SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,919. dated February 15, 1887.
Application filed May 27, 1886. Serial No. 208,457. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNIST G. GOSGH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport, in the county of Barry and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vent-Stoppers for. Pumps, &c and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to vent-stopper attachments for drive-well tubes; and it consists in the improved devices hereinafter described and set forth, whereby I am enabled to reduce the volume of water in a well-tube below the freezing-point when desired.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of a well-tube having my improvements applied thereto, and
representing the latter in a normal position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in' section, and representing the device in the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the vent-stopper away from the vent in the well-tube and the spring-rod out of engagement with the pawl on the platform.
A refers to a well-tube, at the upper end of which islocated the platform B, which is provided with a recess, upon one side of which is located a rigid dog or catch, (4. Upon the tube A is mounted a clamp consisting of two sections, 12 b, the rear end of which terminates in a vertical perforated eye, 0 c, which are pivotally connected to each other by a pintle, d. The front ends of the sections b b are bent parallel with each other and perforated for the passageof a transverse pivot-pin, 6, upon which is pivotally mounted the central portion of a bell-crank lever, O. The vertical portion of the bell-crank lever 0, below the pivot e, terminates in a flattened end,f, carrying on one face a cushion or packing, g, of any suit able yielding substance, the face of which is curved to coincide with the curved face of the tube A adjacent.v The other portion of the bell-crank lever terminates at its end in a horizontal perforated eye, to which is connected,
by apivot-pin, h, the lower end of an operate ing-rod, D, the upper end of which is formed into an eye or handle, E, and below which said rod is notched to engage the dog a. The pipe A is provided at its lower part with a perforation, t', designed to be closed or covered by the cushion g on the bellcrank lever.
In cold weather, when it is desired to reduce the volume of water in the well-tube A below the freezing-point, the rod D is disengaged from-the pawl a and drawn upward, which results in moving the bell-crank lever 0 upon its pivot and throwing the lever end of the same, with the cushion g, away from the welltube A, so as to uncover the opening z' therein. The water in the well-tube will then only attain a level to the point indicated by theopening 1', which, as has been before stated, is below the freezing-point.
The rod D is made of a spring-bar of metal, the lower end thereof being given a half-turn, so that the lower end will be bent so as to be on a line with the end of the bell-crank lever, so that the pivot-pin it can pass through the fiat portion thereof, the center portion of said spring-rod being formed so that it will have a spring movement from and to the well-tube when the same is depressed, so as to hold the lower end of the bell-crank lever securely and with a spring-pressure over the vent. The upper portion of the rod D is also given a half-turn, so that it may pass through the slot in the platform and the notch on the inner side of the upper end engage with the rigid pawl when said operating-rod is forced downwardly and bent upwardly.
By constructing the clamp, as hereinbefore described, so that the two sections will be pivotally secured to each other at one end by a pivot pin or bolt, 6, said clamp, while carrying the bell-crank lever, may be adjustedon the well-tube, and when adjusted to the proper position can be rigidly clamped thereon by simply tightening the bolt 0. By this construction, the parts being all secured to each other, there is noliabilityof the parts becoming disconnected, so that they would be liable to be disengaged from the well-tube when adjusting the same.
I am aware that it has been proposed to provide a well-tube with a vent-stopper which is pivotally attached the 'eto and providing 7 means for moving said ventstopper, the same extending above the platform, and I do not claim such construction, broadly.
It will be readily noted that the engagement of the rod D with the pawl is such as to hold the bell-crank lever rigidlyin the position indicated in the figures of the drawings, so that the pressure of the water in the well-tube will not result in the displacement of the cushion 9.
IO As will be understood, the attachment is of great importance in connection with welltubes, and is simple and durable in construction and readily applied.
I claim- I I5 1. The combination, with the tube A, of a clamp attached thereto above the vent-opening so as to encircle the well-tube, a bell-crank 1 lever provided at its lower end with a suitable packing, and a spring-rod provided with a flat 2o central portion attached to the outer end of said bell-crank lever, said spring-rod extending above the platform and provided with means for engaging with said platform, so that said rod will exert a spring-pressureupon the bell-crank lever, substantially as shown, and
for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a vent-stopper for well-tubes, of a bell-cranklever and operating-rod, a clamp consisting of two sections which are hinged to each other, the free ends of said clamp being bent outwardly, and a bolt for clamping the parts upon each other, said bolt also serving as a pivot for the bell-crank lever, substantially as shown.
3. In combination with a vent-stopper for well-tubes, a clamp consisting of two sections which are pivotally secured to each other, the opposite ends of said pivoted sections extending outwardly from the well-tube and parallel the platform with a notch, a platform securely attached to the well-tube and provided with an opening through which the upper end of the spring-rod passes, and a rigid dog, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
