To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ROBERT E. TIGHENOR and PHILETUS WALKER, both of Hennin'g, in the county of Otter Tail and the State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Stump-Puller, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved stump-puller which is durable and effective in operation.
The invention consists of compound levers arranged to operate a notched pawl engaging a sliding bar connected with a chain carrying V Fig. 3 is a detail view of the clevis. Fig. 4

The tripod A, supporting our pulling mechanism, consists of the bars A, united at the top by a bolt, A each bar A being pivoted at its lower end to a shoe, A On the chain B, secured to the upper united part of the tripod A, is hung the bar or plate 0, provided on its lower end with a chain, D,which passes under a pulley, E, and is hooked into the lower part of the clevis F. (Shown in detail in Fig. 3.) 4 The clevis F is pivoted at the lower end of the notched bar G, having its bearingon the plate 0, into the notches of which bar G mesh notches formed on the pawl H, pivoted to the link I, fulcrumed on the lever J, connected by the arm K with the operatinglever L, fulcrumed on the bracket M, secured to the bar or plate 0. The brace O connects the bar or plate 0 with the bracket M, and to the latter is pivoted a lever, P, provided on its lower end with a handle, and to its upper end is pivoted the detaching-arm Q, working between the bracket N and the bar or plate 0. The bracket M supports the sliding bolt R, which is guided in its movement on the said bracket by the shoulder or lug c on the bar or plate 0. A bent spring, S, forces the left outer end of the bolt R into contact with one of the notches of the bar G, which is thus held in position. The sliding boltR is operated by the hand-lever P.
The operation is as follows: To the pulley E is pivoted the clevis- T, carrying the pull-chain U,which is fastened around the stone or stump to be lifted or pulled, the other parts of the machine being in the position shown in Fig. 1. The lever L is then moved downward in the direction of the arrow a by hand or power, which causes the lever J to move the link I and its pawl H upward, and as the notches of the latter engage with the notches in the bar G it causes the latter to be moved upward, thereby pulling on the chain D, which lifts the pulley E, and consequently the stump or stone to be pulled, by means of the chain U, attached to the clevis T, pivoted on the pulley E. The lever L is then returned to its former position, which causes the pawl H to slide downward over the notches of the bar G and then engage with the notches again, and the above-described operation is repeated until the stump is pulled out entirely.
It will be seen that the sliding bolt R permits an upward movement of the notched bar G, but prevents a downward movement of the same when the pawl H is disengaged and slides downward. The notched bar G can be disengaged from the pawl H and the sliding bolt R by moving the hand-lever P in the direction of the arrow 1), which causes the detaching-arm Q to strike against the link I and thereby push the pawl H to the left and out of contact with the notches on the bar G, and the lever P at the same time moves the sliding bolt R to the left, so as to disengage it from the respective notch in the bar G and also compress the spring S. The notched bar G is then free to be adjusted, after which the lever P is returned to its former position, permitting the pawl H to again engage the notches in the bar G, and the bent, spring S will move the sliding bolt R to the right until its outer end again engages with the notches in the bar G.
For very heavy work I dispense with the arm K and substitute the chain V, connecting the lever L with the toothed bar W and passing over a pulley, V, hung on the lever J. The toothed bar W engages a pin, 10, on the bracket M. The operation is the same as before described.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a stump-puller, the combination of a support, anotched bar, and a sliding boltfor holding the notched bar in place with a notched pawl engaging the notched bar, a'lever connected by a link with a pawl, and a pulling-lever connected with the said link-1ever, substantially as shown and described.

In a stump'puller, the combination of a bar supported by a tripod, a notched bar connected to the said bar by means of a chain carrying a pulley, and a sliding bolt for holding the notched bar in place with a notched pawl engaging the notched bar, alever connected 3. In a stump-puller, a support, a notched bar, a sliding bolt for holding the notched bar in place, and a notched pawl engaging with the notched bar and supported by a link attached to a lever, in combination with a hand-lever having adetaching-arm for throwing the notched pawl and the sliding bolt out of contact with the notched bar, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a stump-puller, the tripod A, the bar 0, suspended from the said tripod by the chain B, the notched bar G, connected to the bar 0 by a chain, D, carrying the pulley E, and the sliding bolt R, having the spring S, in combination with the lever L, connected to the lever J by the link K, and the notched pawl H, connected with the lever J by the link I, substantially as shown and described.
