Description
L. PARKER.
Straw Cutter.
Patented June 24. 1862.
N. PETERS. Phommhogn her, Washington. D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
LEONARD PARKER, OF \VINTERSET, IOXVA.
IMPROVEMENT lN STRAW-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,702, ilatcd'Juuc 21, 1802.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, LEONARD PARKER, of Winterset, in the county of Madison and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Straw-Cutters; and Idohereby declare that the following is a fulland exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consistsin an arrangement of cutting knives, spring, and spring-bottom, the whole being arranged, combined, constructed, and operated in the manner hereinafter described, for the purpose of cutting straw.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is an end view of the straw-cutter. Fig. 2 is a cut or sectional view. Fig. 3 isa face view of the cuttingknives, and also represents the relative position of the cutting-knives with each other.
a is the straw-box.
b b are the slides of the cutting frame.
0 is the cutting-frame.
jand q are cross-pieces of the cutting-frame. To the cross-piece j is attached a block, 1', to which is secured, by means of a screw or'bolt, h, the operating-lever d. To the lever d is secured, bymeans of a screw or bolt, the upo is the spring for the spring-bottom.
:0 are cross'pieces, which are used for the purpose of preventing the front end of the straw-box a and slides b from spreading apart.
The cutting knife 75, the cuttingedge of which is made in the form of the letter W, is secured to the cross piece j by means of bolts or screws.
'The side knives, m and n, are secured to the end of the sides of the straw-box, or to the slides b. The bottom knife, Z, issecurcd to the end of the bottom 4' of the straw-box.
s is the hind foot of the straw-box.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: The straw is placed in the straw box and fed up to the knives in the ordinary way, and by pressing down on the lever d the straw will be cut with great ease. The knife 70 will cause the straw to spread out against the side knives, m and a, and down on the bottom knife, 1, thereby giving to the four knives a shearing action. The spring-bottom]; is used for the purpose of holding the straw up from off the edge of the knifel while feeding up the straw to the knives. I
I wish it to be clearly understood that I do not claim the spring 0 and knives land 7: as of 4
