P TENT nssidnon TO THE Bosron woven HOSE COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASs-Afifill l fil si a KN EADER FOR INDIA-RUBBER;
srncrrrca'rrou forming part of-Letters Patent No, semen. dated February 15, last. Application filed July crises. serial home. (No mod m To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ltonna'rfiownn, of- Cambridgeport, county of Middlcsex, and- State of Massachusetts, haveinvented an Improvbment in 'Kneaders forIndia-Rubber, &c., of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like arts. to p This invent-ion has for itsobject to provide aself-feeding apparatus to be used in reducing or kneading su bstauces. My invention has for its more particular object to provide "a continuously-operating l5 kneader to be used in kneading or working up guttapercha or india-rubber. k x Prior to my invention gutta-perchaer-iiidm rubber has been fed between rollers, which crush or reduce the material placed between :0 them, the said material falling from between the rollers upon the floor or into asuitable re:
cepta'cle, from whence it is taken by a work man and again placed between the said rollers. My present invention has for its object to provide a self feeding apparatus, and thus *make the process of kneading india-rubber or other material continuous, thereby dispensing with the constant services of a workman to feed the material into the apparatus. 0 My invention consists, essentially, of feedrollers, betweenwhich the gutta-percha, india rubber, or other material is passed, combined with an endless belt to receive the said material from the rollers and feed it again into the bite 'of the said rollers, as will be described.
My invention also consists of feed-rollers, between which the gutta-peroha or likematerial is passed,and an endless belt to receive the said material from the rollers and feed itagain 0 into the bite of the said rollers, combined with a cleaner to remove particles of material adboring to the endless belt.
Figure lis a vertical transverse section of my' improved S81 f-fecding kueader, the section being taken on line as w, --Fig. 2;and Fig. 2, a
top or plan view of Fig. 1. l
The sides A A, unitedby cross braces or rods a, provided with usual nuts, a, constitute a supporting-frame for the apparatus. Each side A A is provided with alongitudinal slot, a, (see dotted lines, Fig. 1,) the said slot re- -sha l't b, the rollers b b through said pinion ing against the roller if, the said. endless belt -is carried upon the said belt, between it and the ceiving within it boxes I) b, which form joiir= nal-bearings for shafts bllf, respectively, the said shafts having mounted thereon rollers-b bf. The shaft b at one side of the appalhtlis has mounted 'upon it a belt=plilley, o, ands grooved pulley, *o', and at the opposite side of the apparatus the said shaft has neon-ten on it a pinioino", in meshfiitllh .Ear, a, on the 66 and gear rotating in opposite directions.
Each side AA, as herein shown, has as cured to its top by screws e?,-.a fender, o, having its sides shaped/asshown in Fig. 1, to conform to gu set-inner, of the rollers b b 5 thesaidfenurs and rollers forming ahopper,
. hits which the guttaperellli or indie-rubber a The guttaperchti or indiarnbher i's first fed into the hopper referred to by the workman, and is carried between the rollers. flhe iil'liia rubber as it passes from the rollers falls upon all-endless belt, d, passedoveraroller, d below and at the front end of the apparatus, the said roller being supportedjin bearings (1, attached to the sides A A, the said bearings bei g herein shown as bars provided with a SQries of notches, d in one of which the joiiiffialsbf the said roller rest. The endless belt d is can ried below the rollers b bione sheet or fold 8c being passed around a stationary cross-bar or roller, d", secured to the sides AA atthe rear of the apparatus, the other sheet or fold pressbeing then passed over a roller, d, having its hearings in arms (1, the said arms being pivoted or hinged, as at d", to the sides A A; 1
In operation the rollers b b are rotated, as. indicated by arrows 12, Fig; 1, bye to n the pulley c,the said belt being driven I. re rotation of a main or counter shaft, or in other well-k uown manner. The gutta-pereha or inie-rubber or other material, in a crude state, is placed by the workman in the hopper -referred to, where it is bitten or seized by the "rollers b b and carried betweenthem, it falling upon the upper fold of theendlessbelt d as it passes from the rollers. As the gutta-pcrolia falls from the rollers upon the endless belt d it roller bf, to the top of the said roller, the belt moving in the direction indicated by arrow 20, Fig l. As the endless belt passes over the roller d in the direction indicated by arrow 15 any particles of .gutta percha which might adhere thereto are removed therefrom by 'a. cleaner 0, shown as a brush revolving in the same direction as the roller (if, as indicated by arrow 16, the guttwpercha brought up by the'endless belt'and' the particles re: moved therefrom by the said cleaner being be again passed between said rollers, the ac- ,iion of the said rollers upon the gutta-peroha' or other like material heingcontinued until the said material has been kneaded into a soft and pliable mass. The shaft e of the cleaner which removes the particles of material aid-- hering to the belt has its bearings, as shown,
' on top of the sides A A, and issecured in po- 41,) the endless jhel-tfldat such time hanging ,loosel below the rollers b b, asshown by .dotte lines.
The bearings d forthe roller d", being notched, permit the said roller to be adj nsted inits hearings to take up any slack in the endless belt which might arise after the said I claim r '1. In an apparatus for kneading gutta-percha, indie-rubber, and like material, feed-rod er's between which the materialis passed, combined with an endless belt to receive the said material frointherollers, arranged across the space between the said rollers and extended under and partially about one of the said rollers, substantially as described, whereby it again returned to the bite of the said rollers at their receiving side, to be again acted upon by the said rollers, as and for the purpose set ort l. I
2. In an apparatus for kneading gutta-pereha, indie-rubber, and like material, feed-rollers'between which the material is passed; an endless beltto receive the said material from the rollers, arranged across the space between the said rollers and extended under'and partially about one of the said rollers, substam tially as described, whereby the material deto the bite of thesaid rollers at their receiving side, to be again acted upon by the said roll- 'ers', combined wit-ha cleaner to remove par ticles of material fronrthe endless belt, substantially as described. i y In testimony whereof Ihave signed myname to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses ROBERT COWEN.
