"requirmerit fot handling the rod'du'ring the =lpading operaftions and then placing it in some other positioninvolves a cer tain amount of lost effort and tends to.reduee the'efficiency of anchoring memberinserting'operations. I l Acc rdingly, it is the primary object'ofthepresentinventionto overcome the disadvantages experienced where a separate loading rod is employed and-to afford a device incorporating means for loading the anchoring member and hammer pistoninto the firing'position. f

Therefore. i th P t i lYenl pl a ev is P P l Y mounted onthe casin'g of the device. and is movablebetween a. first position for loading the anchoring members and hammer piston into the firing position and a second position where the lever is moved out of alignment with the-barrel of the device. Further; a gripping sleeve and cap member are connected together and are arranged on the casing to engage the barrel for movement as a unit relative to'the casing. An arm or lever is pivotally fixed to the casing and when the barrel is displaced axially in the firingdirection the lever enters the barrel and guides the anchoring mechanism and the hammer piston into the firing position. Y
Q firing position. In its first position the lever is aligned with the slot and'with the borethrough the barrel ofthe device. When it is moved into its second position," the lever is displaced out of alignment with the bore and the slot so that it does not interfere with the firing of the anchoring members. I The various features of noveltywhich. characterize the invention are pointed out with particularity in the' claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification. For a better which projects through an opening in the cap 3,'anL -shaped I I lever or arm 4 is pivotally attached to it and the lever is movable between a first position. as shown in ElG. Land at second position. asshown in FIG. 2. Th'ejlo'nge'r leg of the L-shaped stantially pcrpendicularly'tothe longer leg at itsend remote from its print of attachment to thecasing'kTh'e pivotaxis of'the v armA extends throughthe wall ofthecasing perpendicularly I to the axis of the casing. Secured to the face' of the cap 3 by means of a screw I1 is 'a'cam:memb,er 5. g
Disposed within the casing is a barrel 6 having a bore'fia which extends betweena nozzle end=6b anda cartridge bearing end'6c. The-barrel 6 is 'slidablyfpositionable in the axial direction through the casing l. The inner surface ofthe casing l, and the outer surface of the barrel 6 are shaped to provide an annular open space lb closed fat' theopposite ends thereof by annularly extending shoulde r la-on the casing and an v annularly extending shouldered on thebarreLThe length ofthe space lbdetermin'esthe extent o'fimovement of the barrel ing a'stop for'the shoulder6d onthe barrel. 7
A'hammer'piston 7 is located in the barrel. and as shown in FIG. lit is located in the firing position atthe cartridge end of in the axial direction with the shoulder la on the casing formthe barrel. For firing anchoring m'embersfrom the bore of the barreLthe hammer piston is'freely'movable" through the barrel. A tits forward end B, facing in the dir'ectionof the nozzle end 6b of thebarrel, thejhammer piston isarran'ged to receive an anchoring member. such as'the bolt 12 shown in FIG. I, the head of which seats within the end [30f the hammer piston. In addition to the support provided by the hammer piston 7, the bolt is also supported by a washer 14 disposed concentrically about the shank of the bolt 12 and extending radially outwardly into contact with the surface of the bore.
As viewed in'FlG. l; the upper'portion of the barrel6 contains a Jshaped groove while the lower part of the barrel contains an axially extending slot 16 which is open at the nozzle end of the barrel and extends rearwardly through the wall of the barrel toward its cartridge end. The .I-shaped groove 15 is formed of two parallel and spaced-groove components 150,
I 15b joined by a transverse groove component 15c spaced inwardly from the nozzle end of the barrel. The groove component 15a is open at the nozzle end of the-barrel while the groove component 15b is closed and terminates inwardly from the nozzle end of the barrel. 1
In operating the device. the hammer piston 7 is'located at I the nozzle end of the barrel and a bolt'lZ is inserted into the understanding of the invention, its operating-advantages and bore with its head fitted within the end 13 of the piston 7. Initi'ally, the bolt is inserted a sufficient distance into the barrel so that the washer l4 rests against the surface of the bore 6a,
Next, the gripping sleeve 2 and the cap} are rotated in the direction of the arrow III shown in FIG. 2 so that the cam 5 is moved out ofthe groove component through the groove component 150 into the groove component 1511. In this position. the gripping sleeve can be moved forwardly and the cam 5 engages the barrel 6 within the groove component [5b for moving the barrel forwardly in the firing direction relative to the casing lv When the bolt is inserted into the barrel. the lever 4 is in its second position as indicated in FIG. 2, that is extending transversely to the axis of the bore and disposed out of alignment with the bore and the barrel. In the second position the lever or arm 4 extends laterally outwardly from the casing across the forward face of the cap 3. that is, the face oriented toward the nozzle end 612 of the barrel. As the gripping sleeve and cap member are moved forwardly. along the casing, the forward face of the cap 3 pivots the lever 4 about its axis in the casing from the second position, see FIG. 2. into the first position, see FIG. 1. where the upstanding leg of the L-shaped lever is aligned with the bore 6a and the slot 16 through the barrel. As the interengaged gripping sleeve, cap member and the barrel continue to be moved forwardly, the upstanding shorter leg of the lever 4 enters the slot and the bore in the barrel and engages the face of the washer l4 and moves the bolt 12 and the hammer piston 7 to the opposite end of the barrel since the lever 4 is secured to the casing which is in a stationary position relative to the movement of the gripping sleeve and barrel.
After the bolt 12 and the hammer piston 7 are disposed in the firing position, the sleeve 2 and cap 3 along with the barrel 6 are returned in the direction of the cartridge end of the barrel on the casing, again assuming the position shown in HO. 1. After the rearward motion is completed, by effecting a rota tional movement between the sleeve and the casing in the opposite direction to the arrow ill of FIG. 2, the cam 5 is moved from the groove component 15b through the groove component 150 back into the groove component 15a and the device is loaded and ready to drive the bolt into a receiving material.
Further, with the cap and sleeve returned to the position shown in FIG. 1, the lever 4 is returned to the position in HQ 2 where it is held in position across the forward face of the cap so that it does not interfere with the firing of the device.
