Abstract

A book holder comprising a boxlike receptacle having means for mounting the receptacle on a planar surface such as a wall or the like. An opening is provided at one end of the receptacle for receiving a book. An ejector bar is positioned in the other end of the receptacle opposite the opening engaging the inserted book. An operating handle is attached to one end of the ejector bar and extends through a sidewall of the receptacle for bowing the ejector bar in the direction of said opening thereby partially ejecting the book. A book may be completely concealed within the receptacle yet it can be easily removed by operation of the ejector bar.

It is known in the prior art to provide a book holder mounted on a wall, table, chair, etc; however, most of those holders of the prior art are in the form of racks having no means to facilitate the removal of a book therefrom. Further, in situations where a book is entirely disposed in the holder, there is no projecting edge which may be grasped in order to remove the book.

Applicant has devised by this invention an attractive book holder having an ejector therein which v may be assembled and operated in a simplified manner.

Specifically, the book holder of this application comprises a boxlike receptacle of plastic, wood, metal or other suitable materials having a front wall, a rear wall, two sidewalls and a bottom wall. The receptacle has means attached to the rear wall for mounting the receptacle on a planar surface. The receptacle is provided with an opening through which a book may be inserted. Disposed in the receptacle adjacent to and overlying the bottom wall is a resilient ejector hinged at one end at a point adjacent the intersection of one sidewall and the bottom wall and having an actuator'on the other end thereof extending through the other sidewall. A projection is provided on the under side of the resilient ejector bar and engages the bottom wall thereby causing the resilient ejector bar to normally maintain a slightly bowed position. In order to eject a book the actuator is compressed thereby further bowing the ejector bar and partially ejecting the book from the bookholder. I

These and other objects of the invention will become more apparent to those skilled in the art by reference to the following detailed description when viewed in light of the accompanying drawings wherein:

FIG. 1 is a view in perspective of the bookholder of this invention;

FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the book holder of this invention showing the ejector bar and a book in the book holder;

FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view along lines 3-3 of FIG. 2;

FIG. 4 is a view in elevation of the book holder of this invention wherein the opening is in a vertical plane; and

FIG. 5 shows the book holder of this invention mounted in a plane angula'rly disposed relative to the planar surface to which it is attached.

With reference to the drawings, the book holder is indicated generally by the numeral and is in the form of a boxlike receptacle 12. As shown, the receptacle is generally rectangular in shape and includes 'a front wall 14 and a rear wall 16. The front and rear walls are joined by

18 and 20 and bottom wall 22. Mounting means in the form of a bracket 24 is attached to the rear wall 16 for purposes of mounting the receptacle on a planar surface 26 such as a wall or the like. Any other suitable means may be provided for mounting the book holder on a planar surface. The bracket shown has a female portion mounted on the rear wall 16 having upwardly converging side portions. A male portion is mounted on the supporting planar surface and is matingly engaged by said female portion. In lieu of a bracket, double sided adhesive tape or the like may be used if desired.

An opening 28 is provided in the receptacle opposite the bottom wall 22. The opening is in a plate which is perpendicular to the plane of the planar surface on which the book holder is mounted as shown in FIGS. 1 through 4. In FIG. 5 a modification is shown wherein the book holder is mounted angularly with respect to the planar surface such that the opening is in a plane angularly disposed thereto.

Positioned in the receptacle adjacent the bottom wall 22 and overlying said bottom wall is a resilient ejector bar 30. The ejector bar 30 is hinged at one end at a point adjacent the intersection of the bottom wall 22 and sidewall 20 by means of lugs 32 which engage recesses 34 in'the

actuator 36 is attached to the other end of the ejector bar 30 and projects through the sidewall 18. The actuator has a button 38 thereon. Intermediate the ends of the ejector bar is a projection 40 attached to the underside of the ejector bar and engages the bottom wall 22 for purposes of normally maintain ing the resilient ejector bar in a slightly bowed condition. The length of the ejector bar 30 is somewhat greater than the length of the bottom wall 22 such that the ejector bar will be forced to bow outwardly toward the opening 28 when in normal position. Therefore, both the lug 30 and the relative lengths of the bottom wall and the ejector bar assure that the bar will bow outwardly.

In operation, a book is inserted through the opening 28 into the receptacle l2 and into engagement with the ejector bar 30. When it is desired to retrieve the book from the holder, the actuator 36 is pushed inwardly causing the ejector bar 30 to bow outwardly toward the opening 28 thereby pushing and partially ejecting the book from the book holder to enable the user to easily retrieve the book. Note that since the bar 30 is normally partially bowed, little difficulty is encountered in further bowing the bar upon pushing the actuator inwardly.

The book holder 10 may be mounted on a planar surface in a number of different relative positions. For example, in FIG. 4, the holder is shown mounted in such a position that the opening is in a vertical plane. In this case, the operation is the same as in FIGS. l'through 3. In FIG. 5 a suitable bracket 42 is shown for holding the book holder in an angular position relative to the planar surface 26.

It is to be understood that a holder may be provided in any of a number of different sizes depending upon the particular size of the book to be placed therein.

I claim:

1. A book holder comprising a substantially rigid boxlike receptacle, having a front wall, a rear wall, sidewalls and a bottom wall defining an elongated relatively "deep and narrow recess therein;

means attached to said rear wall for mounting said receptacle on a planar surface;

said receptacle having an opening opposite said bottom wall for receiving a book; 7

a resilient ejector bar positioned in said receptacle adjacent to and overlying said bottom wall for engaging a book inserted into said receptacle;

one end of said bar being in pivotal engagement with the inside of said receptacle at a point adjacent to the intersection of said bottom wall and one sidewall; and

an actuator on the other end of said bar extending through the other sidewall of said receptacle whereby said baris bowed in the direction of said opening upon actuation thereby partially ejecting a book positioned in said receptacle.

2. The book holder of claim 1 wherein said bar includes 'a spacer projection intermediate its ends and positioned between said bar and said bottom wall for normally maintaining said bar in a partially bowed condition.

3. The book holder of claim 1 wherein said bar is of a length greater than the length of the bottom wall of said receptacle and has shoulders thereon for engaging said other sidewall and wherein said bar is normally in a partially bowed condition as a result of said difference in length.

4. A book holder comprising a substantially rigid boxlike receptacle, having a front wall, a rear wall, sidewalls and a bottom wall defining an elongated relatively deep and narrow recess therein;

means for mounting said receptacle on a planar surface;

said receptacle having an opening opposite said bottom wall for receiving a book;

one end of said bar being in pivotalengagement with the inside of said receptacle at a point adjacent to the intersection of said bottom wall and one sidewall; and

thereby partially ejecting a book positioned in said receptacle.

Claims

1. A book holder comprising a substantially rigid boxlike receptacle, having a front wall, a rear wall, sidewalls and a bottom wall defining an elongated relatively deep and narrow recess therein; means attached to said rear wall for mounting said receptacle on a planar surface; said receptacle having an opening opposite said bottom wall for receiving a book; a resilient ejector bar positioned in said receptacle adjacent to and overlying said bottom wall for engaging a book inserted into said receptacle; one end of said bar being in pivotal engagement with the inside of said receptacle at a point adjacent to the intersection of said bottom wall and one sidewall; and an actuator on the other end of said bar extending through the other sidewall of said receptacle wherEby said bar is bowed in the direction of said opening upon actuation thereby partially ejecting a book positioned in said receptacle.

2. The book holder of claim 1 wherein said bar includes a spacer projection intermediate its ends and positioned between said bar and said bottom wall for normally maintaining said bar in a partially bowed condition.

4. A book holder comprising a substantially rigid boxlike receptacle, having a front wall, a rear wall, sidewalls and a bottom wall defining an elongated relatively deep and narrow recess therein; means for mounting said receptacle on a planar surface; said receptacle having an opening opposite said bottom wall for receiving a book; a resilient ejector bar positioned in said receptacle adjacent to and overlying said bottom wall for engaging a book inserted into said receptacle; one end of said bar being in pivotal engagement with the inside of said receptacle at a point adjacent to the intersection of said bottom wall and one sidewall; and an actuator on the other end of said bar extending through the other sidewall of said receptacle whereby said bar is bowed in the direction of said opening upon actuation thereby partially ejecting a book positioned in said receptacle.
