SPARK-ARRESTER.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN OoLUMBUs AL- BREOHT, of Columbus, in the county of Muscogee and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Spark-Arrester, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the spark-arresters for which Letters Patent No. 295,322, dated March 18, 1884, and N 0. 342,556, dated March 25, I886, were granted to me;
The invention consists of means for separating effectively the smoke from the sparks and returning the latter to the firebox.
The invention also consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure I is a vertical central cross-section of my improvement. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the platform supporting the cone. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section of my improvement on the line or a; of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of the cone. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of my improvement ports the smoke stack B and the draft-pipe O, on the line 22 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is an under side view of the saddle.
The saddleAis attached to the boiler of the locomotive in any suitable manner, and supwhich latter is held in place on its top by the platform D, secured to the flaring shell B of the smoke-stack B. The saddle A is provided with the side passages. A, having slanting bottoms, which open at A into the spark-fines E, leading to the firebox of the boiler, and arranged either inside or outside of the boiler, as desired. v
The platform D supports the cone F, into which opens centrally the draft-pipe O. The cone F has in its center and underneath it the inverted cone a, and is also provided with the curved wings or volutes 12, secured to and extending from the lower surface of the cone to the platform D in a manner similar to that shown in Letters Patent No. 295,322, but having no scroll -bends or any .openings below them through the platform D.

The cone F is also provided with two sparkpockets, 0, each having an upper interior mouth, (Z, facing toward the center of the cone, and adapted to admit the sparks and cinders.
' The pockets 0 open into the pipes G, attached to the platform D, and extending downward into the side passages, A, of the saddle A.
The platform D is provided with the side lugs, D, attached to angleirons D, secured to the flaring shell B. A space, H, is thus formed between the outer edge of the said platform Dand the shell B. The cone F is surrounded by a sleeve, 1, attached to the platform D, and forming a space, J, between the sleeve and the shell B. The upper end of the sleeve I supports a conical lining, K, which forms a space, L, between the said lining K and the cap B of the smoke-stack B, and has also an annular opening, M, at its upper end.
To the top of the cap B is secured a cylindrical sleeve, N, which extends downward below the level of the upper edge of the sleeve J.
The operation is as follows: WVhen the en gine is at rest, thesmoke passing upward from the draft-pipe moves outward between the volutes b into the space formed between the cone and the sleeve I, and from there passes upward through the cylindrical sleeveN into the open air. When the engine is at work, a part of the cinders and smoke, passing together upward from the draft-pipe, are driven by the exhaust of the engine into the sparkpockets 0, from which they pass into the pipes G Grand into the side passages, A, of-the saddle A, and are forced by the exhaust into the spark-fines E and back into the fire-box. The balance of the smoke and cinders is arrested and deflected by the volutes b, and receives a whirling motion, so that a part of the cinders are thrown outward by centrifugal force and downward by the curved rim of the cone, and through the opening or space H into the space 0 below the platform-D, from which they drop into the side passages, A, 'of the saddle A. The rest of the cinders which are not deflected are carried upward by the force of the exhaust into the annular space between the cylindrical sleeve N and the conical lining K and pass through the opening M into the space formed between the cap 13* of the smoke-stack and the said conical lining K, and thence drop downward into the space J and pass through the opening H into the lower part of the space 0 below the platform D. As part of the exhaust of the engine passes through the pipes G, it creates a suction 'in the saddlepassages A, and thus draws into the said passages all the cinders which have been discharged into the space 0, as above described, and forces them along with those which come down through the pipes G into the spark-fines E and returns the same into the fire-box. The smoke, on account of being lighter than the cinders, separates from the latter and passes out into the air through the cylindrical sleeve N. The platform not only supports the cone F, but also shields the sparks and cinders in the space 0 from direct impact of the exhaust, thus preventing the cinders in the said space from being stirred up.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent- 1. In a spark-arrester, the combination, with a draft-pipe, of a conehaving curved volutes and in its center and underneath itan inverted cone, and also provided with spark-pockets, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a spark-arrester, the combination, with a draft-pipe, of a cone having in its center and underneath it an inverted cone, and being provided with curved volutes and spark pockets, and pipes leading from the said pockets to the saddle, substantially as shown and described.
3. In aspark'arrcster, the combination,\vith a saddle and a draft-pipe, of a cone havingin its center and underneath it an inverted cone provided with curved volutes, and sparkpockets and pipes leading from the said pockets to the said saddle, substantially as shown and described.
4:. In a spark-arrester, the saddle A, the smoke-stack B, and the draft-pipe G, in combination with the platform D, attached to the smoke-stack B and forming the space H, the cone F, supported on the said platform D, and the annular sleeve I, attached to the said platform, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a spark-arrester, the saddle A, the smoke-stack B, and the draft-pipe G, in combination with the platform D, attached by lugs to the said smoke-stack B and forming the space H, the cone F, supported by the said platform, and the pipes G, leading from the said cone into the side passages, A, of the saddle A, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a spark -arrester, the saddle A, the smoke-stack I3, and the draft-pipe C, in combination with the platform D, supported by the said s'mokestack B and forming the space H, the cone F, supported on the said platform D, the pipes-G, leading from the said cone to the saddle A, the sleeve Lsu rroun ding the said couch and attached to the platform D, the conical lining K, supported by the said sleeve I, and the cylindrical sleeve N, extending downward from the cap of the smoke-stack, substantially as shown and described.
