HORSE-DETACHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,097, dated January 18, 1887.
' Application filed September' S, 1886. Serial No. 213,025. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnvr SAMUEL BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, in the county of Obion and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Detachers, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to an improvement in horse-tletachers5-and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
.In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a horse-detacher embodying my improvements, aud showing a portion of the whifiietree to which it is attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View ofthe same.
A represents the whiffletree, and B represents a ferrule, which is made of iron or other suitable metal and is fitted on the end of Vthe whiffletree. The ferrule is provided on its inner end with a projecting tongue, O, which extends longitudinally on the whiflietree and tits in a groove, D, that is made therein. On one side of the ferrule is formed a tube or sleeve, E, from the outer end of which extends a curved arm, F. The outer end of the arm F is provided with an opening, G, which aligns with the bore of the sleeve or tube E.
H represents a sliding bolt which passes through the sleeve or tube E, and is adapted to enter the opening G of the arm, so as `to close the open side of the latter. This bolt is provided at its inner end with an arm, I, which extends along one -side of the whietree and is provided with a longitudinal slot, K. At the inner end of the said slot is formed an eye, L.
M represents a screw which extends through the slot K and enters the whiffietree, and the head of the said screw which bears against the outer side of the arm I is provided with an opening, m.
N represents the spring, which has one end attached to the rear end of the bolt, and the said spring extends rearwardly, passes through the opening m, and is provided near its rear end with a shoulder, a. At the extreme rear end of the spring is formed an eye, a.
O represents the cord which is attached to the eye of the spring, extends through the eye of the bolt, and is guided through an eye, P, on the rear side ofthe whiftletree. The other end of the said cord extends to a convenient point in the vehicle, where it can be readily reached by the driver.
The operation of my invention is as follows:y The opening in the rear end of the trace is placedinthe curved arm F, and the bolt is then extended through the said opening and caused to enter the opening G at the outer end of the' arm. This causes the shoulder a of the locking-spring N to engage the eye or opening of the screw M, thereby locking the bolt and preventing it from becoming accidentally detached from the trace. In order to release the trace, and thereby detach the horse, the driver pulls upon the cord O, which draws the rear end of the spring N toward the rear end of the arm I, thus causing the shoulder n of the said spring to first disengage the opening m of the screw, and a continued pull upon the said cord causes the bolt to slide rearwardly, and thus release the trace, as will be very readily understood. Screws C pass through openings which are made in the tongue C and enter the whifiietree, so as to secure the ferrule firmly on the end of the whiflietree. y
A horse -detacher thus constructed is extremely cheap and simple, is very durable, is
easily attached to the whiffletree, and does not work loose or rattle.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. The combination, with the whifletree, of the fcrrule attached thereto and having the tube or sleeve E and the curved arm F at the outer end thereof, the bolt H, iitting in the tube or sleeve and having the rearward-ex tending arm provided with the slot K, the screw extending through the said slot and entering the whitlietree and provided with the eye or opening m, and the spring, N, attached to the sliding bolt and extending through the eye or opening m, the said spring having the shoulder a near its outer end, for the pur Vpose set forth, substantially as described.
IOO
and the operating cord O, connected to the In testiniony that I claim the foregoing as my arm I, and the spring N, as set forth. own Ihzive hereto affixed my signature in pres- 1o o. The combinatio1i,withtiieWhifletreehavence of two witnesses.
ing the eye m and the arm or keeperF of the sliding bolt H, having the spring N, provided LEVI' SAMUEL BROVN with the detent-shoulder n, to engage the eye Witnesses: m and look the boli; in its extended position, DON SINGLETARY, substantially as described. W. H. PRICE.
