To all whom, it may concern:

Beit known that l, Cniinnns C. Bannion, citizen of the United States, residing at Burnside, in the county of Hancock and State of 5 Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Haine-Tug and Trace Attach ments 5 and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the ro art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of' this specification. i

My invention relates to cast haine-tags and trace attachments co mbined; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the ciaiins.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the haine-tug, which is of cast metal covered with leather, B, except immediately' around the recesses C in the convex face of the haine-tug A. The recesses C 3o are provided with integral partitions D, which have rearwardly-inclined outer faces, E, said partitions D being provided with key-holes Aor open slots F, which communicate with the rectangular openingsG in the recesses O. At 33 its rear end thchaine-tng A is provided with an outwardly and rearwardly extending metal guide-loop, Il, through which the trace I is passed.

At its forward end the trace l is provided o with a metal trace attachment, J, which is secured to the front end of the trace-tug I by rivets l l, passed through the leather and through the tang K of the trace attachment J. On its rear face the trace attachment J is pro- 4 5 vided with a rearwardly-projecting curved hook, L, cast integral with the trace attachnient, and on its outer face, in front of this hooi; L, the attachment J is provided with a rectangular' recess or depression, M, extend- 50 ing entirely across `the face of the attachment J. At the middle of the recess M the attachment .l is provided with a hole, N,

lt, being hinged in eyes in the outer end of the split stein l? of the key Q., so that when the ward of the key is either in the locking ornnlocking position the locking-leafR may fall at either side of the split stein P into the recess M, and thereby prevent the k ey from being turned while the locking-leaf is in the depression M. The recesses C are preferably three in num ber; but the number may be Varied to meet the requirements of the case in which they are employed.

At its front end the haine-tug A is provided with an `attaching-,iron, X, which is made in two parts or sections, Y Z. The part Y is provided with a dat stein or shank, a, at the front end of which is an integral hook, b, which isturned inwardly toward the haine and then extended outwardly toward the shank c, and terminates a short distance from the shank a, thereby leaving a space, c, between the end of the hook Z1 andthe shank e. Near the termination of the hook b said hook is provided on its inner 'face with a transverse groove, d. The section or part Z of Athe attaching-iron X is provided at its front endwith a projecting lug, e, which extends toward the hanie when the attachment is in place-that is, connected to the haine-ring. The lng e is provided with an interna-l integral convex (in orosssection) rib, f, which lits into the transverse groove d in the inner face of the hook b. The shank g of the part or section Z is also flat, and the shanks a and. g are provided with aligned rivet-holes h.

yThe haine-tug A is provided at its front end with an attaching-strap, i, which is introduced between the shanks of the parts or sections, and is secured in place between said shanks by rivets passed through the Shanks and strap and properly upset, to ret-ain the parts firmly together after the home-ring has been placed in the eye of the attaching-iron. This attaching-iron being made sectional obviates the necessity of closing the eye by bending the iron, thereby preventing the iron from breaking, as it frequently does in the old constructions.

Furthermore, the draft on the attachingiron causes it to, hold the haine-tug ont from the animal, and prevents the chaiing usually caused by the haine-tug.
