NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGEN GUMBREOHT, OF NAOKENHEIM, NEAR MENTZ, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE WITTEMANN BROTHERS, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
MACHINE FOR CAPSULING BOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,315, dated February 8, 1887. Application filed October 19, 1886. Serial No. 2l6,642. (N0 model.) Patented in Germany April 16 18 5 No. 34,531. I
tofore been granted to me in Germany under date of April 16, 1885, No. 34,531,) of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to certain new and vuseful improvements in that class of bottlecapping machines in which radially-movable slides are provided, which are operated by cams or eccentric guides, and thus pressed against the bottle-head. I
The object of my invention is to simplify the construction of the machine, to make it more efiective and more rapid in its operation.
The inventionconsists in the combination, with a fixed plate in which the pressers are guided, of 'a' movable piece acting on the pressers and serving to-press the ends of the same against the .cap of the bottle-head, all as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved bottle-capping machine. Fig. 2is a cross-sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear view. Fig. 4 is a front view of a modification, showing the pressers in one position. Fig. 5 is an end view, and'Fig. 6 is a front view, showing the pressers in another position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-.
' upper ends with lugs O,projecting toward the rear, and the inner ends are provided with lugs D, projecting toward the front. The inner or under sides of said lugsare recessed segmentally. To lugs D of two slides segmental rubber heads E are fastened. Recess F is formed in the center of the plate for receiving the neck of the bottle, and in said recess a head, G, of a screw is located, a thumb-nut, H, beingscrewed on the end of the screw.
A disk, J, is mounted to slide on the face of the frame A, and is uided by the flange K of By means of the handle 0 the disk Jis turned into the position shown in Fig. 1, whereby the slides are separated,so as to permit of placing the bottle-head into the recess or cavity F. The handle 0 is then pressed in the direction of the arrow as, Fig. 1, whereby the rubber heads E are pressed against the side of the bottle-head and cap on the same, the ends of the said heads abutting, and the lugs D on the other two slides are pressed against said heads at the meeting ends, whereby pressure is exerted on all the sides of the bottle-head and cap on the same, and the cap is securely pressed on the head, so that the slides move outward when the handle 0 is turned in the inverse direction of the arrow 00. A sliding pin, P, is passed through the lug O of each slide B,which pins are surrounded by spiral springs Q, resting against the under side of the lugs G and against the inner ends of the radial slots Q in the plate or frame A. -When the disk J is turned in the direction of the arrow as and the slides moved inward, said springs are compressed, and when the disk J is moved' in the inverse direction of the arrow 41: said springs expand and move the-slides outward.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4., 5, and 6 the'slides are passed through slots R in the edges of the square plate A and through radial grooves S in a ring, S, mounted to turn on the frame A and provided with a handle, S. The slides B are provided at their outer ends with the heads 0*, which are larger than the *slots in the square frame A so as to prevent the slides from passing too far into the frame A. By turning the ring S in the direction of the arrow as the slides are brought into the position shown in Fig. 6, whereby the inner ends are moved toward each other, and the rubber caps on the inner ends of two of the slides pressed against the bottle-head and cap,
and the other two slides pressed against the two rubber caps.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a bottle-capping machine, the combination, with a frame having guides, of slides mounted in said guides to move toward and from the center ofthe frame, which slides are provided with projections, a rotary disk having cams acting on said slides, rods on the slides, the ends of the rods being in the rim of the frame, and springs mounted on said rods and pressing the slides upward, substantially as set forth.
2. A bottle-capping machine constructed with a fixed frame and sliding jaws on the same, two of which jaws, opposite each other, are provided at their inner ends with semicireular softrubber heads, the otherjaws being provided with lugs which can act on said rubber heads, substantially as shown and de scribed.
3. In a bottle-capping machine, the combination, with the frame, of the slides 13, having the lugs Gand D,the disk J,guide 1 on the frame and provided with cam projections which can act on the lugs D, the rods P, passing through the lugs C and having their ends at the rim of the frame, springs surrounding said rods, and soft-rubber heads on two opposite slides, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EUGEN GUMBRECHT. [In 3.]
