My invention relates to washing-machines; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction, as will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in

A A' are standards arranged at right angles to each other and braced apart by a single casting having right-angular arms a a', adapted to be secured to said standards. The several standards have their respective inner portions, b b', upwardly extended and suitably united to the right-angular wings c c of ahead-piece, B, centrally perforated to form a bearing for avertical shaft, D. These upwardly-extended 'portions of the standards are further secured to and braced apart by a right-angular casting, C, located below the head-piece B, and also centrally perforated to form a bearing for the shaft D.
The standards A are -provided with bearings d for horizontal shaftsE E', having secured to their inner ends disks F F', united by a coupling, G, which latter passes through a slot, e, in a plate, f, secured to the lower end of the vertical shaft D, said plate being provided with guides g, designed to operate upon the upwardly-extended inner portions b' of the standards A'.
The horizontal shaftE is provided at its outer end with a fly-wheel, H, and the shaft E', at its outer end, is provided with a pinion, h, adapted to mesh with a gear-wheel, h', journaled on a bearing at the upper outer end, z', of the standard supporting said shaft E', and
to this gear-wheel is secured a crank, I, by which my machine is designed to be operated; or in place of the crank, a band-pulley or other means may be employed to communicate motion to the several operating parts. Secured to the standards supporting the shaft E are right-angular brackets 7c k', forming bearings for a traveler, K, having a central depression, l, in which operates a flanged eccentric, m, secured to said shaft.
To one end of the traveler K is pivotally secured a pawl, M, having its free end passed through a loop, n, on the inner bracket, k', this pawl being held in operative position by said loop and aspring, o, this latter being secured at one end to the traveler K and at the other to the forward portion of said pawl. To the inner bracket, k', is secured one end of a springstop, N, the free end of said stop and that of the pawl- M being arranged to engage the teeth of an annular rack, O, upon the under side of the base Q for a tank, Q', said base having a bearing on the outer upper ends of the standards A A', the tank lbeing designed as a re- 75 ceptacle for clothes when the machine is employed as a washer. The base Q of this tank is preferably composed of wood and provided with a flanged ring, p, designed to engage a similar ring, q, resting upon the standards A A', and adapted to be secured to the upwardlyprojecting portions b b' of said standards. This tank bottom and base are also provided with a central opening, from which projects a casing, r, adapted to inclose the upwardlyextended portions of the standards, and surrounding this casing is a shell, r', provided at its bottom with a series of perforations, r2.

The tank Q' is provided at its upper portion with a iianged seat, w, for a removable cover, T, said seat having a series of perforations, w', through which the drip from the cover runs back into the tank. Designed to rest upon the bottom of the tank is a seat for the clothes, said seat being preferably composed of a series of radial strips, 102, having secured to their upper faces a series of concentric rings, w3, and to their under faces suitable springs, 104, this construction acting as a cushion for the clothes when acted upon by the pounders t', and at the same time permitting the water to have a free circulation throughout said clothes during the operation of washing. The pipe for introducing steam into the tank is composed of sections U,united by swivel-couplings V, said couplings being each composed of an outer shell, x, having an internal iiange, sv', at its lower end to receive theshoulder aof atube, z, this latter part being provided with a collar, a, and constructed at its lower extremity to receive one of the pipesections. The lower section of the exterior steam-pipe, composed of parts U V, connects with a circular pipe, U, located within the tank Q', this circular pipe being provided with a series of perforations, so that the steam may escape and keep the water in said tank at a high state of temperature.
rDhis style of washer is designed for large la-undries; but in machines designed for family use the apparatus for introducing steam into the tank may be omitted.
To the upper end of the shell :v is secured a sleeve, z, into which is projected the upper extremity of the tube a, said sleeve being constructed at its upper terminus to receive a pipe-section. Interposed between the shellx and the collar z2 of the tube z is a spring, zt, which acts to retain the flange of said shell and the shoulder of the tube in close contact to form a tightjoint. This construction and arrangement of the parts forming the coupling V is fully illustrated in detail, Fig. 7
In the operation of my invention, the several parts beingl in their relative positions and motion communicated to the shafts E E', the disks F F on the inner ends of these shafts will be rotated and their coupling G moved back and forth in the slot e of the plate f, thus vertically operating the shaft D. As this shaft is vertically operated it carries with it the arm S, resting in the slots s of the cap-piece It, thereby causing the pounder-blocks t to act upon the clothes which are placed in the tank Q on the cushioned seat formed by the radial strips wz, concentric ringsww, and springs wt. The eccentric m is also operated by the revolution of the shaft E to aetuate the traveler K, thereby causing the pawl M to operate against the teeth of the annular rack 0 to rotate the tank Q', the spring-stop N also engaging said teeth to prevent any backward movement of said tank when the pawl is being carried back from one to engage the next succeeding tooth. By the peculiar coupling connecting the several sections U of the steam-pipe this latter forms no barrier to the rotation of the tank Q', but is carried with said tank during the operation of the machine, and when it is desired to remove the coverT the upper section of the pipe is swung around out of the way, it being intended that this section shall be connected to a main supply-pipe or boiler by a steam-hose.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A supporting-frame consisting of a series ofsuitably-braced standardshaving upwardlyextended inner portions and provided with a flanged ring, in combination with horizontal shafts journaled in bearings on said standards, and each provided at its inner end with a disk, a coupling uniting these disks, a slotted plate operatively secured to said coupling, and a vertical shaft connected to this slotted plate, a horizontal arm removably secured to said vertical shaft and provided with turned down ends carrying blocks, a suitable tank having a central casing and opening, its base provided with an annular rack, and a flanged ring engaging the one on the supporting-frame, a pawl and stop mechanism suitably connected to said frame to engage the annular rack upon the tank-base, and an eccentric on one of the horizontal shafts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Asupporting-frameoonsistingofsuitablybraced standards having upwardly-extended inner portions united by a right-angular centrally-perforated casting, and a centrally-perforated head-piece having ri ght-angularwings, a vertical shaft having a bearing in said casting and head-piece and secured at its lower end to a slotted plate, and a horizontal arm removably connected to this vertical shaft and provided with turned-down ends carrying blocks, in combination with a tank having a central casing, a surrounding shell for said casing perforated at its bottom, and a perforated flanged seat for the tank-cover, a cappiece slotted to receive the horizontal arm and IOO IIO
Y movable cover, a cushion to t withinthe tank and composed of radial strips having upon their upper faces concentric rings and upon their under faces suitable springs, a coupling operatively secured to the slotted plate and united to revolving disks, a paWl and stop mechanism, and an annular rack upon the tank-base arranged to have its teeth in engagement with said mechanism, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. 'Ihe vertical shaft D, having a collar, u2, and lugs u at its upper end and a slotted plate,
i f, at its lower end, in combination with a horizontal arm, S, having grooved sleeve u tted to the vertical shaft and turned down at its ends to receive blocks, springs c o', and bearings B C, a suitable tank, Q, having acentral opening and a casing, r, and upon its bottom an annular rack, O, shafts E E/,earrying disks F F', united by a coupling, e, operating in the slot of the plate f, an eccentric on the shaft E', apavvl and stop mechanism operatively engaging said eccentric and the annular rack on the tank-base, and a suitable supporting-frame for said tank and operating mechanism, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. 'Ihe traveler K, having a depression, Z, and operatively secured to brackets 7c k on a supporting-frame, a spring-pawl pivotally secured to said traveler, and a spring-stop, N, connected to one of the brackets, k, in combination With an eccentric upon a horizontal shaft, E, operative'in the depression of said traveler,asuitable tank provided upon its base with an annular rack,, to engage the spring paWl and stop, and a vertical shaft, D, having suitable bearings and provided with a removable horizontal arm carrying blocks and operatively connected to a disk, F, on said horizontal'shaft, substantially as and for the pur- Y pose set forth.
5. The tank Q', rotated upon asuitable supporting-frame and provided with an interior perforated endless steam-pipe, U, and an exterior steam-pipe composed of a series of sections, U, united by swivel-couplings V, sub-k stantially as set forth.
6. Incombination, the tank Q', rotated upon a suitable supporti 11g-frame and provided with an interior endless steam-pipe having perforations therein, the exterior steanipipe sections U, and the swivel-couplings V, each of the latter composed of an outer shell, x, having an internal flange, x, a tube, e, provided With a shoulder, z', and collar z2, a sleeve, z3, and a spring, e, exteriorly arranged on the tube z between said flange and collar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The supporting-frame consisting of standards A A', having upwardly-extended inner portions, b b', a single casting having arms c a', the headfpiece B, and casting C, in combination with the vertically-operating shaftD, horizontal arm S, having bifurcated turned-dovvn ends t, carrying blocks, slotted plate f, coupling e, and revolving disks upon the inner ends ot' horizontal shafts E E', operating in bearings d d, a flanged eccentric, m, and pinion h on shaft E', atraveler, K, having a depression, Z, for the eccentricm, the spring-pawl M, pivoted to said traveler, the spring-stop N, and brackets 7c 7c', secured to one of the standards A, the iianged ring q. supported by the standards, a suitable tank having a central opening and central casing, r, and provided upon its base with a flanged ring, p, and an annular rack, O, a iiy-Wheel, H, and a gear-wheel, h, driven by a crank, I, all arranged to operate substantially as described.
8. The detachable arm S, having a grooved sleeve, u, and turned-down ends t, carrying blocks, in combination with a vertical operating-shaft provided with lugs to engage said sleeve, and a rotating tank supported upon a suitable frame constructed to carry the operative mechanism for driving said shaft and tank, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
