No. 356,463 Patented Jan. 25, 1887.

EINTTED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
DANIEL WV. GASKILL, OF LITTLE'ROCK, ARKANSAS.
COTTON-GIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,463, dated January 25, 1887.
' Application iiled March 30, 1886. Serial No. 197,172. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
,Be it known that I, DANIEL W. GASKILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Gins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to devices for ginning seed-cotton, in which a revolving rollcarrier is used to bring the cotton to the saws; and the object of my invention isto improve cotton gins in the particulars hereinafter I accomplish this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse section of a portion of a cotton-gin constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the saws and saw-spacing blocks with a portion of the breastplate and its adjustable shoe. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the breast-plate and shoe. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on a large scale of one of the serrated wing-plates and arms of the roll-' carrier. Fig. 5 is a front view of a portion of one of the serrated wing-plates.
In the drawings, A represents a portion of the frame of the gin, upon which is mounted, in suitable bearings, the shaft B, carrying the saws B, each provided with a central eye, I), and in the spaces between the saws are mounted upon the shaft a series of cylindrical parting-blocks, B, the peripheries of which extend to the roots of the saw-teeth, to prevent the passage of cotton-seed forward between said saws, as will be hereinafter described.
The usual ribs between the saws are dispensed with, and in place of them there is adjustably attached to the breast-plate C a long plate or shoe, 0. This shoe has slots 0 opposite each saw, and above said slots the shoe has shallow grooves 0 having their sides slightly divergent upward and their bottoms even with the lower edge of the breast-plate, so as to facilitate the clearance of the seeds from in front of the saws. The space between the bottom of the shoe and the partingblocks B is about one-twelfth of an inch, and the space between the bottoms of the slots 0' and the teeth of the saws is about the same, and
this space, running the whole length of the gin, permits all the lint to pass through, while the seed is kept back and revolved within the hopper A until all the lint is taken off, and then they drop out at A The breast-plate O is slotted at the points where it receives the screws 0, which secure it adjustably to the frame of the gin, and it is also slotted where it receives the screws G which adj ustably secure the shoe thereto.
The cotton is revolved within the hopper by the roll-carrier D. This has a series of radial arms, cl, secured to its periphery, and to the outer ends of said arms are removably attached the serrated plates d so that when they are worn out new plates can promptly. take their place. The grooves between the teeth of the serrated plates d are beveled at (2 toward their base, to make a lodgement for the cottonseed; or their front edges are made more prominent, so that the teeth will easily carry the seeds away from the shoe and drop them at A. To regulate the amount of cotton operated upon at once by the saws, and consequently the amount bearing upon the saws and parting-blocks, there is between the seed-chute A and the saws a segmental slide or cutoff, E, the ends of which fit loosely into grooves a*, formed in the ends of the casing. This slide is provided with a segmental rack, E, into which meshes a segmental pinion or pinions, f, pivoted to the frame at f,and operated by a handle, f, projecting therefrom.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim I 1. The combination of the ginsaws, each provided with a central eye, parting-blocks extending to the bases of the teeth of said saws, and a breast-plate provided with an adjustable shoe having its lower edge above the bases of the saw-teeth and grooves for each saw, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the gin-saws, parting-blocks extending to the teeth of said saws, a breast-plate, and an adjustable shoe thereon, with a roll-carrier having radial arms with detachable plates having rearwardly-recessed teeth, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. A cottongin comprising the gin-saws,
plate and shoe, an adjustable segmental. slide, IO
the segmental rack, and the pinion, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
