BUSH-HAMMER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,090, dated February 22, 1887. Application filed September 27, 1886. Serial No; 214,613. (No model.)

To 60% whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HUMPHREY TOOMEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leetes Island, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bush-Hammers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to the class of bush or stone hammers which are provided with detachable blades, and has for its object to greatly simplify, cheapcn, and at the same time improve the construction by making the head of the hammer in a single piece. XVith these ends in view I have devised the simple and novel construction of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, numbers being used to indicate the several parts of the device.

The drawing is a perspective of my improved hammer complete, the blades being removed at one end and shown in position at the other.

1 denotes the body of the hammer, 2 the hole to receive the handle, and 3 openings at opposite ends of the body to receive the blades 4.

5 denotes holes extending entirely through the body from side to side, and 6 slots extending from the bottoms of openings 3 into said holes, the object of these holes and slots being to give the side pieces, if, sufficient spring to enable them to grasp and hold the blades firmly when tightened up, and to spring back sufiiciently so that they may be readily taken out when loosened up.

The blades may be held in position in any suitable manner. I preferably, however, provide holes 8 through the side pieces, in line with each other, which also register with holes (not shown) through the bases of the blades, bolts 9 being passed through the opposite side pieces and the blades and tightened up by nuts in the usual manner.

Hereto fore the changing of the blades in this class of hammers has been a matter of considerable trouble and inconvenience, owing to the fact that the body of the hammer was made in two or three parts. My improved construc tion, however, enables me to make the body of the hammer and the side pieces from one piece of metal, and at the same time to retain ample spring in the side pieces. I thus produce a much neaterlooking hammer, while at the same time I cheapen the construction and greatly simplify the mode of operation.

It will of course be understood that the details of construction may be considerably varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim The body having blade-openings 3, holes 5, and slot 6, leading from the base of said openings to said holes, in combination with a series of blades and bolts, 9, whereby said blades are clamped in the openings.
