Abstract
A METHOD OF FORMING A POLE BASE STRUCTURE, WHICH IS FORMED IN A SIMPLIFIED FASHION BY OPERATIONS ON SHEETS OF MATERIAL TO ENABLE CONVENIENT ASSEMBLY OF A STRONG AND DURABLE POLE BASE STRUCTURE, COMPRISING FORMING TRANSVERSE CUTS IN SHEETS OF MATERIAL TO FORM CUT ON SIDE PANEL SEGMENTS, BENDING END SEGMENTS AND CRIMPING PORTIONS THEREOF, PLACING THE CRIMPED SIDE PANELS ADJACENT CUT SIDE PANEL SEGMENTS AND INTERFITTING SAID CRIMPED AND CUT SIDE SEGMENTS.

B23p 17/00 U.S. Cl. 29-155 6 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a pole base structure, and more particularly to the formation thereof in a simplified and accurate fashion, from sheets of material, which can be easily assembled, providing strengthened support for the pole.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pole base structure which may be simply and easily formed and assembled, and will aiford strengthened support against stress in the pole base structure.
Devices heretofore proposed for this purpose have generally been objectionable due to their complexity and high cost of manufacture. These and other objections to devices heretofore proposed have been overcome in the invention disclosed herein.

FIG. 1 is an isometric view of a portion of a pole base structure as initially formed in an embodiment of the invention.

FIG. 4 is a fragmentary, isometric, view of a portion of a pole base structure, as initially formed in another embodiment of the invention.

FIG. 6 is a top plan view of the parts assembled.
As will be seen from the drawings, forming part hereof, this invention relates to a pole base structure having features, described below, such that a unit may be easily and conveniently assembled from sheets of material, will be strong and durable in assembled form.
The pole base structure 11 (FIG. 3) for example, is formed from sheets of material 12 (FIG. 1) which may initially be fiat sheets marginally similarly formed or extruded to form the interfitting side panels 13a, 13b, 13c, and 13d (FIG. 3).
In the first step of the operation (FIG 1), for example, a transverse or bias cut is made in a sheet 12 of suitable material, thereby dividing it into side panels 13a and 13b, with bias edges 22a and 22b. Edges 21a and 21b are formed on the sides of the sheet 12 and crimped to inwardly offset them.
In the assembly stage (FIG. 2) the side panels 13a and 13b are juxtaposed so that the upper edges 32a and 32b (FIG. 2) are angularly disposed and thereby a cut or biased edge 22b may be positioned against or fit into crimped edge 21a; the lower edges 31a and 31b are similarly angularly disposed substantially continuously. The other sides 13c and 13d are similarly disposed and interfitted (FIG. 3) so that cut or bias edges 22a, 22b, 22c, and 22d fit into crimped edges 21d, 21a, 21b, 21c respectively, and may then be fixed together (by gluing or otherwise or welding).
A further embodiment of the invention (FIGS. 4, 5, and 6) is formed for example, by milling slots (41a and 41b) along the edge or bias of sheet of material 12 and separating the sheet into side wall members (13a', 13b) with (FIG. 4) marginal bias edges 42a and 42b which are thereafter bent down (dotted lines, FIG. 4) to form angular adges 43a and 43b. In the (previously described) crimped or inwardly offset sides, there are formed, as by extruding sheet 12, marginal edges 21a and 21b, slots 44a, 44b are formed (FIG. 5) and notches 45a and 45b are formed to permit stronger joints and better fixing or interfitting thereof, as by placing glue in the notches 45a, 45b, 45c, 45d. Each of said side wall members (13a', 13b, 13c, 13d) has marginal edges (21a, and 42a, 21b and 42b, 21c and 42c, and 21d and 42d), one of said edges being bent (21a, 21b, 21' and 21d) and one of said edges being crimped (42a, 42b, 42c, and 42d). The parts are assembled as shown in FIGS. 5 and 6. Decorative notches 51a, 51b, 51c, 51d (FIG. 6) may be added to balance off the effect of the line 61 where assembly has been effected. Additionally, the parts be interference or 5 frictional pressure fitted into final assembled position as shown in FIG. 6.
The pole base structure of my invention may be formed relatively inexpensively, and will be durable and long lasting in use.
While the foregoing disclosure of exemplary embodiment is made in accordance with the Patent Statutes, it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited thereto or thereby, the inventive scope being defined in the appeneded claims.
The invention claimed is:
1. A method of forming a pole base structure, comprismg:
(a) forming a sheet having a plurality of ends,
(b) making a transverse cut through said sheet to form cut out segments of side panels,
(0) dbending end segments of said sheet to form bent e ges,
(d) crimping portions of said bent edges to form crimped sides,
(e) placing said crimped sides adjacent said cut segments of side panels,
(f) interfitting said crimped sides to said cut segments.
2. In a method of forming a pole base structure, as described in claim 1,
the further step of fixing said crimped sides to said cut segments.
3. In a method of forming a pole base structure, as described in claim 1,
the further step of forming a slot in said sheet after so making a transverse cut therethrough.
4. In a method of forming a pole base structure, as described in claim 3,
the further step of bending said out segments to form bent segments. 5. In a method of forming a pole base as described in claim 4,
the further comprising forming a notch in said crimped sides to form notched segments to receive said cut segments. 6. In a method of forming a pole base as described in cYaim 5,
the further comprising forming fixing notches in an extending section of said crimped sides.
