SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,267, dated January18, 1887.
Application filed February 14, 1886. Serial No. 193,022.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN ZIMERMANN, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Shuttle-Box-Operating Mechanism for Looms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved shuttle box operating mechanism for hand-looms for weaving carpets and other fabrics.
The invention consists of the shuttleboxoperating mechanism connected with and 0perated by the jacquard.
The invention also consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in-which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional front elevation of a hand-loom provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, partly in section, of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view of a portion of the devices for operating the drop-boxes. Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail face view of the cam.
In hand-looms for weaving carpets or other heavy fabrics the drop-boxes are operated by means of separate devices, which require a great deal of attention and labor from the operator. In my invention I obviate these difficulties by shifting the drop-boxes to their respective positions automatically by the Jacquard mechanism with very little effort or additional exertion on the part of the operator.
The frame A of the loom is provided with the usual batten, B, and the jacquard 0, Operated by the treadle D, the connection D, and the lever Ein the usual way. The dropboxes F, containing theshuttles, are each hung by ropes F, passing over pulleys B on the batten B, and fastened to each other by a link, F
On a bracket, G, attached to a bar of the frame A, is journaled the shaft H, provided on one end with an upwardly-extending arm, I, having a slot, 1, in which slides a bolt, 1 attached to the link F. On the other end of (No model.)
the shaft H is secured a plate, J, on the front face of which are pivotally mounted thelevers K, each resting with its lower end on a pin, L; placed in an aperture, J, in the plate J, and having a head, L, between which and the outer face of the plate J is placed a spring, L", coiled on the pin L.
To the upper end of the plate J, and directly above the upper ends of the levers K, is hinged the locking-piece J", having a notch, J. In their normal position the upper ends of the levers K are engaged with the notch J of the piece J". the springs L and the pins L, holding the lower ends of the levers away from the face of the plate J. On the periphery of the plate J are formed notches J in line with the levers K, and of equal number with the same. A wheel, M, mounted on a lever, M, pivoted to an arm, M secured to the main frame A, is held in contact with one of the notches J on the plate J bya pull-spring, M A cam, N, has curved canrgrooves N on its face next to the pins L, all of which grooves terminate in a central point. In the vertical central line the cam N is provided with an oblong recess, N through which passes the shaft H.
The cam N has an upwardly-projecting arm,
' N, pivotally connected to the lever E of the jacquard.
The upper end of each lever K is fastened to a cord, 0, passing through apertures in the guide P, secured to the frame A, and passing to and being fastened to a corresponding lifting-hook, Q, ofthe jacquard O. The heddles R, secured in the usual manner to the lifting hooks Q, are provided on their lower ends with the usual weights, S. The arrangement of the warps is the same as in other looms.
The operation is as follows: By pressing on the treadle D the lifting-frame of the jacquard is raised by means of the lever E and the connection D, and at the same time the cam N is also raised, and one of the cords O pulls on the upper end of one lever K, so as to disengage the upper end of the said lever K fronr the notch of the piece J and throws the lever to the front edge of the same, where it is held by the action of the spring L which has been compressed, and the pin L is forced inward through the aperture in the plate J ,to project into the corresponding groove on the cam N.
The respective harness threads and their weights S have also been lifted by theaction of the treadle D, and when the treadle is released from its pressure the weights of the harness and the parts connected withthe jacquard, which have been raised, will now bear on the lever E and the arm N so as to force the cam N downward, whereby the pin L, which had been projecting into one of the grooves N,
will be brought to a central position on the cam N, whereby the plate J is swung sidewise, imparting a rocking motion to the shaft H, which in turn gives a sidewise motion to the arm I, the upper end of which will move the link F to one side, so as to raise one dropbox F and lower the other correspondingly.
The grooved pulley M on the lever M holds the plate J and consequently the drop-lever, in position by the action of the spriin M on the lever M.
It will be seen that the weights S on the harness-threads, which are raised to form the top shed, act by their own weight as the power which moves the drop-boxes into position, so that no extra power is required to place the drop-boxes in the position corresponding to the shuttlerace by the devices above described.
It will be seen that when one of the levers K is thrown out from under the notch of-the locking-piece it is held on the front edge of the locking-piece until another lever is pulled out by the action of the respective cord 0, which lifts the locking-piece sufficiently to disengage the lever from the notch, so that the other lever, which has been in the outward position, will return to its normal position, which it held before being pulled out, while the other one will be locked on the outer edge of the locking-piece in the same manner as the first one.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination of drop-boxes, their suspending cords or ropes, a link connecting said cords or ropes and the jacquard and its lever with a plate provided with levers and pins, a cam-plate operated by the jacquardlever, an arm operating the link connecting the cords or ropes from which the drop-boxes are suspended, cords connecting the levers on the plate with the lifting-hooks of the jacquard, and the link N and shaft H, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of drop-boxes, the jacquard, and cords attached to the lifting-hooks of the jacquard with a shaft provided with an arm, a link operated by said arm, the cords or ropes connected by said link and from which the drop-boxes are suspended, a plate, levers mounted on said plate, operating-pins acted upon by said levers, a locking-plate for locking the levers, a cam-plate, and a link, N, connecting the lever of the jacquard with said cam-plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A series of levers, a plate upon which said levers are mounted, spring-actuated pins operated upon by said levers, a locking-picce pivoted to said plate and locking in position said levers, a rocking shaft, an arm carried by said rocking shaft, the drop-boxes, and a link and cords connecting said arm with the drop-boxes, in combination with a grooved cam-plate, the Jacquard mechanism, a link connecting the lever ot' the jacquard and the grooved cam-plate, and cords connecting the lifting-hooks of the jacquard with theyupper ends of the levers on,the plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
