Speecation of Letters Patent No. 3,566, dated April 25, 1844.
To all whom t may concern Be it knownthat I, PALMER SUMNER, ot the city, county, and Stateof New York,
have invented a new and Improved Mode of Making' FireproofCeilings for Buildings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of my invention consists in making fire proof ceilings by means ot metal laths, either of iron or any other suitable metal.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de scribe its construction:
I construct my ceiling either of iron rafters or any other suitable material known to be tire proof. I then attach to said rafters what I term a lire prooi:l lath made also of iron or any other suitable material, having each edge of the lath bent over and inclining to the center s0 as to ferm a longitudinal groove forming a dovetail for holding the mortar on each lath, the lath being shown in section marked (a, (L, a, a, n ta) also there is another tier of laths riveted or nailed on to these laths running at right angles as marked `(Z9, 6,) forming a necessary ground work for what I call a double ceiling, so as to have plastering above and below as shown both above and below the lathe' a, and o, in drawing, showing also how the mortar is held by the dovetail groove in the lath made by turning the edges over so that it is impossible for the mortar to fall oil". I also in constructing my ceiling run `my rafters diagonally across the room both above and below so that by so constructing them and likewise being of metal the eX- pansion being so small that the ceiling will not crack as is commonly the case with wood ceilings.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi The within method of constructing metal laths, either ot'iron, or any other suitable material-also the constructing of ceilings by running the laths diagonally across the room so as to be least aiected by the eXA pansion all of which is fully set forth in the annexed specification and drawings.
