JAMES B. SWORD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PACKlNG BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358.232. dated February 22, 1887.
Application filed October 26, 1886. Serial No. 217,226. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES B. SWORD, a citizen of the'United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Paoking-Box, of which the following 7 is a specification.
p a perspective view showing one of the strips of the lid partially removed from the box.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the closed box. Figs. 4c and 5 are perspective views of modifications. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 1 2, Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 shows a further modification.
A A are the two end pieces of the box, B
B the side pieces, D the bottom, E E strips forming the lid of the box, and F the usual partition-piece, a abeing the opposite strengthening-bands, and a the center strengtheningband.
I form in each of the end pieces, A, of the box a groove, 6, extending across said end pieces, near the top of the same, and I cut in one or both of the end pieces a slot, d, extending from the groove to the outer face of the end piece. This slot is a trifle wider than either of the strips E E in the present instance, so that each strip may be readily passed longitudinally through the slot, as shown in Fig. 2, until the opposite ends of the strip rest in the grooves b, the strip being then moved laterally until it assumes its proper position and is out of line with the slot d. 'The strap a'" is then nailed down, one nail passing through each of the strips E E, and the end of the strap being tacked down to the side of the box. The strips E E are thereby firmly retained in position, and the packing-box with its contents can be shipped to its destination. If on arrival there the contents of the box have to be examined, the only portion disturbed is the strap a? with its three nails, which can be raised, as shown in Fig. 2. The lids E E are then removed by first sliding them laterally into line with the slot d, and then withdrawing them longitudinally through the slot, either entirely or sufficiently to clear the groove at the opposite end of the box, when the lid can be lifted out, as indicated in Fig. 2. When the examination of the fruit is com pleted, the lids are again inserted into theirplaces, the strap a again fastened, as in Fig. 1, and the box is in all re spects as strong as in the first instance.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a packingbox without the straps a a a",cleats e 6. being secured to the side pieces, B, and overlapping the strips E E, and a central fillingpiece, f, of the form shown in Fig. 5, tending to keep the strips E E apart and overlapping them, in order to hold them down, this filling-piece being securedby a screw or nail, By removing this filling-piece fthe strips E E of the lid can be moved laterally into line with the slot at and withdrawn without disturbing any other portion of the box.
In Fig. 7 I have shown the side pieces, B B, grooved near the upper ends to receive the edges of the lid-strips E E, in place of using either the strap a or the cleat c for holding said strips in place.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, 'in a packing-box, of a removable lid-strip, a permanent structure grooved for the reception of the lid-strip, and having an opening for the withdrawal of the same in the direction of the length of the strip, and means for holding said lid-strip laterally out of line with said opening, allsubstantially as specified. v
2. The combination of the box having grooved ends and opening (Z, the central partition, the removable lid-strips having ends adapted to the grooves in the end strips, and a strap and its fastenings, whereby the lidstrips are confined in position laterally and secured to the central partition of the box, all substantially as specifiecl In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence oftwo subscribing witnesses.
JAMES B. SWORD.
