SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,608, dated February 15, 1887. Application filed November 8, 1886. Serial No. 218,304. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, -D. RANDOLPH KINYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raritan, in the county of Somerset, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Friction-Clutches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlngs.
The object of my invention is to provide a friction clutch which shall present a large frictional surface at such points as shall give the greatest leverage and require a relatively slight movement of the principal elements involved, and will have peculiar means for the prompt adjustment of the parts.
The mechanism employed is an improvement upon the Patent N 0. 281,700, granted to me July 24, 1883, and the construction and operation of said improvement Will be hereinafter described, and the novel features thereof specifically set forth in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- 1 Figure 1 is a side elevation of africtionclutch constructed in accordance with my invention. A represents a shaft, which may be designated as the driving-shaft, and B a separate shaft, herein designated as the driven shaft. To the driving-shaft is keyed, or otherwise secured so as to rotate therewith, a pulley, O, which constitutes one of the principal elements of the clutch. To the driven shaft B is, in like manner, secured a disk, D, which is provided with lugs having slots d, through which bolts e pass loosely, each be ing provided with ashoulder, (as stated in my Patent No. 281,700,) against which its nut abuts, to prevent binding lengthwise in the slots. The bolts serve to connect to the disk D two half-rings, E, in such a manner that they may move radially in and out upon the disk, and thus be caused to bear upon or be held away from the periphery of the pulley 0. Each of the half-rings is provided with two lugs, c each pair of lugs being bored to receive a shaft, F, having its ends f turned of smaller diameter and eccentrically to the body of said shaft.
Upon the ends f of the shafts F are journaled the links f, that are longitudinally bored and screw'tapped to receive the ends of the I bolts f that unite said links. These bolts have a right-hand screw-thread out on one end, and a left-hand screw-thread on the opposite end, and squared at f half-Way of their length, to take a wrench, so that the links f can be promptly drawn toward each other, and conseq uently any undue looseness of the halfrings, occasioned by wear or otherwise, can be easily taken up. A lever, F, projects from each eccentric shaft F, and is connected by a link, G, to the sliding collar H, mounted on the shaft B. Said collar is annularly grooved, as shown, for the reception of any well-known operating-lever.
The operation isas follows: Motion being given to the'shaft A is conveyed to the pulley 0, fixed thereon; and if the collar H is moved toward the disk D the outer ends of the levers F are forced apart, and the eccentric shafts F rotated, and as the eccentric ends of said shafts are retained in pairs at regulable distances apart by the bolts f the two half-rings are brought toward each other and firmly against the periphery of the pulley O, and by the friction of these parts upon each other the motion is conveyed to the disk D and the shaft B to which it is affixed. By this construction a slight movement is required of the half-rings, and hence I am enabled to employ the limited but very powerful movement of eccentric clamping devices, as F, and the surface-contact is of such a nature and form as to create great friction without undue strains on the parts.
If desired, the shaft A may be continuous, in which case the disk D would be loosely mounted thereon, and provided with or connected to any suitable belt-pulley to drive any desired mechanism.
Having now fully described my invention, I claimv 1. In a friction-clutch, a driving-shaft and a driven shaft, a pulley, a disk carrying halfmo ends of the eccentric shafts with bolts provided with right and left hand screws upon their ends, substantially as and for the purpose described. 15
