Description

UNITED STATES t PATENT v EEICE.
n JAMEsTHIERRY, or AURORA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES-FOR TURNING o'I-F` GRINDSTONES;
specinanon forming part of Leners Parma No. 35,553, daad June 10,1862. Y
' .To aZZ whom, t rmty concern.- l
Be it known thatl, JAMES THIERRY, of Au.- rora, in the `county of Kane,in the State of Illinois,.have invented a new and useful Machine for Turning Off Circular Grindstones;` "and I do herebydeelare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference .being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let-ters` of reference marked thereon.
The nature of myinvention consists in combining a circular cutting-tool with a spindle fitting loosely into a couple of boxes attached to a frame so' constructed that` it may be properly xed tothat of a grndstone by means of `wedges 'or screws so disposedas to allow said a spindle to `form a greater or lesser angle with a plane passi ngthrough two points of the axis Y of said grindstbnejand throughone point of I the axis offsaid cutting-tool, the machine resultl ing from this combination operating through the contact of said` cuttingtool with the surface to be turneddoff atthe circumference of a revolving grlndstone, and on account of the inclination `of said `spindle with the axleof said grindstone. I j Y To enable others skilled inthe art to make and use myinventiou, I will proceed to describe its construction" and operation. I take ay circulardisk, C, of hardened steel j land sharpened at its circumference,and fIx the j same toa spindle,D,` passingjthrough its"cen` ter lby means otanut or its equivalent, the said spindle tting loosely into a couple of boxes,y E `E', cast infone jet with a frame, F,
` constructed as described above.
. Operation: Saidmachinebeingfirmly iixed to the'frame G ofa grindstone, H, to be turned off, before operating it is -necessarythat said machine be adjusted iu such a manner as to la makefsaid cuttingtool turn offa chipvof the being adj usted, as described, for proper operation, and the grindstone made to revolve as usual, it Will suffice to push said `cutting-tool against the side of said. grindstone, either from f right to lelt'or left to right, according to the direction in which the same will be revolving, When said cutting tool will be immediately engaged by said .grindstone and forced to revolve by its contact with the revolving surface of thesame grindstone, Ycutting a spiral groove Y (likethe thread of a screw) around the same, (on-account of said inclination of said spindle,) that will make saidcircular cutting-tool ad- Vance, and thus operate the turning off of a grindstone. j
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a circular^cutting^tool, l
C, a spindle, D, and a frame, F, together with the Wedges K K K K, or their equivalents, j
with a grindstoneturning machine, so constructed that it will operate by the joint eects of its contact with a grindstone in motion and the inclination of said spindle in relation to said grindstoue, substantially as described above.
