To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAMS. SEYMOUR, of Kenosha, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Machine for Securing Fabrics to Bed-Bottom Frames, of which the followingis a specification.
The machine comprises a suitable support for the end rail of the mattress, means for holding it in place, means for holding the batten in place, and a claihp or compressor and mechanism for operating the same; and the invention consists in the parts and combinations hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the machine proper, .in connection with 'a turntable for manipulating the mattress. Figure 1 is a'side elevation. Fig. 2is aportion of a plan of the turn-table and its support. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation, Fig. 5 is a front elevation without the turn-table;
The frame of the machine consists of uprights A and a cross-piece, A, preferably of castiron, and firmly bolted together at a a. The cross-piece has a vertical flange, a, and ahorizontal flange, a, forminga bed or support for the end rail of the mattress. The upper'ends of the uprights serve as guides,between which the compressor A plays up and down. 7
The compressor is operated by a screwshaft, 13, at each end, which passes through an opening in each end of the compressor provided with a corresponding female thread.
The screw-shafts pass through openings in the cross-piece A, and are shouldered so as to prevent their being drawn through the openings. They are operated by corresponding gearing, B, at each end, which is employed to raise and lower both ends-alike, the screw upon one shaft being right and the other left hand.
The reverse movements of the compressor are effected by means of vibrating frictionpulleys O 0, supported in a frame, 0, which is pivoted at c to its supporting-frame D,which is bolted to the cross-piece A and to the floor,

A shaft, D, journaled in two of the uprights A, at d, carries a friction-pulley, D", uponthe periphery of which the vibrating pulleys are arranged to bear alternately. The vibrating pulleys are operated continuously by pulleys overhead are passed, the beltupon one side being crossed and upon the other not crossed, so as to give motion in opposite directions. When one of the vibrating pulleys is in contact with pulley D as the upper one-said pulley D will be driven in one direction, and when the other is in contact it will be driven in the opposite direction. The vibration of the pulleys is effected by an eccentric-pin, a, working in aslot or opening, 0 in the edge of the frame 0', said pin being connected to a wheel or head, E, of a rock-shaft, E, supported or journaled in a projecting portion of the frame or other suitable support, said rock-shaft having a lever, E, projecting to the front within reach of the operator,for rocking it suitably to produce the vibration of the pulleys, as desired.
The shaft D has a pinion, b, at each end, which engages with the gearing B, and operates the same to drive the screw-shafts.
On the front of the machine is attached a projection or leaf, a whose upper surface is level with the top of the flange a, and below this leaf is a rock-shaft, F, journaled in plates or brackets f, which are attached to the crosspiece A by bolts. This rock-shaft is provided with clamp-armsf, which are thrown upward by rocking the shaft through a crank or arm, f ,projec ting therefrom, to which a rod,r,is attached, which connects with a pedal-lever, p, pivoted or fulcrnmed on the floor near its center, so that when the pedal is borne down the opposite end will elevate the rod and rock the shaft a quarter-round and so throw the points of the clamparms f up toward the flange a. Slots 8 are provided in the-leaf a ,for the arms to workthrough.
A rockshaft, F, is also provided, pivoted at the ends in projections e and provided with clamp-arms f and lever-connections, substantially the same as 'those of F, but with the arms acting downward instead of upward, the pedal-lever 1) being pivoted at its end to the floor and to the rod r near the center, so as to (3*, over which'belts 0 from the powenshaft change the order of leverage and produce a downward instead of an upward throw of the arms. The shaft F is weighted on the side opposite to the arms f, so as to counterbalance them and .keep them in their most elevated position when raised to that position.

The turn-table G is supported on a truck, G, which runs on a track or frame, G The center piece, of the frame of the table is pivoted to a shaft or support extending upward from the truck at the center, and the under side is provided with rollers 9 which rest on a circular flange or track, g of the truck. The under side is also provided with a downwardly-projecting member, 9 provided with a set-screw, which is made to impinge upon the circular flange, in order to set or fix the turn-table temporarily to the truck.
The under side of the compressor is provided With a facing, e, which is shaped to fit the top of the batten.
The operation is as follows: The end rail,-
H, of the mattress-frame is placed on the leaf a or on the flange a of the cross-piece, with one side against the flange a. Then by pressing down on the pedal-lever the arms f of the rock-shaft F are brought up against it and hold it close against the last-mentioned flange. The fabric I on the table is, now brought forward by moving the truck forward until the end of the fabric is properly adjusted on the rail. The batten h, which has had the nailsz' for fastening it to the end rail previously started or set in holes partly through the batten, is now adjusted on the fabric, and the armsf of the upper rock-shaft, F, are turned down on it by pressing down on the pedal-le- Verp, to hold it in place, when by a movement of the lever E in the proper direction the compressor is brought down and drives the nails home, at the same time pressing the parts of the mattress tightly together. The
lever E is then reversed, so as to raise the compressor.
The clamp-arms f are now released and the table run back, bringing along the end rail and batten thus attached to the 0 fabric sufficient to enable the turn-table to turn half-way round, so as to. present the opposite end of the fabric to the front of the machine, and the operation repeated for attaching the other end rail and batten. The machine is designed to be operated by two attendants, one standing on each side of the table, by the pedal-levers p p.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. The combination of the bed or support a a the compressor A, screw-shafts B, and clamp-arms f, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination ofpedal-lever, asp, rod, as 1', rock-shaft, as F, clamp-arms f, and flange a, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of the pivoted frame 0, provided with pulleys O O, theshaft D, provided with pulley D and pinions bb, thegear- 6o ings B' B and screw-shafts B B, and compressor A, as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination of uprights A, crosspiece'A, compressor A, screw-shafts B B, and gearings B B, as and for the purpose specified.
5. The combination of uprights A, cross piece A, compressor A screw-shafts B B, gearings B B, and operating mechanism consisting of vibrating friction-pulleys G G, pnl- 7o ley D, shaft D, pinions b b, and shifting device E, as and for the'purpose specified.
