BORST 8 BORST DEVICE FOR HAND KNITTING This invention relates to a knitting device and has particular reference to a device for use in knitting by hand.
An object of the invention is the provision of a hand knitting device by use of which articles may be made with difierent kinds of stitches such as plain or garter stitch, or purling or stockinette stitch, or combinations thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a knitting device which is adapted to be held in one hand and the yarn held in the other hand so as to conveniently and expeditiously apply the yarn to the device in knitting.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hand knitting device which can be readily used by inexperienced persons,'by invalids and by children and which has therapeutic value by the manipulation of the hand and fingers in the use of the device in knitting.
Still another object in view is a device having a series of yam-receiving members which are adapted to be moved to an open relation for receiving the yarn, to a closed relation for forming loops in the yarn and to another open relation for moving the loops so formed from the yam-receiving members.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated.
In the drawings:
FIG. I is an enlarged top plan view of a knitting device embodying one form of the invention;
FIG. ,2 is an end view thereof showing one of the yarnreceiving members in open relation on one side;
FIG. 3 is a similar view showing the yam-receiving member in closed relation;
FIG. 4 is a similar view showing the yam-receiving member in open relation on the side opposite that shown in FIG. 2;
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary view showing the means for releasably detaining the yarn-receiving members in closed relation;
FIGS. 6, 7, 8 and 9 are views showing successive steps in knitting with one type of stitch in the use of the device;
FIG. 10 is a fragmentary view illustrating another form of knitting device embodying the invention;
FIG. 11 is a side view of the device shown in FIG. I0; and
FIG. 12 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on line12-12 ofFIG. 11.
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to the form of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 9 thereof, the device includes a bar 10 to which a series of posts 11 are affixed to project outwardly on one side thereof and which are equally spaced apart along the bar in aligned relation.'The bar 10 is of any desired length having any desired number of posts 11. In the drawings, the parts of the device are greatly enlarged and certain of the parts are broken away for convenience in illustration. Each of the posts 11 is provided with a yam-receiving member such as a loop or ringlike member 12 having an opening 13 between the confronting ends 14 and 15 thereof. The yam-receiving members 12 are disposed in parallel ratios and are mounted on the posts respectively for movement with reference to the posts for optionally disposing said members with the openings 13 providing passageways above and below the posts respectively for admitting the yarn into said members and for removing loops of the yarn therefrom. As illustrated, the posts 11 are formed with bores 16 adjacent the tapered ends 17 thereof for snugly and slidably receiving the confronting ends 14 and 15 of the members 12 which are movable in arcuate paths and are provided with knobs 18 and 19 adapted to limit the inward movement of said ends in the bores 16. Thus, the members 12 are movable to the positions shown in FIG. 2 in which the passageways are located above the post respectively and are movable to the position shown in FIG. 3 in which the openings 13 are closed by the posts respectively and said members are also movable to the position shown in FIG. 4 in which passageways are provided below the posts respectively.
The members 12 are formed with inwardly projecting enadapted to be engaged by the ends 22 of the posts so as to releaseably release the members 12 in the closed relation shown in FIG. 3 of the drawings. A projection 23 is provided on each of the members 12 adapted to be engaged by the hand or finger or article having a straight edge for simultaneously moving the members 12.
In use, the bar 10 is held in one hand with the posts 11 projecting toward the other hand which feeds the yarn from the,
ball A onto the posts and through the passageways. In the beginning, a loop B of yarn is cast on in the usual manner on each of the posts 11 and the bar 10 is inverted end to end and a course C of yarn is laid upon the several posts as shown in FIG. 6 of the drawings with the yam-receiving members 12 in closed relation. The members 12 are then moved to the open position shown in FIG. 2 and the course C of yarn is moved into the members 12 as shown in FIG. 7. The yarn-receiving members 12 are then moved to the closed positions shown in FIG. 3 and the course C of yarn slaekened to provide loops D therein between adjacent members 12, after which the loops B on the posts are moved outwardly and over the members 12 so as to engage over the loops D as shown in FIG. 8. The members 12 are then moved to the open position shown in FIG. 2 and are again inverted end to end and the loops D moved through the openings and onto the posts. Another course of yarn E, the same as course C is then laid onto the posts 11 as shown in FIG. 9, the loops D now being the same as the first loops B. The foregoing steps are repeated to continue the .knitting so as to form additional loops D with each repetition of the said steps.
In the form of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 10 to 12 inclusive of the drawings, the device includes a bar 25 having posts 26 affixed thereto and on which yarn-receiving members 27 are movably mounted as on the previous form of the invention. In this form of the invention, the posts 26 are formed with spider arms 28 at the ends thereof which have grooved end edges 29 in which the members 27 are arcuately slidable. The members 27 are of curvilinear formation having oppositely disposed confronting ends 30 and 31 which are spaced apart to provide openings 32 therebetween respectively as shown in FIG. 11 of the drawings. The posts 26 have openings 33 and 34 in which the ends 30 and 31 engage respectively for movement of the members 27 to the positions shown in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4 in the previously described form of the invention. A web 35 is arranged between the openings 33 and 34 in each of the posts 26 which webs provide stops for limiting the movement of the members 27'respectively. The members 27 also have projections 36 similar to the projections 23 in the previously described formfor facilitating the movement of the members 27. In order to releasably retain the members 27 in the closed position shown in FIG. 3 of previously described form, detents 37 are provided between the members 27 and the posts 26 medially of the spider arms 28.
This form is adapted to be used in knitting in a manner similar to the manner of use of the previously described form of the invention. It is to be understood, however, that the members 27 loosely fit the grooved end edges 29 of the spider arms 28 to permit of the free movement of the yarn therebetween.
While the preferred forms of the invention have been shown and described herein, it is to be understood that the invention is not so limited but shall cover and include any and all modifications of the invention which fall within the preview thereof.
I claim:
