming of the tuning means with said pushbutton being pulled to unlock said presettable cam and said cam means being moved to position said button guide from the first to the second positions.
8. The AM-FM pushbutton radio of claim 7 wherein said locking means includes a second notch in each of said plunger rods normal to said channel means therein and spaced from said first notch, said cam means positioning said button guide to the first position so that said connector is received in said channel means of said second plunger rod, whereby pulling said pushbutton slides said button slide in said button guide with said connectors sliding in said channel means to engage the wall of said first notch in said first plunger rod to move the same to unclamp said presettable cam and to align said first notch with said second notch in said second plunger rod to connect the respective channel means, and said cam means acting to move said button guide to the second position so that said connector moves in said aligned notches into said channel means of said first plunger rod, whereby pushing said pushbutton causes said connector to slide in said channel means of said first plunger rod and to strike the wall of said channel means therein thereby limiting the motion of said first plunger rod to prevent jamming of the tuning means.
9. A pushbutton tuner for a wave signal receiver having tuning elements for receiving signal stations in first and second frequency bands, including in combination, one set of pushbuttons, a plurality of groups of first and second actuating devices, each group associated with a different one of said pushbuttons, mode selector means for connecting a given pushbutton with one of said first and second actuating devices, presettable means operable by each actuating device for positioning the tuning elements to preset stations in the different bands, locking means operable by each pushbutton through said actuating device for locking said presettAble means in a predetermined position and unlocking the same, said mode selector means connecting a given pushbutton to said first actuating device so that inward movement of said pushbutton operates said presettable means through said first actuating device to position the tuning elements to select a preset station, and outward movement of said given pushbutton operates said locking means through said first actuating device to unlock said presettable means so the same can be reset to a different station, and antijamming means, said antijamming means acting to prevent said mode selector means from connecting any one of said pushbuttons to an associated one of said group of second actuating devices and being moved inwardly to position the tuning elements, with said given pushbutton being connected to said first actuating device and being moved outwardly to unlock said presettable means to set another station.
