SOFA-BED.
PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,530, dated February 8, 1887.v
Application filed June 26, 1886. Serial No. 206,286. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F.. Knnusn, of the city of Indianapoliscountyof Marion, and State-of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa- Beds, of
which the following is a specification. The object of my said invention is to vp roduce a sociable or double-ended sofa which shall embody a bed and take the place of a 1o folding or bed lounge, and which will possess various improvements and advantages 4more particularly described hereinafter, and set forth in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
which are made a part hereof, and on which/ similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure lis aperspective view of a sociable and surrounding shelving embodying'my said invention when the same is folded upland 2o the folding part in use as a sociable or sofa;
Fig. 2, a similar view when the sociable is un- 4 folded and in position for use as a bed; Fig.
A 3, a lcentral vertical section through Fig. l,
.Y showing the relative position of the parts e5 when in that position; Fig. 4, adet-ail sectional view of the adjacent parts of the mattress and frame-work, showing the means by which they are connected; Fig. 5, a detail sectional view of the latch'and catch by which 3o the two frames of the sofa are secured together when folded up; Fig. 6, a side elevation of the peculiar hinge which I use to connect the folding frames together, and fragments of said frames to which said hinges are connected as 3 5 they appear when folded up, the unfolded plosition being shown by means of dotted lines;
Fig. .7, a perspective View of said hinge detached; Fig. 8, a rear side elevation of the upper portion of one of the folding legs; and
,aro Fig. 9 a sectional View thereof, looking toward the left from the dotted line 9 9 in Fig. 8.
In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the surrounding shelving, framework, or mantel; B, the lower frame portion `1,5 of the sociable; C, the upper frame portion;
D, the sociableback, and E the mattress.
The frame, mantel, or shelving A is secured permanently in position, and its character is fully illustrated by the drawings. Its central 5o portion is left vacant to receive the mattress and back of the sociable when said sociable is folded up, as it usually is during the day-time, and as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. It is usually set against the wall of the room, and allowed to remain there permanently.
The sociable properconsists of the frames B and G and back D. The frame B rests on the iioor, as usual, and is a simple framework of the required size provided with the customary legs. The frame C is hinged to the frame B by the three-part hinges'c, c2, and c3, and is held in position when closed by the latch O3, engaging with the catch Bion the frame B. When opened, this frame C rests on the legs O', which support it, so that the frames shall not come in contact with the floor. These legs are pivoted legs, each mounted on a pivot, c, which connects said leg G and a washer, c5,
lsaid pivot passing through a slot in a bracket,
G2, Vsecured to the frame C, and being itself 7o preferably surrounded by a projection, c, on said leg, (see Fig. 9,) with which the sides of the slot in said bracket come in immediate contact. Said bracket Cz is also provided with a curved slot, c, and a notch extendsinwardly therefrom at one end, with which a projection, c7, on the leg may engage when said leg is turned down imposition for the frame to rest upon it, as shown in Fig. 2. When said frame C is folded up, said leg is pulled out somewhat, disengaging said projection from said notch, and the leg is turned around until it will t vdownbehind said frame, and thusbe concealed when saidl frame is folded up, as shown in Fig. l.
The back D is hinged to the lower frame, B, by ordinary hinges d, and when the frame' O is unfolded is adapted to be folded down flat onto said frames B and G, as shown in Fig. 2.
The mattress E, as before described, is secured to the rear side of the back D and moves with said back as said back is moved on its hinges. To the sides of said mattress are secured folding portions E, which may be supported by slotted and serrated supports e, engaging with proper catches,e,on the mattressframe. vThese parts, when the device is folded up, fold down alongside said mattress, but when unfolded are brought up in the position shown in Fig. 2, and serve as either extensions or sides to the mattress, as desired. When the structure is in folded-up position, this IOO mattress entends above and below the back D,
asshown most plainly in Fig. 3, and when folded down it forms a flat even surface suitable for a bed, as best shown in Fig. 2. Said mattress, and through it the frame of the sociable or sofa, is secured to the frame or mantel A by means of a double hinge or pivoted strap, E2, the two parts of which are connected together by a pivot, c, and the ends of which are connected to said mattress and said framework, respectively, by the pivots e'z c. 'Ihe operation is, when the back carrying the mattress is raised up, that said double strap will fold together, thus not only permitting t-he edge of the mattress to drop down, but also to draw it back into place inside said frame A. As will be readily understood, webbing or other straps might take the place of these hinged or pivoted metal straps.
Referring again to the hinges c c'2 c, by which the frames B and C are secu red together, it will be noticed that they are so formed that when the frames are unfolded the three parts form three sides of asquare, the first and third of which are secured directly to said frames, and the second of which connects said first and third parts in such a manner as to leave no projection beyond the frame-work, said second part being so formed as when the folding up is completed to be withdrawn within the line of the frame-work and thus avoid the proj ection on the front side of the structure, which other hinges have occasioned. These hinges, because of the peculiar construction of the central part, ci, prevent any of the parts from folding beyond the positions desired. In unfolding,the edges of the sides 03,01' equivalent projections, come in contact with the faces of the parts c and c (see dotted lines in Fig. G) and hold the frames in substantially a right line. In folding up, the thickened central portion, e, of this central part, c2, will come in contact with the frame portions and thus bring the ends of said frame portions to which said hinges are attached directly in line, thus keeping the front portions of the two frames even, as will be readily understood by an examination of the drawings.
rIhe latch C and catch B2 are secured, respectively, to the adjacent rear portions of the frames C and B. Said latch CP is mounted in a socket, C, on the projection cwin said socket, and is held into engagement with the catch B2 by a spring, c, At an appropriate point on the frame C, near said socket, is an eye, G5, and a cord, C, secured at one end to the latch Cg and at the other end to said frame C, passes through said eye, and by pulling said cord said latch will be disengaged from the catch and the frame C permitted to be swung down. Vhen this disengagement is effected,a further pulling on the cord C, which, as before stated, is rigidly secured to the frame C, will open said frame C without any furtherstrain on the latch C.
I am aware that a portion of the mattress has before been mounted on the rcarpsidc of a folding back in the manufacture of sofa-beds, the other portion being mounted on the folding part of the sofa-frame, and arranged so that the two parts will connect and form abcd when the sofa is opened and said back turned down. I therefore limit myself to the construction shown herein, as set forth in the claims.
I am also aware that it is common to connect a cord or strap to the catch which secures the two parts of the frame together and eX- tend the same out for the purpose of providing a convenient means for releasing said catch but I am not aware that one end of said cord or strap has heretofore been connected to the frame, as herein shown, and for the purpose set forth.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the frame A, per1na nently secured in position and formed with a recess in'its front side, the frames B and C of the bed or sofa hinged together, the back D, hinged to the frame B, and the mattress E, mounted on the rear side of said back D and hinged to the frame A by the double-jointed hinges E, and said hinges, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the frame A, secured permanently in position,as described,and having a recess formed in its front side to receive the hinged mattress and frame on which it`is mounted, the framesB and C, hinged together, t-he back D, hinged to the rear edge of said frame B, the mattress E, mounted'on the rear lOO side of said back D, the lower edge of which extends down below the lower edge of said back, and the doublejointed hinges El, connecting said mattress to the edges of the recess in the frame A, ,whereby as said mattress is turned down it is also extended out of the recess, and as it is turned up it is drawn down and into its place, all substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination, with the frames B and C, hingedl together, of the catch B, secured to one, and the latch C, pivoted in the socket C in the other, and the cord C", connected at lone end to said latch and secured at the other end to said frame C, whereby said latch may be disengaged from said catch by pulling on one end of said cord and the frame be opened by pulling from the other end, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 16th day of June,4A. D. 1886.
