Description

(No Model.)
N. MURPHY. AIR AND SMOKE SPREADER'AND DISTRIBUTER FOR SMOKE HOUSES.
Patented Jan. 11, 1887.
N4 PETERS. PMm-UlMgmpMr. Washington. D, C.
, UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrea NICHOLAS MURPHY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
AIR AND SMOKE SPREADER AND DISTBIBUTER FOR SMOKE-HOUSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,706, dated January 11, 1887.
Application filed May 14, 1886. Serial No. 202,140.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and dry houses in which meats are dried, or
dried and smoked, by the application of hot air or smoke from a furnace or smoke-generator situated in another room or building from said smoking and drying room'and conveyed to said room by flues.
The object of my invention is to obtain a spreader and distributor by which thewhole or any desired amount of the heat or smoke coming from said furnace or generator may be distributed to and toward any part of the smoke and drying room.
I have illustrated myinvention by the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part hereof, in Which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved air and smoke spreader and distributer. Fig. 2 isa'plan view of my improved air and smoke spreader and distributor from line 2 of Fig. 1, viewed in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a plan view on line 3 of Fig. -1, viewed in the direction of the arrow.
Like letters refer to like parts. throughout.
the several views.
A is the pipe or flue from the furnace or generator to the smoking and drying room.
B is a cone-shaped portion of my invention extending from flueA to and supporting 1101- low cap and spreader B.
B is a hollow or dead-air cap and spreader.
- b is a flange on the inner surface of cone B.
b is a bolt and .nut securing spreader B to cone B.
Gis a metal flange on the outer surface of cone B. Flange O rests on or near to the upper surface of the floor of the smoking and drying room. Ihe diameter of thehole in said floor through which the fine and cone pass into said drying and. smoking chamber is larger than the diameter of said flue and cone, and slide 0 is placed in said flange G for the adjustable admission of air into the smoking .and drying room independent of and without passing through my improved air and smoke spreader and distributer.
D is a wire screen or perforated plate resting on flange b.
E is a casting or spider'secured to the upper end of cone B, with flanges e e thereon.
Screen Dis placed in my air and smoke 6o spreader and distributor when, from the character of the fuel used in producing smoke or heat, unconsumed portions thereof or cinders are liable to be carried into the smoking and drying room along with said smoke or heat.
Dead-air cap and spreader B is hollow, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and the purpose thereof is to prevent, .to a large extent, the distribu- .tion of heat by radiation from the upper surface thereof.
The smoke or heated air entering the smoking and drying chamber through my improved air and smoke spreader and distributor passes between the outer surface of dead-air cap B I and the inner surface of cone B, as illustrated 7 in Fig. 1, and the amount and direction thereof is controlled by dampers F F.-
If it be desired to admit air into the smoking and drying chamber independent of the smoke and air spreader and distributor, the same may be readilydone by damper 0 in flange O. P
I do not, however, consider slide 0 an essential part of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, its 8 5 construction and manner of operation, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In an iii and smoke spreader and distributer for smoke-houses, the combination of a cone having a dead-air chamber and spreader in the upper portion thereof, and dampers adjustably placed around said air-spreader and upon the upper surface of said cone, all substantially as described, and for the purpose 5 set forth.
2. In an air and smoke spreader and distributer for smoke-houses, the combination of dead-air cap or chamber B, and adjustable dampers F F, all substantially as described, 10 and for the purpose set forth.
NICHOLAS MURPHY.
cone B, dead-air chamber-and spreader B, casting E, having flangese e e e,and adjustable dampers F F, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
5 3. In an air and smoke spreader and dis tributer for smoke-houses, the combination of I In presence of cone B,]1aving flange O on the outside thereof F. L. BROWN,
and flange b on the inside thereof, screen D, CHARLES T. BROWN.
