Cl. 252-49.6 8 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Lubricating oil composition having penetrating, residual lubricating properties, and release characteristics is obtained by mixing 4095% of hydrocarbon carrier (e.g mixture of naphtha and kerosene), -40% of an alkyl ester of a carboxylic acid containing about 8-24 carbon atoms, and about 0.1% of dialkyl polysiloxane.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Lubricating compositions having good penetrating characteristics are useful for many purposes. They are especially useful to release seized, rusted, or otherwise frozen nuts, bolts, shafts, etc. Machinery containing such frozen parts can be placed in workable condition by contacting the frozen part with penetrating oil for a limited period of time and then working the frozen part to release it. Many otherwise unusable and discarded pieces of machinery can be renovated by effectively using pentration oils. Also, relatively inaccessible machine parts can be lubricated by penetrating oils,
Applicant has discovered a new composition which is useful as a penetrating oil and which is especially useful to release frozen machinery parts. This composition is effected by dissolving an alkyl ester and a dialkylpolysiloxane in a hydrocarbon carrier.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The hydrocarbon carrier or penetrator useful in the lubricating oil composition of this invention preferably has a partial pressure of less than about 80 mm. of Hg at 23 C. This can be a mixture of 2 or more hydrocarbon components. Examples of useful carriers include mineral spirits (also known as petroleum naphtha), kerosene, light distillates, benzene, toluene, stoddard solvent and cyclohexane. Examples of percent composition of the hydrocarbon carrier within the lubrication composition can be within the range of from about 40 to about 95% and more preferably from about 65% to about 85%. More preferably, the hydrocarbon carrier is a blend of kerosene and mineral spirits in amounts ranging from about 5 to about 20% kerosene and from about 45% to about 90% naphtha.
The alkyl ester of the carboxylic acid containing from about 8 to about 24 carbon atoms can be present in the lubricating composition within the range of from about 5 to about 40%. Most preferably, this component is at concentration range of from about 10 to about 30%. Examples of the alkyl esters of carboxylic acids include those defined by the formula:
wherein R contains from about 8 to about 24 carbon atoms (can be aliphatic carbon atoms or can contain olefinic groupings), and R is an aliphatic alkyl grouping containing from about 1 to about 4 carbon atoms. Examples of alkyl esters of carboxylic acids include butyl laurate, propyl myristate, ethyl palmitate, ethyl stearate, ethyl oleate, ethyl linoliate, ethyl linolenate, methyl stearate, methyl oleate and methyl palmitate.
3,578,596 Patented May 11, 1971 The dialkylpolysiloxane can be present in amounts ranging from about 0.1% to about 10% and preferably from about 0.5% to about 3%. Larger amounts can be present, however, the economics may be adversely affected. Examples of useful dialkylpolysiloxanes include dimethylpolysiloxane, diethylpolysiloxane, dipropylpolysiloxane, and dibutylpolysiloxane. The dialkylpolysiloxaues useful in this invention are silicone liquids and in general can be identified by the organo siloxane structure:
wherein R can be methyl, ethyl, propyl, or butyl.
In addition, the lubricating composition can contain other additives such as bactericides, corrosion and scale inhibitors, oxidation inhibitors, etc. The dialkylpolysiloxane and alkyl esters of the earboxylic acids are commonly known as release agents and residual lubricants.
Components within the lubricating composition can be of character which will impart to the lubricating oil composition a viscosity which is readily fluid at ambient temperature, preferably less than 15 cps. at ambient temperature and most preferably about 0.5 to about 1.0 cp. at 23C. Higher viscosities are also useful, however, at these high viscosities, the penetrating effect of the lubricating composition is adversely affected.
The following example is presented to specifically illustrate working embodiments of the invention. This example is not intended to limit the invention, but, it is intended that all equivalents obvious to those skilled in the art be interpreted within the scope of the invention as defined in the specification and appended claims. Unless otherwise specified, percents are based on volume.
Example 1 A lubricating composition having good penetrating and release characteristics is effected by mixing:
( 1) 69% mineral spirits (petroleum naphtha), (2) 10% kerosene,
(3) 20% methyloleate, and
(4) 1% dimethylpolysiloxane.
The dimethylpolysiloxane is obtained from Dow Chemical Company under the trade name of Dow Corning 200 Fluid and has a viscosity of about 50 cs. at 25 C. The composition was applied to the following pieces of frozen machinery and was etfective in releasing or freeing the frozen parts:
(1) A stainless steel pipe in a A" stainless steel pipe coupling.
(2) A 400 series stainless steel plug corroded with iodine in a stainless steel plate.
(3) Carbon steel nut oxidized on a carbon steel bolt.
(4) Rust or oxidized surface on a flat carbon steel plate was removed by rubbing with steel wool the surface coated with the above composition.
(5) A carbon steel shaft frozen in the races of an electrical motor.
What is claimed is:
1. A lubricating oil composition having good penetrating and release characteristics, the composition containmg:
(1) from about 40 to about 95 of hydrocarbon carrier having a partial pressure of less than about mm. of Hg at 23 C.,
3 (2) from about to about 40% of alkyl ester of a carboxylic acid of the formula:
R1C-OR2 V wherein R contains from about 8 to about 24 carbon atoms and R is an alkyl grouping containing from about 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, and
(3) from about 0.1% to about of dialkylpolysiloxane wherein the alkyl grouping contains from about 1 to about 4 aliphatic carbon atoms.
2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the hydrocarbon carrier is a mixture of petroleum naphtha and kerosene.
3. The composition of claim 1 wherein the alkyl ester of the carboxylic acid is ethyl oleate.
4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the dialkylpolysiloxane is dimethylpolysiloxane.
5. Lubricating oil composition having good penetrating and release characteristics, the composition comprised of:
(1) from about 45% to about 85% of petroleum naphtha,
(2) from about 5% to about 30% of kerosene,
(3) from about 5 to about 40% of alkyl ester of a car boxylic acid of the formula 4 (4) from about 0.1% to about 10% of dialkylpolysiloxane wherein the alkyl grouping contains from about 1 to about 5 aliphatic carbon atoms. 6. Lubricating composition of claim 5 wherein the alkyl ester of the carboxylic acid is methyloleate.
7. Lubricating composition of claim 5 wherein the dialkylpolysiloxane is dimethylpolysiloxane.
8. Lubricating oil composition having good penetrating and release characteristics comprised of:
